Rangers in on Inoa

According to ESPN the Rangers and the Reds have joined Oakland as the top bidders for the top international prospect Michael Inoa.  Inoa looks very good and I was disappointed before to see Oakland as the main suitors.  I am now very excited that Texas has gotten into the mix and I hope that they can win out. Here is a story on the top international prospects that talks about Inoa as the best in the class.

That's great!

Inoa and Perez would be a great LHP-RHP tandem to watch on the farm

From BA's Chris Kline back in February

SANTIAGO, D.R.–Normally at workouts or ’showcases’ in the Dominican Republic, three or four scouts sit in the stands and watch.

But Luis Polonia, who has run an academy in the D.R. for the last seven years that has produced 27 signees, teamed up with Born To Play Sports to have an event to coincide with the Caribbean Series. More scouts and front-office personnel were in town than usual, and the workout itself had a feel to what one is like in the States.

And even though there were 25-30 players present, most scouts were there to see 16-year-old righthander Micheal Inoa, who is expected to be one of the top players when the international signing period begins on July 2.

Inoa, a 6-foot-7, 200-pound righty, creates easy velocity through relatively sound mechanics. At the workout, Inoa consistently sat at 91-92 mph with his fastball, topping out at 94. He also throws a softer breaking ball which was inconsistent at times, and will also show a splitter. Inoa turns 17 in September.

In the two innings he worked, just one hitter made contact, and that was a popup to the shortstop.

“Everything’s really easy and the fastball has good life,” said one international scouting director. “For as big as he is, you’d expect him not to be able to repeat as well as he does. But he stays within himself and once he grows more into that frame, you’ll see that velocity start to climb . . . and that’s a scary thing.”

That would just about be the best news of the year, prospect-wise.

And considering all the good stories we’ve had this year (Smoak, Feliz, Max, CD, Martin Perez, ect.) that’s saying something.

But we don’t tend to be in on the true whales down south of the border, so I’ll believe it when I see it.

while your at it, get us a VSL league team or 2 that would freak out some NY teams.

Something about an Inoa

Much like Neftali Feliz, he’s the type of guy who could actually entice someone into choosing Texas as the destination for the quality veteran pitcher they’re trading. So even if you aren’t wild about the monetary risk, it is entirely possible that you could get a return on you investment within 2-3 years, because of his ability. The Mets, for example, couldn’t have pulled off the Santana deal the way that they did without a Guerra. Beckett took Hanley, but also Anibal Sanchez, who was a hot shot at the time before getting hurt. Pedro took Pavano, a top ten caliber prospect, Bedard took Tillman, etc., etc.

When do you stop growing?

How tall could this kid wind up being if he is already 6’7” at age 16.

I was 5’9” when I was 15 but stopped growing…so I don’t know how the growth pattern tends to work with someone as big as he is. Could this kid conceivably be a 6’8”-6’10” guy by the time he is 19-20?

I am all for money whipping the kid too. As much success as they have had in the lower dollar range, I would love to see what they do with a kid who is in the high dollar range this kid is in.

by SaltyDawg on Jun 23, 2008 6:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If he

ends up 6’8”-6’10” like Randy Johnson, then like RJ he’ll probably have a long reach and end up releasing the ball halfway to the plate. Combine that with him probably throwing 97-mph by the time he hits the bigs like R.J. did in his prime, and he’ll probably put up similar K numbers. I wonder if Ryan would get mad and put Inoa in a headlock if Inoa broke his Rangers K’s record…

the way i see it

we have less than a 5% chance of signing martinez anyways. When I saw we were in on Inoa, the first thing that popped into my mind was that this would lessen the sting of not signing martinez. IM not sure about armstrong, but I fully expect them to sign ross.

It’s hard to say on the 18 part, but I’ve heard it thrown around that he could have been in the mix for the top pick and a very realistic top five if he’d been in this draft. In reality I think that the age would have scared some people off, but give an 18 year old his ability, and I think you could make something of those comments.

by ivysafety39 on Jun 24, 2008 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

Mid 1st round money is around 1.5 million. Late first round money is 1 million. As mentioned above, Ross’ rumored asking price is 1.5. If Armstrong wouldn’t take like a million dollars he’s not worth doing, and I really doubt that they’ll even offer him that much. Martinez is a tough case because the spread between what he thinks of himself and what he’s worth is probably too great to connect. But again, if he wouldn’t take like 1-1.25 million, there are much better ways to spend you money (like on one of the upper tier latin kids who would cost about that much).

by Brett Perryman on Jun 24, 2008 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Z, so should....

....should it look more like:
a) martinez – 1.25 mil
b) inoa – 4.75 mil (i throw in the .75 because it sounds like he is good at 4.0 somewhere else)
c) armstrong – 1.00 mil
d) ross – 1.5 mil

and with that spread avaiable, who is worth the money? if we were in on inoa for 4mil, why not turn that into ross, armstrong and martinez?

They were both written yesterday

but the BA article doesn’t have a time stamp, whereas the ESPN one was late in the afternoon. Maybe it’s more up to date. I have heard from Yankees fans that the Yankees are supposedly right in the middle of it, which BA mentions. Good question

I’d guess that in 1964 when the draft was established foreign players were much less of a concern, and that the teams pushing for the draft (the less wealthy teams) didn’t think of it as a problem.

An international draft would be interesting, but if you went to that, you would need to allow a couple of years for teams to adjust and plan ahead. A lot of teams have just poured tons of money into academies and other ways of finding guys in the DR and other places, so I’m sure they’re not anxious for a change right now.

by t ball on Jun 24, 2008 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That makes sense

It just seems like it’s a little sketchy right now. I assume that one of the reasons MLB has to wait on American kids is to give them a chance to finish their education and gain a bit more maturity to handle the situation. The way it is now, it looks like MLB has no such concern for the “foreign” kids. Just throw some money at the poor people, hope they can contribute, and if they don’t then just ship them back to whatever shithole they came from. Yay us.

Let me have a diablo sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it fast I'm in a God damned hurry!

by DaheelzCM on Jun 24, 2008 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well,

they’re education situation is so different, though. Most of these kids would probably be working (or not) and trying to scrape together whatever kind of life they could if they weren’t trying to be baseball players. And it’s a bit patronizing to think that they have no idea what they’re getting into. I’m sure that some of them have heads filled with dreams, but this has been going on long enough that there are probably plenty of guys who didn’t make it around to tell stories and give them an idea of reality.

Callis today

sort of echoes the report that started this thread:

Matt (Boston): What’s the latest news on Michael Inoa? I heard somewhere Oakland offered him $4.5 mil, but I could be wrong. Jim Callis: (2:06 PM ET ) Ben Badler, who’s all over the international scene for us, says Inoa could command more than $4 million to sign, blowing away the record for a Latin American bonus (not counting Cubans). The A’s appear to be the front-runner, though the Reds and Rangers are also in the hunt. He can’t sign until July 2. And no, I haven’t heard anything recently about Edward Salcedo.

Also

Given the option of Inoa and Teheran, who the Braves signed last year for maybe a one-fourth of what this guy might get, Callis chose Teheran. Teheran’s stuff does sound more, umm, electric.

One thing that makes me wonder a little about whether Inoa is worth it is how much people seemed to overrate Rolando Pascual a few years ago. I remember the common thought was that Pascual was more physically dominating than, for example, Deolis Guerra. This guy’s physical description and stuff reminds me a little of Pascual (who also wound up signing for about a third of what was rumored prior to his signing, and who signed with a bit of a surprising choice in Milwaukee.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 25, 2008 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

as much as I’d love for them to stick it to the Braves, it seems silly to just throw money at someone this young, and out of character for their usual MO with the Latin signees. Could this area see the stupid money that used to go to free agents? Nature abhors a vacuum and most teams have some money laying around right now.
