Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

Would You Take On Oswalt?

Apparently Oswalt can be had, http://tinyurl.com/5xxj8s.

For you lazy bloggers, here is the blurb on it:

Astros: Roy Oswalt would consider going elsewhere, but there are very few teams that could make a trade for the right-hander and that would get his required approval.

Houston doesn't have the pieces to acquire pitching unless it parted with Hunter Pence, and that's highly unlikely.

So why not through a poll up before tonights silver boot matchup between Texas and Houston.  Who here would make a run at Oswalt?

I'll say I would, if and only if, Davis,Hurley, and Feliz aren't included.  Oswalt, 30, is locked up for the next three years(possibly four).  He will make 14, 15, then 16 Million for the next three years of service.  His fourth year is an option year which he can opt out of and take a reduced buyout.

So Im not really sure the 'Stros could look for a tremendous bounty.  Yes, he is controlled for three years.  Yes he is a great pitcher.  However, his age and option year on his contract raise red flags.

You trade for Oswalt

he automatically gets an opt out in his contract. Much like M. Tejeda. It was a specific point fixed in the last CBA that only effects a few players signed during a certain time frame that hasnt had any contract changes since.

Add to the fact that he wants to pitch in the south or SD, and has been rumored that he doesnt want to pitch for to many more years.

nah

I like him, but Im thinking the Rangers are 3 years away and he will be well into his 30s by then. Maybe if he was still 27.

Another red flag

He’s not that good anymore.

plus his dimunitive frame

plus the heavy workload, plus watching him pitch this season equals pretty heavy evidence that the current version of Oswalt is nowhere near his prime.

I wouldn’t give up anything close to what it would take.

Did you say "through a poll up"?

Fail.

Yes

I would trade Hurley, Teagarden and one or two others not named Davis, Feliz, Beavan, Main.

Pass

I’ve always liked Roy Oswalt, but he seems to be beginning the downside of his career.

I don’t think we need to be making a trade for an ace-type yet anyway – lets see some of our younger pitchers develop a little more, and see where this team is in a year or two before we go making any huge trades for big-name pitchers.

by LSJ on Jun 24, 2008 6:12 PM CDT reply actions

Yep.

I think he’s begun the downward slide in his career, though I like the guy and think he has great stuff. I think it’s just starting to go away from him, that’s all. So my vote is also no. Unless we got just a ridiculous deal on him. Like two guys or three lesser guys or something. But the likelihood of that is next to nothing.

My three favorite numbers: 10, 32, 36. =)

For me it would depend on the asking price...

his performance this year would have had to hurt his trade value some. If we could work something out without giving up one of the top prizes, I think I do it just to take a flier on him turning it around.

I would

but the prospects I wouldn’t include would be limited to Feliz, Main, Andrus, and Davis…

First Hurley, now Max, and eventually, Davis. man for the first time in a while, it sure feels good to be a Ranger’s fan.

by MayurP on Jun 24, 2008 6:40 PM CDT reply actions

Oswalt

Under those conditions, I think I’d trade for him. But I don’t know why Houston would trade the only decent pitcher they have in their rotation. Plus, it seems like Houston’s owner is under the impression that his team is a playoff contender.

by chrisR on Jun 24, 2008 6:57 PM CDT reply actions

along with

being “under the impression” he must also be “under the influence”.

Please forgive any and all typos, mispellings, etc.
Your kindess in this matter is appreciated.

NTC

Oswalt has a No Trade Clause and won’t be going anywhere. Oswalt as a Rangers is a pipe dream.
