Why you should root for the A's
I know we all hate our division rivals, but I think we should all be rooting softly for the A's (and to a lesser degree, the Angels) on any night they're not playing the Rangers.

Most people (including me) expected the A's to be in rebuilding mode this year with little or no hope on contending. Furthermore, they have some very attractive players they were expected to deal this summer to get another great haul of young players to build with, in addition to the hauls they got this winter in the Haren and Swisher deals.
But here they are just a few games out of the wild card, and 4.5 out of first place. And we should root for them to win. Why? I don't want to see what the A's can get for Harden if he stays healthy, and I don't want some desparate contender to offer up a cornucopia for Blanton. I don't want the A's to be able to further reload their healthy minor league system with the kind of prospects Beane is so adept at getting.
I want the A's to be buyers. I want them to be so close to first place that they must buy, even if it only means they buy small without dealing away much in the way of prospects. Anything that keeps them from acquiring a lot more young talent is a good thing for 2009 and beyond, when the Rangers will be in a much better position to contend.
Of course, Beane might somehow swing a deal for a young stud that can help them greatly now and in 2009. Dammit, forget I said anything.

I'll not root for a team...
...whose GM has obviously made a deal with the devil.

I just can't...
root for the A’s. Everything you say makes sense, but I just can’t bring myself to cheer for them unless they are playing the Halos or Yanks.
Plus I’m not sure that they would be buyers right now even if they were close to the Halos. I think Beane would still look to make some moves to get younger and rebuild. They buy on guys like Frank Thomas that won’t cost the anything in terms of players. It would be nice to see one of their trades end up a disaster once in a while though. It seems they always get better players than what they give up.

I usually root for the A's.....
When they aren’t playing the Rangers. I have always thought it was weird how the same people can hate the Yankees because of how they are killing baseball by having a $200+million payroll and then hate the A’s for…...well, I don’t know why folks hate the A’s.
With the exception of the King of all Douches, Nick Swisher who have they had on that team that is so hateable?
They are a small market team that plays in a shitty ballpark in front of nobody that somehow put sa competitive squad on the field every year by using their farm system. What’s to hate about that?

Why people hate Oakland?
Their fans are annoying, their players are usually D-Bags… (Swisher, Byrnes in the past)
And its Oakland…....

On a tangent
I like for the AL West teams to beat each other up, and even more, to beat Central and East division teams (both leagues). It isn’t so much being a fan of anyone other than the Rangers, it’s more sharing any credibility and respect for the not-Eastern-media entities. Not that it matters, nor should it, to anyone else. I just have a penchant for the “weak West” beating the others. And it does little harm, IMO, since the Rangers typically fare well within the division lately. Disclaimer: anyone who beats the Angels, even the House of David or the Bridgeport Pony League AllStars, gets cheers from me. But the Angels have shed some of their irritating factors, like Eckstein and Erstad, and GA and Vlad are nearing AARP membership, so even that is weakening some.

al-west
I’ve always kind of pulled for the other al-west teams (when they arent playing the rangers) with the notable exception of the angels. even when i was a kid and loved nearly every team on the planet i was just always apathetic towards the angels.
I still pull for the a’s and mariners at times, mostly the A’s as i just like the way they run their team but make no mistake, rangers are #1 for me.
