Around SBN: The Worst Season of Francisco Rodriguez's Career Bar-right-arrows

Minors 6/21

Big arms on the bump

Fredo Boscan for Spokane

Kennil Gomez goes for Clinton

Omar Poveda for Bakersfield

Tommy Hunter for Frisco

Dreamboat Harrison for Oklahoma City

Should be a good night on the farm:

My impoverished muse, alas! What have you for me this morning?
Your empty eyes are stocked with nocturnal visions,
In your cheek's cold and taciturn reflection,
I see insanity and horror forming.
The green succubus and the red urchin,
Have they poured you fear and love from their urns?
The nightmare of a mutinous fist that despotically turns,
Does it drown you at the bottom of a loch beyond searching?

Wouldn't say that.

Gomez pitched well and Harrison/Hunter have both been great.

I think he might force his way into

The rotation next spring. Might even get a Sept. call up this year.

Arizona Rookie League

Roster’s up. No Font listed. sigh
starts tomorrow morning

by shroomer on Jun 21, 2008 10:05 PM CDT   0 recs

Font

doesn’t he have some shoulder soreness or something? Probably be a little while yet. I’d rather they take their time with that.

My secret source is Miles

Wilmer Font is really Juan Dominguez. Mr. Santos refused to comment.

by jparks77 on Jun 22, 2008 12:36 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Okay

They have Kevin Torres listed as a left-handed throwing catcher. That has to be an error doesn’t it?

Joseph Ortiz

I remember him doing really well in the DSL last year. High K rate, and only 16 last year. Now he is the youngest pitcher on the team (7 months younger than Joe Wieland), but I would imagine he’ll be more of a reliever. Especially given his height (5’7’‘) he may be restricted to relief a la DRH.

Still, an interesting guy that I’ll be keeping an eye on.

by naropean on Jun 21, 2008 11:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Poveda is getting back on track

Struck out 5 of 6 in the second and third inning, the only other out being a foul pop.

by Telegraph on Jun 21, 2008 10:23 PM CDT   0 recs

damn

anybody know what happened to Poveda?

Beau Jones

For what it’s worth, he’s pitching really well in relief since coming back this month:

11.2 IP, 7 H, 2 BB, 11 K, 0.77 ERA / 0.77 WHIP

by zywica on Jun 22, 2008 1:04 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

"No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of."

by Walter Sobchak on Jun 22, 2008 2:33 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well he rolled through 3

Then got into trouble in the 4th with some soft hit singles, unturned double plays, an error, and some good hit and run tactics by Modesto. I think he got frustrated and started trying to throw his fastball really hard (no gun so don’t know velocity). The 5th inning was similar, soft hits, bunt that Poveda couldn’t handle. There is some bad luck involve to be sure.

Regardless, I don’t think it’s a bad outing. 5 IP with no walks and 7Ks is nothing to be sniffed at. Of the 8 hits, 7 were singles, and from what I can gather from the radio, maybe 2 of those 7 singles were hit well. He throws a lot of strikes, so it’s somewhat inevitable that some of them gets put in play. I need to remind here that this guy is a strikeout pitcher with low walk totals, and he doesn’t get his strikeouts through trick pitches ala DRH. I’m pretty high on the guy. I don’t think he has a complete understanding of how to use his pitches effectively yet, but that’s why he is in A ball learning, and he has time.

by Telegraph on Jun 22, 2008 3:21 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Harrison

very nice game for him, as well as another guy in whom I don’t have a lot of faith, Mendoza. Good stuff.

by zywica on Jun 21, 2008 10:37 PM CDT   0 recs

And Tommy Hunter

And Omar Poveda is doing well so far…

It is an “up yours, z” day for the pitching prospects…

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 21, 2008 10:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hey hey

I’m not critical on Poveda at least. And I like Hunter, just as a back roto/7th inning type.

But Harrison pitching like that in AAA has to get you attention if he could sustain it.

by zywica on Jun 21, 2008 10:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Speaking of your guys...

Fabio Castillo needs to stop sucking.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 21, 2008 11:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Tell me about it

At this point he’s looking like an all talent, not results type, very disappointing after his promising start that mirrored what Feliz was doing.

by zywica on Jun 21, 2008 11:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Watch it

We might have to start shooting the messenger if this trend continues. :)

by zywica on Jun 22, 2008 12:35 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

At least it seems that way

His velocity is down. His command is off. He is obviously laboring. His control issues suggest that he isn’t repeating his arm angle and that could either be a sign of an existing injury or it could definitely lead to one.

Maybe he is just working on something specific but it certainly seems like something is off.

before this goes any further

i want to say those are terrible nicknames. I had to go look up who had been pitching to figure them out (and they all pitched last week!). a good nickname doesn’t do that

Rare Gnats Sex

by ab03 on Jun 22, 2008 3:22 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, I'm not proud of Olive, Fredo, but I like McFly, since I grew up in the 80s.

Martin… Marty… Marty McFly . Perez is about as opposite to Marty McFly as is possible, which is why I like it.

by t ball on Jun 22, 2008 1:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

My head spins when I think about these precocious pitchers, but

it’s almost just as amazing that if Beavan and Main were starting off in Spokane this year they would be at 19.5-yo among the youngest in this league as well, at least among the top 20 youngest. The depth of quality youngsters amazes me every which way I look at it.

well his line so far is pretty awesome

I guess its harder for a relief pitcher to get noticed in that league though unless you put up numbers like that the whole time

So many young arms, but I'm greedy, and I wish the Rangers would've sealed the deal with

Drew Pomeranz.

Ole Miss, Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. He finished the season strong with 21 IP and only 2 runs allowed against #6 Vandy, LSU, and #10 South Carolina. Final season stats: 71.1 IP, 81 K, 30 BB, 4.12 ERA. He reportedly deals low 90s heat and has hit 95 when amped. He takes the mound with uncommon poise for a freshman.

Pomeranz profile

by rooster on Jun 22, 2008 12:09 AM CDT   0 recs

John Gast

is the one that bothers me the most.

by jparks77 on Jun 22, 2008 12:15 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah. He pitched late for FSU, with reportedly exceptional poise for freshman.

His stats showed the usual lack of control after TJ, but for FSU to get him on the mound so quickly certainly shows how highly they think of him.

by rooster on Jun 22, 2008 12:25 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

+1

Any idea how much far apart he and the Rangers were on bonus demands at the end?

I never heard a solid number on that one.

If it was anything less than 100k, I’m gonna be pissed.

The 40 Trumps All!!!

by thedirkatron on Jun 22, 2008 12:36 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Gast

I believe he wanted 1st round money. Risky deal for the Rangers considering he was coming off TJ and we had five first round/supplemental picks in ‘07 to pay for.

by jparks77 on Jun 22, 2008 12:47 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Pomeranz

I know you’re talking about Gast, but I think they got close with Pomeranz. Don’t know a number. Seems like they were at least talking to Gast on that last night as well.
