Warner Madrigal = Rangers' Closer next year?
I was listening to Norm (yes I know some of you hate Norm..who cares) on Friday and he suggested that the Rangers trade Guardado now and next season CJ Wilson takes over Guardado's role and Warner Madrigal becomes the team's closer. I certainly advocate the idea of trading Guardado but wonder what ya'll think about Madrigal and Wilson's futures. Madrigal is 24 and is currently struggling with a 4.67 ERA in AAA. Good strikeout numbers throughout his minor league career, walks are a little too high though. Besides looking at his stats I don't know much else about him. Is it possible that if Wilson doesn't have the job as closer next year, Madrigal will be our closer? Is Madrigal being groomed to be the closer of the future?
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

he probably is being groomed,
but I think it is silly to have a rookie come in and close next year. Wilson should stick there until he is dethroned by a proven pitcher. Who knows, Warner might come in next year and light it up forcing CJ out of the closer role. But until that happens, CJ sticks there.

NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.
It’s not even worth discussing now.
CJ is a reliever. He, and he himself, will determine at what level he relieves at in the future.

Nope...
he needs to show he can be a successful reliever in the majors before being given the closers role. If he can pitch well out of the ‘pen for 1-2 years then we can talk closer.

or
if he comes in as a reliever and pitches well, give him the setup role.
if he continues to pitch well and the closer (probably wilson) doesn’t pitch well, promote him to closer and see what he can do.

Not sure if he is...
But it sure would be nice if he became a solid closer for us the next 5 years to stick it in the face of the Angels. Considering JD actually stole him from their farm system.

I say give him the K-Rod treatment
In 2002, K-Rod came up and was dominant but they kept Percival in the closer’s role.

I think...
he better start dominating AAA before that’s a option as well.

Yeah, that's the best option
K-Rod, Zumaya (before he got hurt; he was being groomed), even Rivera all had to pay their dues in the 8th inning, which many people consider to be just as pressure-packed a role as the ninth inning. Madrigal has to earn it.

They have an article projecting the closers for the next three years for each team. Here is the Rangers portion:
Texas – The Rangers’ closing situation is as up in the air as any in baseball. C.J. Wilson was handed the job this year despite his control issues, but has twice been on the cusp of being replaced. Joaquin Benoit, who isn’t viewed as having a closer’s mentality, has been battling a troublesome shoulder since spring training. Eddie Guardado and Jamey Wright have actually been the Rangers’ most reliable relievers, and Guardado could get a chance to close later this season. However, neither is a likely option in 2009. The Rangers would love to see Frank Francisco show the same kind of potential he did as a rookie in 2004, but while his stuff has come back after Tommy John surgery, he’s too wild to be trusted at the end of games. He currently has 35 strikeouts, 17 walks and a 4.23 ERA in 27 2/3 innings.
The best hope in the system for a closer of the future is Warner Madrigal, who was stolen away from the Angels in December. The converted outfielder has a 3.27 ERA and a 38/15 K/BB ratio in 33 innings between Double- and Triple-A. Besides him, the Rangers lack pure relief prospects. 2007 draft picks Neil Ramirez and Tommy Hunter are possibilities to shift to the pen, and Hunter might be of use as soon as next year if he’s moved. Former top starting pitching prospect Thomas Diamond remains a candidate to make it as a starter, but he might have a better chance of a career as a setup man at this point.
While Wilson is young and could improve, my guess is that the Rangers’ 2009 closer isn’t currently in the organization. They could come up with the money to make a run at K-Rod or Lidge if they feel they’re close enough to contending. Brandon Lyon would be less expensive, and his sinker would make him a nice fit in Texas. Also, the Rangers could consider bringing back Akinori Otsuka, assuming his rehab from Tommy John surgery goes well.
2009: (Free agent), Wilson, Francisco, Benoit
2010: (Free agent), Wilson, Madrigal, Francisco
2011: Madrigal, Wilson, Diamond, Francisco

I
don’t want to spend money on a closer if we aren’t going to contend. If we aren’t legit contenders (we aren’t right now), no point in bringing in Lidge or K-Rod. As long as we aren’t contending, I do like the idea of signing closers to 1-year deals then trading them at the deadline (see Eric Gagne).

I don't want...
to spend a bunch of money on a closer, just a waste. I still think BGL is the closer next year but if Fx2 could ever harness his 97/98 mph fastball he could be a option. He’s been inconsistant, although that could be said about the entire ‘pen this year.

Don't you think though
That with our payroll going to be so low next year with the team having so many young players on it, we can afford to throw a wad at an established closer like Lidge? Why don’t we just cut out the “hey, let’s try this guy and see how he does” thing and settle the spot once and for all? Isn’t it demoralizing when our starters pitch well only to see it go to waste? If PHI didn’t have Lidge and were still throwing Gordon or Myers out there in the 9th, perhaps they’d only be a slightly-above .500 team. A great closer can make a huge difference.

I'd rather...
we throw that wad of $ at a starter like Sheets or CC, I don’t think the Rangers will end up with either one, but I would much rather do that.
A closer is just one inning a night. Yes it is a big role and can be demorilizing when a game is lost late, but it’s worse when the Rangers are losing 6-2 in the 5th because of the starters. I still think the ‘pen can come around. The starters have been ok but if the Rangers deal Millwood or Padilla before the deadline they will need another established starter to compete next year imo. I still think BGL can be a good closer so I would rather go after a starter or a RH bat if Board Game is dealt..

Forgetting FOTF makes $16M next year?
Not to mention Padilla $12M & Millwood $11M

The overall payroll
is still very manageable even with those contracts, and there’s a good chance one of Milly or Padilla gets moved.

Lidge would end up costing like 50 million
if he continues pitching this dominantly. For that type of money, we could invest a bit more, bring CC in, and have a true ace. I’d rather not go after either though.

Ramirez *JUST* made his professional debut...
And this guy is ready to list him as a potential closer?
The guy has clearly no idea what Hunter or Diamond throws, and he left Feliz and Brian Gordon off the potential setup/closer list. Worthless article in my opinion. He might as well have listed Craig Gentry, you know, if he “shifts” to the mound.

What about Andrew Laughter
He’s having a good amount of success in high A and AA. If he finishes the year as strong as he started it, I don’t see why his name shouldn’t be in the mix for potential future closer as well.
With that said, I think CJ finishes the season and proves to the doubters that he is a good closing option for the next few years and Warner will have to wait it out no matter how well he does.

You guys do know that
With a lead every single pitcher is the “Closer”
A 1 run lead in the 7th is the same as a 1 run lead in the 9th.
Quit using the word closer, its the worst word in baseball. If you have the 3-4-5 hitters coming up in the 8th inning and then 6-7-8 or 7-8-9 hitters in the 9th who do you want your best pitcher pitching too? But of course its the “8th inning” guy that gets the call because thats “his spot”
Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb.
Being a rookie doesnt matter, being a veteren doesnt matter. You either make good pitches and get hitters out, or you don’t.

Warner
How did we get Warner Madrigal? Somehow I missed the actually transaction.
by altercall on Jun 22, 2008 10:54 PM CDT 0 recs
The Angels goofed
At the end of the 2007 season, the Angels made a decision to protect Madrigal from the Rule 5 Draft by putting him on their 40-man roster on November 6th. However, because Madrigal had spent 6 years in the minor leagues with one team, he became a free agent at the close of the 2007 World Series on October 29. The Texas Rangers subsequently signed Madrigal to a contract on November 18, 2007.
