THT: The AL West
Today, THT has put up an article that talks about each team in the AL West. The author does a good job going over the performance of the Angels and A's so far this season. The commentary of the Rangers and Mariners is lacking.
As for the Rangers, the author points out that they have spent 38 consecutive games within one game of .500. This however, is not a record. In fact, it is not even all that close to the record. The 1980 Red Sox hold that honor with 56 consecutive games within one game of .500. Here is a list of top 12 streaks.
| Team | Year | Games | Comments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Sox | 1980 | 56 | Once you adjust for ballpark, an exceptionally average team. |
| Padres | 2005 | 55 | Finished on a .500 roll. And yet managed to win the division. |
| Indians | 1967 | 55 | Through mid-July the essence of average. Then the bottom fell out. |
| Mets | 1970 | 52 | The WS champs were decidedly average in 1970. Three years later they would go to WS on an average record. |
| Pirates | 1993 | 47 | The year after Bonds left. Less than average after early June. |
| Reds | 1964 | 47 | Average the first two months of the year, scintillating after. Finished second. |
| Athletics | 1890 | 46 | The Players' League Philadelphia Athletics. Out of business a year later. |
| Indians | 1947 | 46 | This .500 streak carried through mid July. Won it all the next year. |
| Angels | 2000 | 45 | An average string that started the first day of the season. Glaus hit 47 HR for the year. |
| Expos | 1974 | 45 | Another one through early July. Remember Bob Bailey? |
| Dodgers | 1964 | 45 | Sandwiched between two World Series teams; this was a mid-year streak. |
| Cubs | 1995 | 45 | The Grace/Sosa/Dunston Cubs. And Frank Castillo |
The "fan graph" for Monday's Mets/Mariners game, however, is amusing.

I, too found the Rangers commentary
a bit disappointing. There’s a lot more going on here than the .500 thing. He could have talked about all the youth, Kinsler’s rise to prominence, Bradley’s great year, the bullpen’s problems, etc. etc.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.

Extrememly disappointing. It would really be nice to get the perspective of an unbiased, credible source.
Of course, I can’t exactly fault the lack of incite on the Rangers. No one cares about them as there isn’t much reason to – unless you’re a fan. We’ve spent a decade in obscurity by losing. Losing, and having nothing of real interest as well.
Although we finally have a team desrving of 500 and on top of that have some real prospects. Would have been nice to read about more than some stupid record about being mediocre.

Troy Glaus
Shouldn’t he be the poster boy for the PED culture? I mean with or without Bonds was a monstar, but Glaus… OUCH
