Max Ramirez Called Up
And it so begins:
The Rangers placed catcher Gerald Laird on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled left hamstring after Friday's 4-3 loss to the Nationals and will recall Max Ramirez from Double A Frisco.
The injury was described as minor during the game, but manager Ron Washington said otherwise after the 14-inning loss at Nationals Park.
"He pulled it," Washington said. "It's bad. It's not a day-to-day thing."
Laird was injured in the fourth inning while legging out a bunt single. He said he felt the hamstring tighten two strides before the bag, then pull on his last step.
"I said to myself, 'This is not happening right now,' " Laird said. "It's disappointing. It's tough to swallow. I felt like I was playing pretty well."

I actually feel bad...
for Laird. Sure he’s a cocky SOB and I didn’t think much of him after last year, but as he said, he was playing pretty well.
I’m excited to see MaxRam, but how much will he play? Once a week at catcher? Will he see time at 1B or DH? How does TT feel about getting passed on the chart? Did the Rangers go with Max only because TT is a little dinged up right now? This is very interesting.

Well
Teagarden is currently injured and not on the 40 man roster. He has been struggling but he is still putting up a .820 OPS in AAA. He might be slumping but he is far from sucking.

he's hitting like .239 after hitting like .157 in AA earlier
if he’s hurt fine, but his numbers arent good and havent been all season. the original question was, “how does TT feel about getting leapfrogged”
my response is how about hitting .250 in AAA and being able to play everyday for half a season and we can talk, til then….
he can shut up.

I don’t get this. I am not aware of him calling himself that. If he called himself that, then he’d have given himself that name as a nickname. He uses it as an adjective, not as a noun.

You said:
He picked the number 15 because he says he is one man with five tools
So he said “I’m one man with 5 tools”, right? And you think that’s different than “I’m One Man 5 Tools”?
Logically speaking, you may have a point, but if you look at the actual words he used, there’s almost no daylight between those two. I get that you’d rather think of it as an innocuous thing, because it does make him sound like a bit of a boob, but a preposition shouldn’t make all the difference in the world.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 22, 2008 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OK.
How would you feel if he printed the word ‘Awesome’ on his jersey?
The fact is that Laird was explaining the rationale behind his choice of number, which presupposes that at one time prior to the decision, he said to himself, “Yeah, I’m 1 man with 5 tools”. You keep eliminating the “1 man” part, and try to make it seem as if he were saying “I have 5 tools”. Not the case.
Of course he’s one man. How many more would he be? He chose to say ‘one man’ because he was making a slogan for himself, one which he later spilled the beans on to the public. Under your theory, he’d have been just fine choosing 5.
Even if 5 had been taken (which I’m not sure it was at the time), and he added 1 and the rationale behind it later, the point remains that he was obviously crafting what amounts to a “nickname”, if only to himself.

From Mr. Lucas
Per multiple reports, Texas will place catcher Gerald Laird on the disabled list with a pulled hamstring and recall C/1B Max Ramirez from AA Frisco. Ramirez was batting .363/.457/.662 with 17 homers in 67 games. He hit a three-run homer and struck out before being pulled from Friday night’s game.Ramirez was already on the 40-man roster.

So with MaxRam up...
and Davis and Blalock on their way the lineup could be…
2B Kinsler
SS Young
CF Hamilton
RF Bradley
1B Davis
DH MaxRam
3B Blalock
CA Salty
LF Murphy
Of course that means Blalock goes back to 3B and assumes Board Game is healthy enough to play the field. It also puts our backup CA at DH which I don’t think Wash will do often. Not a very likely lineup, but damn that looks good!

i think that they should probably dump the 2 starts, 2 sits thing and maybe let salts catch 3 games then sit 1? but not not necessarily strictly like they’ve been doing?
what i mean is don’t stick to the rhythm of start-start-sit-start-start-sit.

Max
Had better not do much catching.
It would be totally moronic for the Rangers to platoon two sub-par defensive catchers, especially when one needs to prove what he can do with everyday playing time, and the other isn’t projected to defensively be capable of catching full-time in the Majors.
Max needs to come up and start playing first base full time until Blalock comes back, and then he needs to DH as much as possible and platoon with Hank at first base. The only problem with this is it means Chris Davis can’t be brought up until the deadline when Blalock or Bradley is traded, but that’s the way it’s gonna have to be.

Bradley Trade
Coincidence or not, the offense has looked very average without Bradley in the clean-up spot. It really looks bad when the three-hole hitter, MY, is about 2 for 30.
IMO, management will see this as a reason to not only keep Bradley this season, but work on re-signing him for a few more years.

Melhuise
I wonder if the only reason Max is being called up is because we don’t have a veteran in the organization right now. I would like him to stay in the minors and get consisant ABs rather than come up and play sparingly. As good as Boggs and Duran have been this year imagine had they been down in AAA getting consistant ABs? And Max’s ceiling is much higher than those two. Hopefully he gets called up and plays a couple games to get a taste of the majors and then goes back down and works to get back. I think we will sign a Melhuise type guy in the coming week or so.

Backup catcher
I believe Max will be used as a typical backup catcher (no 1B, no DH). So I would agree that he’ll play sparingly. But as for how that would effect his development—if we’re talking a three-week stay in the majors while Laird recovers, then I don’t think there’s a negative impact on his development and even think that it may further his development.
Which is better for his development: 25 abs and three weeks spending time with the big club or continuing to shell AA pitching over the same period of time? I think the experience he gets over three weeks with the big club helps to mitigate the lack of everyday ABs.

Hamilton struggled last night
but he is still hitting .381/.458/.714 over his last 21 at bats.

Excuse my ignorance

He looks cocky
in person, too, in the sense that he carries himself well. When I finally got to see him in Frisco recently that really struck me, how he just oozed confidence.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.

Just like Beavan
if he’s gonna back it up, who cares.
His pic definitely screams “pfft, I have to take a fucking picture for this?”, though.
