Pretty big news, and will surely mean some roster changes beginning tomorrow (Thursday 6/26). Also makes one wonder if the Hamilton discomfort or the Bradley aches are more than has been reported.
In the meantime, pound out those Kinsler-Young-Hamilton-Bradley AllStar votes!

If they handle this like most promotions
they’ll wait a day to insert him. Of cousre with the Blalock news, maybe they’re actually thinking they need him in the lineup immediately.

Does that mean Smoak is looking at
Clinton to start out when/if he signs?
Also, noticed no promotion for Borbon listed…any ideas on his timetable to Frisco?

Smoak – depends on when he signs – but you’d think CLN is the sweetspot now
Borbon – tick tick tick – within a month?
I'm sure they would like to clear an OFer out of Frisco first
Which means they have to clear an OFer out of OKC for Ben Harrison/Steve Murphy
Which means they have to clear an OFer out of Arlington for…Nellie Cruz??
Though with Davis promoted there will be some DH/1B at bast available for a guy like Harrison.

From the Rangers homepage ...
The Rangers have promoted infielder Jose Vallejo and outfielder J.T. Restko from Class A Bakersfield to Double-A Frisco. ... Infielders Renny Osuna and Ian Gac were promoted from Class A Clinton to Bakersfield. ... Infielder Jacob Kaase has been promoted from low-A Spokane to Bakersfield.
Also …
Donnie Ecker was released
Hollander joined Spokane
Vallejo/Andrus middle infield, that will be interesting

Could this system conceivably see
Boggs, Duran, Hurley, Ramirez, and Davis all lose their prospect tags and still be a Top 5 system?
I think so.
"Here comes the version of Benoit that lets the other team put it out of reach. I hate that version."
-Athos
And
D Murphy and Mendoza and possibly Madrigal/Mayberry/Harrison/Arias also from last spring’s top 30.
If it loses Davis and Ramirez and Hurley, I don’t think that there is enough top end talent to still be top five. But then prospect rankings kind of take a back seat when you start looking at all of these guys actually helping the big league club.

The 40 Trumps All!!!
by thedirkatron on Jun 26, 2008 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions
Well
Ross isn’t top end. Inoa is a long shot. Unless a few guys really step up out of nowhere, Smoak and Feliz would be the only two elite types.
I know you’re joking, but I just had to finish that thought.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 26, 2008 1:37 AM CDT up reply actions
It's still early though
guys like Beavan, Main, Ramirez and Font still have time to establish themselves as elite prospects.
by JimCrankshaft on Jun 26, 2008 1:40 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't expect
any of them to establish themselves as top 50ish guys this season, at this point. I certainly thought that Main could coming into the season, but the guy has missed half of the year. And Beavan would probably have to dominate High A for a month or so to achieve that level. Ramirez and Font just won’t pitch at high enough of a level to have any chance of reaching that level so soon. I guess if Font just went nuts or something maybe.

I think if Martin Perez keeps tearing up Spokane
there’s a chance he might see Frisco by the end of the summer. That’d be pretty impressive, no? A 17 year old in AA? That’d be top 50 material.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
by thedirkatron on Jun 26, 2008 1:48 AM CDT up reply actions
Hah
Please don’t suggest that. I don’t feel like arguing with six guys about the merits of bumping Perez to AA just to get his feet wet.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 26, 2008 1:49 AM CDT up reply actions
Speaking of Spokane
Is it just me or does it seem like the SS pitchers are going an extra inning or two per outing than what we’ve seen the past few years? Hints at Nolan’s edict even trickling down to the kids. Pitch … or die.
I agree with that
if Beavan picked up the K rate and kept everything else relatively close to where it is right now…I could see him sneaking in…but as long as he is working to get the velocity back I don’t see him making that kind of jump.
The wild card will be how soon Smoak signs…what he does in Clinton and perhaps Bakersfield…and how high he can climb because he is a seriously well thought of bat.
"Here comes the version of Benoit that lets the other team put it out of reach. I hate that version."
-Athos
Smoak
I think that even if he doesn’t play this season he’s probably top 50 material. Callis, etc. think very highly of him. He’ll most likely be top 50, as will Feliz as long as things don’t fall apart on him. Andrus’ second half probably goes a long way to determine where he falls, but as long as he’s 270/330/370 or better I expect him to be on there somewhere.
After that (assuming our premise of Davis, Hurley, MaxRam losing prospect status), I think it’s down to who might squeeze into the back of the top 100. And Teagarden, Mayberry if he keeps just lighting it up in AAA, Main, Beavan, Kiker and maaaaybe Borbon are really the only guys with much of a chance of that, imo. I don’t really expect more than one or two of them to make it either. If all of these guys promote, five would be an excellent number for the system.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 26, 2008 2:03 AM CDT up reply actions
Shit...
nevermind, I didn’t see you include his name in the top 50 with Smoak.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I agree on Smoak
but if he gets to Clinton and lights it up…he could be a top 35 guy.
Feliz, especially if he posts similar numbers following a promotion, could be a top 25 guy….you know Goldstein will give him a very high ranking.
Andrus probably is in the 50-65 range given his lack of pop but he has time to improve this year.
Borbon could be top 100 if he puts up solid numbers at AA, but scouts are very wary of his OBP.
I am holding out hope Beavan cracks it…he just needs to up the K rates.
The others you listed are all pretty much in the area you say I would guess, and I can’t think of anyone else.
The best part is when you consider Davis, Ramirez, and Hurley would all be top 100 too and will be half a season removed from being prospects.
Thanks to you, Shroomer, jparks, Jason Cole, MJH and everyone else who keeps us all up to date on this incredibly exciting thing we call the minor leagues.

I had totally forgotten the Murph and Mendoza.
And system rankings absolutely take a back seat to getting to see things like Max Ram hit a 2-run HR to take the lead. But, Feliz will make a jump…Smoak is highly thought of…and the depth is amazing.
You are probably right about high end talent and it may take big 2nd halves from well though of guys like Andrus/Beltre to stay top 5….it’s just amazing a system could lose that many quality prospects and still even sniff being a top 5 system
"Here comes the version of Benoit that lets the other team put it out of reach. I hate that version."
-Athos
Yeah
The remarkable depth building up over the last year really shows when you consider promoting as many as ten quality prospects in a season and you still have a nice system.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 26, 2008 1:41 AM CDT up reply actions
And
The system could jump right back into the top 5 in 2010 with all the extremely young pitching possibly getting into the AA/AAA range and the fact Beltre, Smoak, and others will likely still have their prospect tags.
I won’t throw Andrus’ name in there b.c. I hope he loses his eligibility next summer….
And damn you for tempering my homerish opinion of the 2009 system ;- )
"Here comes the version of Benoit that lets the other team put it out of reach. I hate that version."

Agreed
except that I’m not so sure about Andrus next summer. I could see Andrus, Smoak, Beltre and a handful of elite arms really stacking up as a top system after next season, too.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 26, 2008 1:46 AM CDT up reply actions
Andrus won't lose his status next year
He may see Arlington late…but he won’t be up long enough.
I would just LOVE if he suddenly figured it all out at the plate and forced his way up middle of next year because I want to see that kid play SS for the Rangers ASAP. That comment was more out of the realm wishful thinking than anything else. But he will only add to the collection of 2010 farm talent.
"Here comes the version of Benoit that lets the other team put it out of reach. I hate that version."
-Athos
Another thought....
think about a team like the Reds who will lose Cueto, Votto, Bruce, and maybe Bailey this year and will see their system likely fall significantly. The Rangers are bringing up the same type of impact prospects (rated a little lower, but more of them) and their system should stay at least top 10. Definitely speaks to the depth.

I was really hoping to see CD play in person in a month. I hope he grabs the 1B job and never lets go. Then IF hank ever comes back it will have to be at 3B or DH.
On the other hand, this has to be the most excited I have been about a group of young kids coming up and playing on this team. Hurley, MaxRam, CD, Salty, Boggs, and Duran. Add that to a already fairly young group of guys like Hamilton, Kinsler, BGL, Murphy, Rupe, and of course Eddie G and this is a pretty exciting time to be a Ranger fan.
Plus there is the fact that even with all these guys coming up the Rangers still have probably a top 3 or 4 minor league system. Wow.

we need to just forget about him for a while. He isnt hitting worth crap, he hasnt proven he can stay healthy, and we have 2 catchers on our roster at the moment and one on the DL. If we see TT up, its b/c some1 got injured. He needs to prove he can hit AAA for a half season, he needs to prove he can be healthy regularly all season, and then we can think about TT in Tex.
We just need to slow the horses on TT i think.

Ugh,
I’m so sick of hearing how Teagarden is sucking.
He currently has an OPS of .802. You’d like for his batting average to be higher, but he is walking in over 15% of his PA’s—that is outstanding. He is on base at a .367 clip right now, very healthy for a catcher.
Teagarden is not going to hit like Johnny Bench, but he’s going to be an asset with his patience anyway. Stop looking at the batting average.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
Also remember that he is till dealing with some nagging injuries
which might have a direct impact on his BA..
well im sick of
hearing about how the rangers should trade laird and/or salty and all these people are in love with the idea of TT as our everyday catcher of the future but ignore that the guy is always hurt. if his batting average sucks b/c he’s been hurt all year that says just as much as if he simply just cant get hits. He needs to stay healthy and prove he can be healthy for any form of what could be considered an extended time before the rangers even remotely think about bringing him up.
right now we have a top 5 in terms of catching prospects in baseball on our roster, we have one of the preeminent MiLB hitters just brought up, TT is the third best C prospect in the system right now and he has shown inconsistency due to injuries or is showing an inability to get hits at the next level and he’s the oldest of the 3.
but shit! lets bring up TT and send down one of the 2 of max and salty and trade the veteran when he comes back, we gotta make room for our catcher for the next decade….

Now you're putting words in my mouth, though
I didn’t say bring up TT immediately, he could use the time in OKC. But I’d be fine with bringing him up in September, depending on how things shake out with the other catchers. I’m sure it will play itself out, and it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if Laird and Salty remained with the club until the offseason if a good deal doesn’t present itself this summer.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
and
his OPS has trended up each of the last three months.
TT is like Salty lite, lots of strikeouts, lots of walks, good amount of power.
and didn't debut at 22

4) Bradley (rf)
5) Blalock (3b)
6) Davis (1b)
7) Maxram (dh)
8) Murphy (lf) or JMJ/Cruz if they are brought up.
9) Salty©
The talent in that lineup is insane. Righties wouldnt have a prayer.
Although bradley is probably gone by the time blalock returns, and we still have no word that they are even considering him playing 3b if he ever does come back. Hopefully Davis forces the issue.. granted, he could struggle.
(note: put that based on what I would expect to be done with those players in the lineup, not on how I would arrange it)

Kinsler is the best player on the rangers, BENOIT SUCKS, bring up Harrison
That will NEVER happen
BMac will NOT be bumped from the rotation, JD would never allow that. He would take such a HUGE PR hit if that happens. I see Feldman inserted where Harrison is and BMac holds the 5th spot.
Harrison would have to be lights out or BMac would have to fall apart for Harrison to jump in front of him for the #5.
Since when is JD worried

This also doesn’t look good for Blalock’s situation. I think if Chris Davis comes up and does well for the next couple of weeks, then they will probably shut down Blalock for the rest of the year and get him healed and probably try and ship him off cheap during the off-season.
The next month is gonna be crazy for the Rangers organization!!

I want...
...a t-shirt with “The Future Is Now” or some other such cliche, along with a big picture of Max and Chris Davis hi-fiving/hugging and a huge American flag. And possibly a t-rex.
My tickets
for tomorrow night’s game are looking better and better!
And the promotion of tomorrow night’s Hank Blalock bobblehead being A) sponsored by the Medical Center of Arlington, B) having Hank missing because of injuries, and C) Being the night that his eventual usurper (at 1st) makes his Arlington debut.

saturday night
should be a great game as well. Cole Hamels and Vinny Padz matching up – a couple of my favorite pitchers to watch.

yeah
I’m wanting to go Sat night too, but I have family coming in…but I’m still tempted! You think the wife would appreciate entertaining my family while I’m out at the game? hah

This is
pretty great news to wake up to.

Why not start Chris Davis tonight
he is still batting
AVG .310
AB 29
H 9
SO 7 (yes the strike outs are high but did we not already know this)
HR 3
OBP .382
SLG .724
I know that he doesnt have as many ABs against lefties than righties but I would still plug him in. This is how the line up should look tonight I think.
1) Kinsler (2b)
2) Boggs(lf) kills lefties
3) Young (ss)
4) Hamilton/Bradley (rf)if one is available
5) Byrd (cf)
6) Maxram©
7) Davis (1b)
8) Vazquez (3b)
9) Millwood
Thats as right handed batter lineup we can deliever.
Unless you do Salty at catcher and Max at 1b like they were planning
that’d be more RH.
Let CD debut in a PH role, or he debuts at home. There’s no super rush.

+1
That’s what I was thinking.
CD’s got a strong arm, and god knows he won’t be as bad a fielder out there as the LF the opposition is gonna trot out there tonight.

CD = Adam Dunn?
Is that a fair comparison?

No
He doesn’t walk as much. He’ll hopefully strike out less though.
Should have
clarified but I was taking about him in the OF.

Adam Dunn has a terrible, terrible arm
and is much slower than CD now, though at 22 Dunn may have been just as fast, maybe even faster.
Dunn’s arm is a freaking mystery. He was a big time QB recruit coming out of HS, but at this point his arm rates ahead of only Johnny Damon in terms of shittiness, imo. It’s truly abhorrent.

Poor release
absolutely awful mechanics, bad jumps, doesn’t get behind the ball. Take your pick.
Adam Dunn is a DH disguising as a LF
LF
If he has to play the OF, I’d rather it be in RF. Above-average defense in LF, especially at RBiA, is underrated.
Right
and his arm is more of an asset in right field. Also, didn’t he play RF briefly early in his career? I know that was the plan at one point.

FWIW
Hambone aint gonna be our CF when he’s 31 and he will be in a corner OF spot. So figure out where he goes in that long term plan as well. i gotta think over time he moves to a corners spot if not for anything else than to reduce wear and tear. I assume borbon unless he falls flat on his face has the chance to take the CF spot and him and beltre (if he ever puts it together) can duke it out long term.
Davis in one corner and Hambone in the other is an ok idea, i just really like the range that our OF guys have right now, i think its kind of the way the game is going and slow lumbering OFers kinda scare me for a long term vision. no clue how davis works as an OFer but i assume it isnt in a boggs/murphy rangey kinda situation.

.501 or bust!
I'm talking about this game
in which he should play LF since RF is difficult to play (comparatively) in that joke of a ballpark
No
You don’t bring up the guy as a 1B and who has never played LF and throw him in his first ever ML game and put him in LF. His debut can wait one stinking day so he can play his normal position.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
He's played LF
in Spokane the year he was drafted. He played mostly corner OF that year,
Given that he went from corner OF, to 3B to 1B and his bat continues to click, I doubt it matters much which position he plays as long as he gets to stand at homeplate.
Hey
we did it with Duran!
Although I think his LF adventure may have actually been his second or third game now that I think about it.
Same difference, though, right?

Hmmm...
Why is LF more important defensively in our ballpark than RF? RF is generally regarded as the more important defensive position, no?
I’ve heard this quite a bit, but don’t really understand it.

Yah
Sorry, should’ve made that post a little longer to better communicate exactly what I’m wanting to know.
In our BP there is more territory in LF than RF, I believe, because of the large power alley in LCF. So why not shade the CF over a little that way? Wouldn’t that negate the difference since most of that extra difference is in the alley, right? If you have to play one slow-footed OF, I just don’t get why you’d put the slower defender in RF. I still think that’s the more valuable defensive position, bigger alley or no.
And since tonight’s game is in Houston, if you wanted to play CD in the OF, isn’t their LF much smaller than their RF? That’s what I’m remembering anyways. That’s where Houston plays Cheese Lee, and I don’t think they’d put Lee in the more important defensive position.

by thedirkatron on Jun 26, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions
I think
it’s also deeper in LF. It’s not just the alley, but the depth of the OF. You want someone who can concievably go back on balls pretty well in LF.
Chris Davis has a good enough arm to play in RF, it’s not so much that his deficiencies forces him to RF longterm, but his abilities make him project well in RF
On a side note
I’m getting hooked on having borderline CFs in both corners in Arlington. I see so many balls that Murphy gets to and I think “our previous LF would not have made that out.” I don’t know that I want to see a Mayberry type (or especially a plodder) long term.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 26, 2008 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh, me too
Whenever we run out an OF featuring three of Byrd-Boggs-Hambone-Murphy it’s always just plain fun to watch, and what they do for a pitching staff is vastly underrated.
Is Mayberry that slow? I know he’s not a burner, but I thought he had average speed. Maybe that’s just the racist in me though since he’s all tall and black and muscley.

That was my impression in Frisco
He looks really athletic, but it’s for naught.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
I might get ran out of town for this
But I am expecting Davis to be sent back down in a few weeks when (if) Blalock gets healthy unless some how Cat gets dealt before then. I also expect Mad Max to get sent back down when Laird is healthy.
People will probably scream, but its all about roster management and last ditch trade showcases.
I agree
and think that would be the right thing to do in those cases, though they could just put Blalock back at third if they think he can physically handle it. People need to keep the long term picture in mind. Davis and Ramirez are not going to be hurt by going back down for a few weeks.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
Concur
This is most likely a little sip of coffee for CD, not a grande columbian. Unless, of course, he forces the club’s hand…then things get all twisted up.

taht they split time in the majors and retain enough plate apperances to retain their rookie status for next year. It would be awesome watching those 2 battle David Price for ROY honors
Agree on Ramirez
But strongly disagree on Davis. Max jumped from AA to the majors and although he was impressive last night there is no question he needs more time in the minors to get better defensively. Also facing better pitching, although only AAA not MLB, on a regular basis would benefit him as well. He can slide easily into the 1B/backup C role in OKC when Laird gets back.
As for Davis, I think there is no way the Rangers would have brought him up now if they didn’t expect to keep him here the rest of the season. It took a big amount of confidence to bring him up since he had to be added to the 40 man a full year and a half before he had to be. We have capable candidiates to man 1B until Hank comes back if thats is why they brought him up. You don’t just promote a guy under Davis’ circumstances unless you plan on committing to him.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I agree with you on Davis
If he hits, he’ll stay. Even if he struggles, he’s likely up for the year.
Now, if he completely and totally tanks, I think you could see him sent back down.
