What would be a successful season?

As we approach the midpoint of the season, this team, at last, appears to be headed in the right direction.  The offense is booming.  Kins is a budding star.  We have a catching problem... as in a very good problem.  Young guys are contributing.  E-Hurl and Feldman have pleasantly surprised so far.  Pads has looked good (let's remember he's only 30... as Evan notes and I agree, we might need him if it all comes together in 2009).  Hambone should get a major Dallas street named after him already.  Milton hasn't blown up.... yet... and seems to be getting along in a gelling clubhouse.  As Butters and Ed pointed out today, Chris Davis appears to be on his way up.  (Peace out, rattie.)  The Electrician has appeared to have risen from that slump since the Oakland series.  Everyday has been workmanlike (even if he's not a piece of the future, he's keeping the 8th inning from being a total disaster). Sans the bullpen, I feel pretty good about this team.

With all that in mind... my question is: what would it take for this season to be considered a success?  80-82 wins?  Finish ahead of Oakland?  I think 82 wins would be a great accomplishment, considering the youth movement taking place before our eyes and the revolving door through parts of our rotation.  What do you think?

I chose 82 wins because I believe it would be a great accomplishment to win more than you lose with such a young team. Give or take a win wouldn’t really change that. It’s just a goal.

Realistically

success won’t be measured by how many wins we end up with, but rather by 2 measures:

1) Are the young players given adequate playing time?

2) How JD goes about trades…Does he trade the right pieces and does he receive optimal returns for these players?

+1

But I think winning 82 or more games would be a nice mental boost for everyone on the team.

You make a good point

and I agree. I am gauging where everyone is setting the bar for the rest of this season.

the final record is meaningless at this point.

w/l isn't as meaningful

as seeing some of these young guys sieze roles.

I would consider the rest of the season a HUGE success if…

...CJ could lock down the closer position and make us all comfortable with a lead in the ninth again.

...Salty siezes this opportunity and shows improved defense and power.

...Hurley and Feldman continue to look like serviceable ML starters.

...Max and CD adjust to big league pitching successfully.

...Boggs and Murphy combined look to be above average 3rd/4th outfielders.

...the impact arms in the low minors stay healthy.

Agreed

the only guy that hasn’t been called up yet that I wanted to see get integrated this year is Harrison and it looks like he’ll be up for at least a quick cup a’ joe.

Disappointed with Main’s injury, though. Was really wanting to see him be battling the launching pad in BAK by now…

As Agreen says...

success with a young rebuilding team isn’t measured by wins/loses. It is all about how well the young players are developing and improving as well as maximizing their playing time. Granteed if the kids play well the Rangers will win more games, but we still have to remember to be patient when/if a couple of these kids struggle. Salty is a prime example.

The Rangers also need to continue to build this system and keep it restocked with good young players. They will never out spend the Yanks, Halos, BoSox and some other teams. There are players on this team that don’t fit into future plans. This year’s deadline will be almost as important as last year’s in terms of getting rid of some that aren’t a part of the future and getting back some more good young prospects.

by slc ranger on Jun 26, 2008 9:10 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

To add to that

in my opinion this deadline is a little bit more ambiguous when compared to last year. Last year it was obvious we should try to unload Lofton, Tex, and even Gagne (although there was some debate).

However considering that we are one game above .500, and more importantly, our young guys (MaxRam, CD, Hurley) are starting to play in the big leagues, it is a little bit more confusing this year. It will be extremely crucial that JD figures out a gameplan pertaining to the short-term direction of the Rangers and executes that gameplan effectively. Specifically in regard to Laird, Salty, Padilla, and Millwood.

by Agreen07 on Jun 26, 2008 9:15 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Padilla

has a place on this team for next year. He’s only 30. As EG points out… what happens if this team is ready to contend next year and we’re suddenly short a pitcher? If Padilla is traded it’d better be for a very significant return.

I am still leaning towards

trading Bradley and one of Millwood or Padilla at the deadline. Next year’s draft does not look to be a strong one, and if Bradley can garner 2 or 3 legitimate prospects, I would much rather have that than the picks. His value is at its peak and it is looking more and more like he should play the majority of his games at DH to mitigate the risk of injury. With Ramirez and Davis joining the fold, we have little need for a DH at this point. Trading one of those two would give us a better opportunity to see guys like Mendoza, McCarthy, Hurley, Feldman, Gabbard, and any trade additions in the second half. And frankly, I do not trust Millwood’s long term fitness and Padilla’s long term consistancy, although, if given the choice, I would rather trade Millwood and let Padilla remain a Ranger in his contract year.

Also, and somewhat selfishly, I am hoping this team finishes with a record that shows improvement but also allows the team to draft in the first half of the first round next June, so we can go out and sign an impact free agent without losing our first pick.

by clark on Jun 26, 2008 9:43 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I would rather trade Millwood over Padilla

Padilla is entering a contract year next year…most likely meaning he will produce quality results! Then again, it depends on how much the market is willing to give up this year for Padilla compared to Millwood.

good point

about finishing in the bottom half of the standings so we don’t lose our first rounder when we sign Ben Sheets or CC.

Well

Ben Sheets is an injury risk lately…

2002 – 216.7 IP
2003 – 220.7 IP
2004 – 237 IP

2006 – 106 IP
2007 – 141.3 IP
2008 – 104.3 IP (so far)

That's a risk

I’m willing to take. 140 innings from Sheets >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 200 innings from almost any other pitcher.

What would your max offer be?

by Brian Thomas on Jun 27, 2008 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

3 years guaranteed, $48 million

with 2 one-year options that vest with innings pitched, similar to the way Millwood’s contract is structured. If he meets the incentives, he’s one of the better arms out there and well worth the money. Even if he doesn’t, and only averages 150 innings (under his career average) you’ve replaced 10% of your team’s innings from guys like Mathis as you push down everyone else in the rotation. (I know it’s not quite that simple)

Of course, that kind of depends on how he does the rest of this season. His WHIP is terrific, but his K rates are down the last 2 seasons, so maybe he’s not quite as dominant as he once was. From 2004-2006 he was pretty unique, among the leaders in both K rates and among the lowest in BB’s per 9 with WHIPs close to 1.00. He still has a K/BB of 4-1, and a WHIP of 1.06 right now, but strikeouts are down from 9 or 10 per 9 innings, to about 7. Could be the start of a decline.

Still, he’d be better by a good amount than anyone else on the Rangers staff, and provide quality innings for a couple of years while you await the younger arms. Ok, this ended up much longer than I planned…

You may be right

I’m no good at contract stuff. If he stays healthy all year, that offer would be topped. Some crazy team will probably offer him 5 years guaranteed or something.

How about 4 years guaranteed for $60 million with a $10 million signing bonus paid out over the 4 years? Maybe dangle a vesting option for a 5th year if he balks.

I'd do 4/70 with an innings based vesting option

for a 5th year.

We need to get one of Sheets or Sabathia. We have too much payroll flexibility not to add an ace if we get the chance.

no one else unless it is very one sided.

Progress -- simple as that

I’m not all that concerned about the win/loss columns. I’m much more concerned about seeing younger guys get playing time and big league experience. Guys like Hurley, MaxRam, Duran, Boggs, Davis, etc, etc, and to a lesser extent more experience for Hamilton, Murphy and Kinsler. I’d much rather go through growing season finish the season with a good idea of who’s a player and who’s just a guy.

Also, as long as they don’t start to think they’re seriously in contention for a playoff spot and become ‘buyers’ at the break.

by cgolden on Jun 26, 2008 9:48 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

i dont know about you guys...

This is all very exciting.. Im kinda young but I remeber the playoff runs in the mid 90’s.. living in the New York area didnt make it any easier.. But I’m starting to get that feeling again.. I would like them to play five games over .500 for the rest of the year.. It will let you know where these young kids are at and where they will lead us.. Just nice to see excitment in all of your writing gives me hope.. Thanks..

Three things to make it a succesful season for me

1. Develop some youngsters. Kinsler, Salty, CD, Max, Hurley, Feldman, Duran, Boggs, ect.

2. Make a couple of good deadline deals. I’m looking at you Blalock, Cat, a catcher or two and maaaaybe, if you’re blown away, Bradley (otherwise, resign the shit out of him).

3. Either: a) make the playoffs, or b) finish in the bottom 15 so our ‘09 1st rounder gets protected as hell.
