Spokane Kids: Mike Hindman Report
Really great report up from Mike Hindman that takes a deeper look at the precocious kiddie corp pitching for Spokane:
"The Northwest League is largely populated by recent college draftees and second year high school draftees -- most players are between 20 and 22 years old.
The pitchers Spokane is running out there include 17 year old lefty Martin Perez, 18 year old righty Carlos Pimentel (pictured, courtesy of Scott Lucas), and 18 year old righty Wilfredo Boscan. They're good. Really good. And it hasn't taken them long to start to prove it."

I found the fact that MJH still mentions Font as one of the cornerstone teenage arms kinda heartening considering that he probably knows the scuttlebutt surrounding Wilmer’s absence this summer. FWIW, I sent Evan Grant an email about Font and he said he’d look into it. So, keep your eyes peeled for Grant commenting on him soon.
What...
is the scuttlebutt?
I'd love for part of the "new look" to be a return to the red uniforms of the 1990s. - Ian Kinsler
Really?
Why reveal that you’ve heard rumors, in the first place …

Probably because
the rest of us sound ridiculous when we’re talking about whether Font will be the next guy to pitch, etc., considering what they know. I’d prefer to know that something has things on the freeze for him over being completely ignorant.

Right
but I’d prefer to be completely ignorant than to know that nonameoncard and jparks have “heard rumors,” only to “refuse to reveal” those rumors.
No offense to nonameoncard and jparks.

The difference is
I don’t think that these two are full of shit.

You are right
It would frustrate me as well. I apologize for sparking this confusion. It really wasn’t my intention to play the ‘I know something you don’t know’ card.
Hopefully Font returns to the hill soon and continues what he started last season.
I second that.
I really don’t think the x-factor here is a big deal. I’m not worried about it being a long term concern.

Let's just call Perez
Doogie Howser. Every time I think about it I’m amazed he’s where he is and doing what he’s done at that age. What an embarrassment of riches in Spokane and Clinton right now. Does any other organization touch the Rangers in pitching depth at those two levels?
I need to win the lottery so I can retire and just go to baseball games in minor league towns whenever I want.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
Its absolutely crazy
how much talent is there right now. How about this little fun tidbit. Blake Beaven, the 2006 1st round pick of the Rangers (their highest pick in the draft) is having a great first season in pro ball. 3.31 ERA in 10 starts, 51.2 IP, non-existant BB rate, 1.10 WHIp. That is the 4th best starter on the Clinton staff right now with the 21 year old Derek Holland being the only one older than him.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

The only one that comes to mind
is the Yankees. They have seemingly decided that the way to use their position is to develop their pitching and sign/trade for their hitting. About 80% of their developmental resources seem to be focused on arms, and they have interesting guys littering all of their lower level clubs. For what it’s worth, I think I’d still give us the edge in A-ball down and probably overall (at least if I can still count Hurley).
Tampa is still strong at the lower levels, but not like us. No one else comes right to mind.

A's
They are loaded in High A. Who do you see in NWL and AZL, aside from draftees, that stand out? I’m not all that familiar with some of their 20-something Latinos on that Vancouver staff ( I know Morla and Deaza but that’s about it ).

Speaking specifically about Morla and Deeza
but Jose Oliveros and Joselito Adames are both arms to watch.
Yah
Saw where Cahill just turned in a beautiful AA debut, too…

For what it's worth
There are probably as many 23 year olds in lineups as 20 year olds in that league.
And I assume that
the pitt of dispair that is the game thread has mentioned the Feliz performance, wow.

He just might knock Beasticon out of the top spot on the prospect sheet.
So far this start + last start: 10.1 IP, 20K, 3H, 5BB, 1R, 1ER
For those who weren’t drooling before, if they aren’t now they just aren’t Ranger fans.
Any balks this time out?
"Would you mind walking a time or two so I could drive in some runs"? Milton Bradley
lol
It takes true talent to accomplish what he did last game. Great line from what feels like the forgotten 2007 first rounder.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Tim Hulett interview
He said Ramirez came out of extended with a balk move in his delivery. They didn’t know it because it was never called by the umps in extended games. They fixed it and now he’s good. Hulett said they woulda fixed it in extended if the umps there had noticed it.
I'm betting it was either...
a shoulder or hand bob or a front leg twitch to lead the move. Lower level umpires have trouble picking up the front leg balk pickoff move, and all levels of amateur league umps NEVER call it.
