Minors 6/23
Midwest League sources indicate this fastball is consistently in the mid-90s, and he's made major strides refining his curveball and changeup.Nice to see confirmation of what we all have heard on what has been going on with Feliz.
Two games already in the books on the farm.
Frisco mashed Corpus Christi 15-7 behind a solid outing from Diamond: Frisco Box The game was not as close as the final score, and Diamond's outing was better than his line indicates. He threw more than 60% of his pitches for strikes. In the one inning he ran into trouble, he gave up a flare single that snow-coned out of Majewski's glove as he dived toward the infield, a seeing-eye grounder up the middle, and a solid single to RC. His WP was clearly a K-pitch that got away from him a bit, but the announcers said it hit off the catcher's shin guard. Doesn't soound THAT wild. Andrus hit lead-off and went 3-5 with a BB and K.
The Arizona League saw the debuts of Wieland, Evans, and Roark. Wieland was solid, and Roark dominated his inning with 2 K and 1 GB. It might take only a few appearances in Arizona before Roark is closing at Spokane. He had a great, but short, career at Illinois. Also Macumba went deep. That's a triple and homer in his first two days stateside.Arizona Box.
Getting close to the mid-season prospect list update. Some rumblings on the board have Feliz, Davis, and Smoak in the top 3. Whatever the case may be, the top-10 has gotten more crowded, IMO, with Borbon, Feliz, Smoak and Maximus moving into my top-10 that was Hurley, Davis, Main, Kiker, Teagarden, Andrus, Beltre, Castillo, Beavan, and Duran before the season.
Feliz and Davis made the BA prospect hot list last week. It looks like Feliz will make a return this week. More honors were bestowed upon Davis by milb.com. Davis and Cruz are co-offensive players of the week in the PCL, and Ben Harrison gets the award for the Texas League.

best news so far
Elvis reaches 4 times and commits 0 errors, and Diamond walks only 1 batter.
Also, has anyone heard anything about any more of our picks signing? We still have quite a few early picks who are unsigned, and I haven’t heard much about the progress of those negotiations.
Smoak and Ross
Both will likely get above slot, so both will be late signs (if they sign) most likely.

we dont sign Smoak, Im going to kill myself.

anything
on our 5th and 7th round picks? both went at or above where they projected, if I recall, and the 7th round pick was a local kid. I figured he would be a relatively easy sign.
And what is up with Petralli’s son? He has been picked like 4 or 5 times now. Why hasn’t he signed (not that it will make or break our class, this year, but still)?
Big Bad Ben
I know he’s old for AA, but I still see him as a contributor at the major league level.

it would be nice
if we could fit him onto the OKC roster sometime this year. he has little else to prove at AA as an ‘81 birthday.
Yeah. I was mulling over where Ben should go.
He really needs to be in the majors late this year or next since he’s already 26. I’d bet the Royals would give him a shot in a trade of minor leaguers or if he were a throw-in to something bigger.
A guy on the cusp of the top-10: Matt Harrison. JMJ and Lemon headed that direction as well.
FWIW, this surprised me ...
Carlos Pimentel - 6-3, 180, 18.5 yrs old
Neil Ramirez – 6-3, 185, 19.1 yrs old
Kyle O’Campo – 6-3, 195, turns 20 yrs old in 2.5 months
I just don’t picture O’Campo as being the biggest oldest guy there for some reason.
BTW, I think Jason Cole told me this was Macumba.
Leonel De Los Santos
I always just figured it was his neighborhood nickname or something – Voodoo or Magic – maybe the other kids thought his mom was spooky or something. Or, it could be that this is his favorite album.
I've
Heard this word.
If I remember correctly, the context I heard it in was something like “crazy shit” or “fucked up shit” Maybe not that colloquial and probably not that vulgar, but something approaching it. Obviously a person called that would be a weirdo.

He's still with DSL1
He has not yet turned the corner with the bat. He’s only 18 still, but, like some have mentioned with Yan, I wonder if he might have pitching in his future. He was reported as a 90+ mph guy when they signed him.

Umm...I'll ask
Who is Roark? Is there some reason his name should be known? Also is there a legitimate belief he’s closer material?
okay that guy
I kept thinking his name was Hurley as well. I guess I got the two of them confused. Speaking of which how do the Rangers decide who’s going to start and who’s going in the bullpen? With a guy like Murphy, I get it. They probably want to limit his innings because he threw college ball this last semester, but what about others like O’Campo and the like. Is there some rule or line of thinking that everyone in the universe but me knows?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Roark
Does he project as a SP or RP?

Diamond
5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K before he ran into some trouble in the sixth inning. Impressive effort.
Something about Wieland is very intriguing.
Well, since he's topping out at 90, maybe 91 with his fastball, he might have to learn some new tricks.
someone said he hit 97
his last start and was consistently around 94, i think he’ll be fine…

Mid-season lists
The mid-season LSB Community Prospect Project is coming soon, starting (probably) July 1st!!!
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Are we going to
make an exception on the draftee rule and include Smoak? I vote yes.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 23, 2008 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions
Yah
That rule was unpopular last year, so the recent draftees will go on.

excellent.
will it be broken up between pitchers and position players or a free for all. I always have a hard time judging bat vs arm. But bat vs bat, or arm vs arm is easier.
Sweet my favorite LSB event!

Free for all
My plan is to go one vote a day for 15 days, then do the next 15 all at once via a super secret method. I figure that way we can get to thirty without dragging it out too long. (The off season list is fun to drag out, but I like to finish the mid-season list as fast as possible in order to get a “snap shot” of the system, so to speak.)
It’s gonna be fun.

He is property of the Rangers
and very likely to sign. And it’s easy to remove a guy if he doesn’t sign (just like it was to remove Danks and Masset).
I don’t really care one way or the other about the other draftees, as I suggested above, but Smoak is so prominent that we might as well include him. He’s a major part of the prospect picture.

I should have added a :)
I personally wouldn’t have Smoak in my top 5 prospect list. Only because he hasn’t taken a pro AB yet. I tend to place more value on players in the upper minors than someone in low A ball. However, I am warming up to Feliz after reading that he is “pitching” and not just racking up #s with his upper 90s FB.

So you would
tend to prefer guys in the upper minors over David Price?
by Brett Perryman on Jun 23, 2008 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions
He was just promoted there, hasn’t pitched yet. And I would say he’s #1, but then they have good prospects with more AA and AAA time so I thought it might be more in doubt for someone with your value system.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 23, 2008 10:38 PM CDT up reply actions
Sickles
Doesn’t Sickles put more value in players that are higher up in the minors?
I am not saying someone like Feliz is not a prospect because he is only in low A. But, should he be ranked higher than Hurley? (Yes, I know he has been promoted.) Hurley is probably a #2 or #3. Feliz has the POTENTIAL to be a #1 or #2.
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
I believe in putting more value in higher levels
but not artificially.

You have to include Smoak
even though he hasn’t played yet. I think if you asked every well known list maker in the land, they’d rank Smoak in the Rangers top 5 or so right now.

Q: Counting on my fingers and toes, I’m guessing Matt West has just about fulfilled his 50-game suspension. Any idea about his timeline getting back into action? I’m guessing he’ll work the rust off at extended spring training then start the season with Spokane. Have you heard anything? Also, along these same lines … heard anything on Miguel Velazquez?
GRANT: West’s 50-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs ended Sunday. But he remains in extended spring training. He will join Spokane when the Indians begin their season in mid-June. He hit .301 in the Arizona Rookie League last year with a .397 on-base percentage. It wouldn’t surprise me if he spent about six weeks in Spokane and got a shot at Clinton for the final month. But it’s also worth noting that West cost himself some trust within the organization with the suspension, so he’s going to have to earn his way to Clinton with actions, not just his performance.
Velazquez, an interesting 20-year-old outfielder from Puerto Rico who was taken in the 2006 draft, is on the suspended list and remains in Puerto Rico. There is no timetable for his return. My understanding is that Velazquez committed a serious offense, though not performance-enhancing drug related. I don’t think he will play on the mainland this year. His future is cloudy given that he’s likely to miss the full season this year.
Almost has to be
a crime, doncha think? I hate to presuppose, but…

cruz just hit a grand slam for okc in the bottom of the 7th
up 7-3 now
If you want some slack, bring your own rope.
Perez' 1st inning
[1st pitch was 92 mph]
ground single to RF
ground single to RF [runners at 1st and 2nd]
K-swinging
SB – runners at 1st and 3rd now
shallow high flyout to RF – runners hold – might get out of this unscathed
K-looking
sweet – 2 seeing eye groundball singles left stranded
The dude he K'd looking, Verbick, was D-II All American last year and had a
college career average of .357. He had a .463 OBP this year.
A 3rd K now.
A little controversy on the ground-out 2B, he either grazed
the top of the batter’s helmet or the bat. He’s clearly not afraid to pitch inside.
Don’t get too many velocity reports, but they did mention the pitch near the batter’s head was 90.
Perez' 3rd inning
soft line-drive single
walk – playing w/fire here
wp – runners advance to 2nd and 3rd
walk – loaded – adversity and the pitching coach both visit the mound
6-4-3 DP – run scores – get the next guy and job well done
can of corn flyout to LF
good ending to a bad start in that inning – phew – score 1-1
Perez' 4th
Didn’t listen real close – somehow a guy got on then moved to 2nd on a balk, but Perez wiggled out of it with a deeeeep flyout and a groundout. Still 1-1.
Boy has some poise.
Bases full in the 3rd. Induces a double play and a lazy fly to get out of the inning with only 1 run scored.
Not that it's a big deal, but
Jason and I will have our top 25 prospect rankings out tomorrow. Just for anybody who happens to care.
Lemme take a stab at guessing Parksie's list ...
1 – Matt Harrison
2 – Matt Harrison
3 – Matt Harrison
...
25 – Matt Harrison
I'm guessing Feliz is #1
given your hint this morning.
Regarding Laird: You know, I think that if Laird is not back yet and they have significant interest in Salty with a good deal available, you go ahead and deal him and make do until Laird gets back. Hopefully Laird gets back in time so that is not an issue, but it really threatens to hamstring the Rangers kind of the way the Otsuka injury did last year.

Some quotes from Eddie
From suburban chicago news, whatever that is
Ed Koncel, a JT graduate and a member of JJC’s national championship team this spring, got the news that he was drafted in the 13th round by the Texas Rangers from an unlikely source.“I had heard that I might be taken in the high 20s or low 30s,” he said. “I watched the first couple of rounds online, then just quit watching because I knew I wasn’t going to be taken for a while. Then my neighbor called and told me I went in the 13th round.
“I had worked out with the White Sox the last couple of weeks and I talked to Texas a while back. Texas knew they were in competition with the White Sox and they really wanted me, so they took me before the Sox could.”
Koncel, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound shortstop who hit .396 with team highs of 9 home runs and 65 RBIs for the Wolves this spring, is more than ready for his pro career to begin.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “They are going to keep me at shortstop, which is where I have played my whole life.
“I think it helped when we won the national title. I did well in the tournament in Texas and it helped get me some exposure.”
Kinsler potential?
Not sure
He might be an organizational type but there is just something about him that I like. He has excellent size and apparently solid defensive ability at SS. If he can stick at SS and handle the conversion to wood at the plate, he might be able to make a name for himself. Regardless, this kid is going to be a fan favorite. Gut feeling.
Why should I keep my eye on Koncel?
Does it have something to do with what you know about Wilmer Font?
Oh, I just don’t know what to make of you anymore, Jason E. Parks!

Andrus
is going to be a popular player if he pans out. He says the right things, is respectful of his elders, smiles a lot. And he’s good, which helps.

Just curious
what was it that you hadn’t heard before? I didn’t really catch anything new there..
by Dirk Diggler on Jun 23, 2008 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Never heard this ...
During that stretch, Andrus was included as a vital piece of the seven-player trade that sent Teixeira to the Braves. Andrus actually first found out a trade was in the works from Max Ramirez, with whom he played alongside for Atlanta’s Class A Rome team and Frisco.“He said, ‘When are you coming?’ And I didn’t know what he was talking about,” Andrus said. “So, he told me I’d been traded. Then a couple of days later, the trade was official.”
Had never heard him talk about MY before. Also, kinda surprised he lists “home run hitting” as one of his attributes, too.
OK thanks
I hadn’t heard that either, but I guess it didn’t really register.
