Won't get to see the game

Fiancee wants to go see Get Smart… the movie and game have the same starting time. (Compromise I make because of the rarity of us having time off at the same time when things are actually open.) I’ll be tracking it on my phone, looks like… so here’s the new rally image I promised last game but couldn’t use.

From what I can tell...

The high camera angle is due to a “sunken field,” which alows more seating on the lowest level of the stadium. That pushed the high level seating (and booths) farther away from home plate than most stadiums. That, in turn, pushes the camera angle up.

I guess.

Yeah

Lets hope so. Because if Laird’s trade value just went skydiving. If Salty doesn’t perform while he’s gone, he’ll likely never get out of this damn platoon.

I don't know why people are dissing the melhuse idea

maybe you shouldn’t sign melhuse but someone like him wouldn’t be bad. the fragily psyched salty (as some have suggested) might feel a bit threatened if you brought up another catcher of the future

did you happen to watch melhuse while he was here?

couldnt throw, couldnt hit, couldnt run… he was terrible.

id take any young-ish defensive catcher over him.

youngis defensive catcher

ok, i’ll visit the youngish defensive catcher tree next time i’m over there. but, for now, i don’t think it matters that your defensive backup catcher sucks if you play salty all the time

Rare Gnats Sex

by ab03 on Jun 20, 2008 7:56 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what exactly is your point?

melhuse sucked. therefore people don’t like the idea of bringing him back.

you don't need a good catcher to be backup

in fact, you might actually benefit from getting a guy who’s not that great so you only play salty the whole time and he’s not looking over his shoulder during this time

well it's not like they're going to play Teagarden as much as Salty if they bring him up

eccspecially with the year he’s having…...good for him, but you know….

by slash on Jun 20, 2008 8:00 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think you're wrong about that

if they start his clock now they’re going to want to see him. and if he shows any sort of defensive prowess, he’s going to end up splitting time with salty.

Teagarden

crushes lefties, salty crushes righties. At least you have a good platoon if he’s the choice

by FirebatM3 on Jun 20, 2008 8:02 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

exactly

is that what you want? I thought all the Salty people wanted Salty all the time. Yet, the salty people are quick to dismiss the idea of the scrub defensive old backup.

well if Washington played Melhuse that MUCH

he’s going to play the backup catcher no matter what….might as well have someone who can make contact and know how to handle themselves defensively

by slash on Jun 20, 2008 8:04 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Salty people?

I’ll have you know I believe Teagarden is the catcher of the future in the organization. If they play it as a real platoon, I’d be more than happy with that setup

what was it that Walbeck said about his catchers?

what did washington want from his catchers? They care about defense. If you give them an alternative, they’re going to take it more than you want.

Well Max Ram stayed in for his second AB

so he isn’t on his way to Washington just yet.

Teagarden wasn’t in the lineup tonight for OKC

by SaltyDawg on Jun 20, 2008 8:00 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So, what's the plan from here?

Let’s work under the assumption that Laird is out until, say, August 1, and that might be conservative.

Do you call up Teagarden? MaxRam? What do you do with Salty? Do you try to deal Laird in the offseason now?

Also, what about signing a Damian Miller? He’s available, and would probably come cheap.

I think you go with Teagarden

MaxRam needs full-time AB’s somewhere, and with Blalock, Bradley and eventually Chris Davis crowding the 1B/DH situation, I don’t think there’s room for him. Either we bring up Teagarden, or we promote a AAA scrub or sign somebody expendable.

So...

fwiw, I think the Laird situation is addressed, in order of likelihood:

1) Veteran backup picked up off the street (someone like Adam Melhuse)
2) Teagarden
3) Max Ramirez

i just find it ridiculous to be questioned for having an adverse reaction to someone who was terrible in every facet of the game for the rangers coming back and thinking there must surely be a better option.

a veteran pitcher helping out a young pitcher? ill buy that. a catcher? just work with walbeck and the other coaches.

Melhuse

He knows what Washington wants from his catcher, and was brought in last year, in part, to help mentor Laird. Seems like he’d be useful with Salty.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2008 8:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Kevin Richardson

worked with Salty in AAA. I see very little difference save money and convenience.

by FirebatM3 on Jun 20, 2008 8:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

What convenience?

And, for that matter, what money?

Richardson would make $300K. A veteran scrub would make $500K. Pro-rated over 6 weeks or so, that is a difference of $50K.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2008 8:15 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Convenience

as in he’s already in the organization, he isn’t coming off of injury and there is a slight chance that he becomes something like a backup catcher in the future.

by FirebatM3 on Jun 20, 2008 8:20 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He has about as much a chance...

...of being a backup catcher in the future as Nate Gold has of being a bench bat in the future.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2008 8:21 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

both of which

has more of a chance of happening than melhuse being anything save melhuse.

by FirebatM3 on Jun 20, 2008 8:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also...

If you call him up, you then have to go find a backup catcher for Oklahoma. So you are still going to end up going out on the street and finding a veteran catcher.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2008 8:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i wish we were in an AL park this weekend
