Padilla an all-star?
Wow. We have a 10-game winner before the all-star break. Sportsline.com raised the question of Vicente Padilla as a possible all-star selection. Looking at his stats, I think it'll be tough for him to get a selection. Even though Pads is second in the AL with 10 wins, he has the 15th best ERA with a 3.74, and has barely cracked the top 20 in strikeouts. Those kind of numbers make his selection iffy. Moreover, since the pitchers are selected by the players, I doubt Pads has won over his peers with his prior antics. Nonetheless, it would be nice to see Texas have a pitcher in the all-star game and I hope he can win against Philly on Friday to help his cause.

What does that even mean?
This year there are several pitchers in the AL who are having better years…Right now Padilla isn’t an All-Star.
Roger Pavlik...
was an allstar because of win totals, not his stellar 5 something ERA. I was just joking around.

IIRC, his ERA exploded after the break.
I believe it was 3.20 or so when he was selected… maybe even lower.

11-2, 4.86 ERA
pre ASB in 1996. Not exactly world beating. 4-6, 5.66 post ASB.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
I think it would take...
him getting two more wins in his next 3 or 4 starts before the ASB and lowering his ERA under 3.50 to be considered.
Either way he has pitched great this year after struggling last year. He has been everything I could have hoped for out there so far this year. It is very nice to see a guy pitching like a legitimate #1 starter on our staff.

has a chance
if he can get a string of strong starts leading up to the break
Let's say he goes...
3-1 in his 4 starts before the AS break and lowers his ERA to 3.40.
Then he is 13-4 with a 3.40 ERA by the break. It’s a big IF but IF he did would he make the team then?

Wouldn't the team be decided before his last two starts?
I think he’s only got 1 more start to help his cause… maybe 2

Replacements
You know there are going to be replacements for at least 2 pitchers who “can’t” go.
Yeah
If hammy wasnt getting in, and it seems kinsler and young will get in at least as player/coach selections (one would hope)
then padilla doesnt have much shot.

Nope...
Fringe all-star production and 4 other obvious choices already from the Rangers = No chance.
Just keep pitching well and boost that trade value.
Or
Keep pitching well and boost his value to the Rangers going forward.
Eventually the Rangers need to compete at the major league level and Padilla could be a part of that. We can’t flip every player with value in order to build up the farm. His contract is manageable and his on-the- field production has been stellar. Check out his home/road splits. At this point, I’d rather trade Millwood than Padilla.

As “different” as Padz is, would he get an ego/confidence boost out of being the Rangers defacto Ace? Hard to read the guy, but I honestly could see him stepping up his game even more if Milly were traded.

Padilla is the true #1 on this staff.
I’d still keep both Padilla and Millwood.
Why should the Rangers even think about trading either of their top-2 pitchers.
They’ll make great #3 and #4’s when we start contending.
