Justin Smoak and More...
Hey guys, I'm in the middle of a draft review for the Hardball Times and I am looking for input.
Justin Smoak was not apart of the first installment, but this was because I had already created a scouting report on him before the draft using the usual video analysis, which readers can get here:
Congrats on getting this guy because as an Oriole fan, he was the guy I wanted all along. And to get him at 11 is a real coup. I found this interesting tidbit over at McCovey Chronicals via Baseball Prospectus:
College first basemen are the most valuable group of draft picks by an enormous margin. College first basemen selected in the first round have gone on to have Hall of Fame-caliber careers approximately one-third of the time.
Now, for this draft, you'll see me report on Harold Martinez and I'll probably do Robert Ross.
But now I need your input on other prospects (draft related) you would like to see broken down. I can't promise to do everyone, but I promise to come back and break down 3 or 4 of the guys you choose specifically for Lone Star.
So let me know.

RHP Jack Armstrong...
Doubtful we will sign him, much like Martinez, but i am curious about his projectability, if not for Texas for Vandy.

Michael Bianucci
William Thompson (I don’t think he’s good but others seem to)
BTW, great work with the Smoak stuff, as always.

Damn
Smoak has a beautiful swing from the left side of the plate.

i don't care how we do it
but i really want to see Chris Davis and Justin Smoak in the same lineup for the Texas Rangers. That could be an incredible display of power.

me too
Because that will mean Davis stuck in the bigs and Smoak advanced quickly.

we really need to pony up and sign these guys
eccspecially the later round high school guys…..learn from Davis, Smoak, Zito, etc…..if they’re at odds on the contract and can’t be a huge defecit for the later round guys, 50 k? seriously…..commit to rebuilding….put your money where your mouth is…

Not so much...
$600K to Patrick Boyd
$550K to Kiki Bengochea
$2.07M to Vince Sinisi
Sometimes you have to let those guys go…

all 3 of those guys
were worth it vs. signing another ben brusard or richard hidalgo etc. and dont say that MB was one of those kinda guys b/c MB was never in that category stats wise as those 2.
development involves investment and risk. those signing bonus totals are pittance for an MLB team.

If that was the case...
then teams wouldn’t let players go over $50K all the time.

thats b/c they are a bunch of idiots who are more interested in a bottom line than winning or building a system

I took a look at some videos on the guys mentioned...
T. Murphy – I found some interesting quirks in his mechanics and feel he would be an interesting guy to look at, so he is on my list
Armstrong – if this guy wants a large signing bonus, which I think he will, I would pass and save the money for something else
Some interesting guys (with good and bad qualities) – Thompson, Bianucci, and Castner (Castner is the guy with the most potential of the players mentioned)
I’m not sure I can really do a good breakdown on C. Murphy…his video is kinda funny in a cruel way. He takes about 8 game swings, swings and misses about 6 times, barely makes contact with another one and pops up his last pitch. On two of the swings, he looked like he injured himself, especially the last one. I’m thinking he was caught on a bad day to be filmed.

Tim Murphy, Bianucci, and Castner
sound good, but I think I’d rather see something on Richard Bleier or Joseph Wieland than Thompson. I’d really be interested in Mike Bianucci, as I’d had my eye on him prior to the draft. It seems like with some good hitting instruction he could really emerge as a big-time bat, as he already has the tools, especially the power.

re:
yeah, I’m not sure who I’m going to do between Wieland and Thompson…I’ll probably go back and count the requests. The problem on Bleier is I can’t find video of him, so I won’t be able to evaluate him.
