JD on Max Kellerman Show
Probably one of the best podcasts out there. I really wish we had a Max Kellerman type personality here in the D/FW or even Houston area...
Anyways, Max interviews Jon Daniels (sorry if this has already been posted). JD talks about the Ponson release, trading deadline (looks like he's going after a MRP), and the Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez trade (Max is a straight shooter here). A lot of interesting stuff, check it out...
And, for those who think golf is not a sport (dirkatron), you will love, LOVE the first part of the podcast.
Of course, you will need iTunes.
it's the 6/19 one...

i'm trading in my nike blades
for some Callaway X-20’s. I’d have to play 5 times a week to master those clubs.

Nice sig.
Do you actually believe that, or are you just playing devil’s advocate trying to get a reaction for DFW sports fans?

Good gawd
The first two minutes is enough to prove that Kellerman is a gigantic tool. Madden as hard as golf….....
And they both said that more people play Madden worldwide than golf….that’s moronic.
I’m not even a huge golf guy. I can at least see the argument for it not being a sport. But comparing it to a video game….that’s gotta be a bit.

Really?
I don’t see at as bad at all. In fact, I liked it.
I have no idea on the exact figures of how many man-hours as spent each year in this playing golf. But it doesn’t seem completely ludicrous that more hours could be spent playing the more popular video games. Lots of kids play an absolutely ridiculous amount of video games.
Some video games are really, really hard and require just as much hand-eye coordination as the activity of golf.

Well
I guess it depends on your definition of “plays”. If you think more people in the world play Madden regularly, 2 or 3 times a week, in 4-5 hour sessions , for the majority of the calendar year, for 30 years (or are going to, since obviously it hasn’t been around that long) then I say you’re nuts.
And as far as the skill required, that’s just not even debateable. It’s just not.

video games
I think you are stone wrong if you think that golf outplays video games. Have any kids/been to a college lately? Lets exclude PC and just talk consoles. To date there have been ~51 million xBox 360, PS3, and Wiis sold (according to nexgenwars.com). There are estimated to be about 50-61 million golfers in the world (according to google answers). The golfers are defined as a person who has played one or more times in the past year, where as the gamer bought a system, so it doesn’t include people who only play once a year.
As far as the skill required I challenge you to a game of unreal or even counter-strike then we can hit the links.

Um
You’re challenging me to a game of unreal to prove that video games require more skill?
And I didn’t say golf outplays video games in general. I said it outplays a specific video game.
Overall this was a pathetic attempt at a rebuttal.

w/e
you are probably correct that golf outplays a single video game. As for the challenge if you have never tried challenging games (ala Unreal or starcraft) then how would you know about the skill required to play them and thus make blanket statements about their level?

The better question
Is why would you assume I’ve never played them? I’m 25 years old. I cut my first person shooter teeth on Unreal Tournament. I love video games. I’ve logged more hours on Call of Duty 4 in the past year than I’d care to admit.
I also like golf. And golf is much, much harder.

The effort
I suppose that games and golf are both about what you put into them. I’ve never found golf particularly challenging (only been twice) probably because I don’t push myself to be better at it. Games I do. I’ve played against the good gamers, not so with golfers, and can tell you it is pretty hard to beat them.

So video games are more difficult
becuase you are more interested in them? Also, since you say you’ve never played with good golfers, how can you really say video games are more difficult than golf?
Golf is incredibly difficult. Video games can be also. I think they’re pretty hard to compare anyway.

So if you want to be really good at golf
that is easy?
I’m really not following you. I don’t think being good at golf, and being good at video games are mutually exclusive skills.

There was a great article on the story of Kellerman and his brother in SI a while back.

Yeah
The schtick is comparable (and that I-Max show was AWWWFUL), but Kellerman is infinitely more knowledgeable than Rome. I always thought Kellerman should have had his own late-night sports interview show…sort of a Letterman for sports geeks.
