Winners and losers on the Chris Davis promotion
Evan Grant runs down the winners and losers from the Chris Davis promotion...
I will offer some thoughts on this this afternoon, once my brain is working well again...

Cruz?
Am I wrong or is Nellie a slight loser in this deal? Davis’ call up makes it less likely that we’ll give Nellie another shot, no?
I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.

I think so
At least to the point that it makes the 40 man roster a slot tighter. At least in terms of the 25 man itself, I don’t know that Davis hurts Cruz too much.

Losers
anyone over 30? It’s staggering to think that by year’s end we might have seen the following players called up for meaningful roles:
Boggs, Duran, Mathis, Mendoza, Feldman (as a starter), Murray, Hurley, Ramirez, Davis…
And I’m guessing we’ll see the following before 2008 is done:
Harrison, Madrigal, Gordon, Arias, Mayberry.
With the exception of Gordon, I feel all of those have a chance of being with the club for a significant portion, if not all, of 2009.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.

Add to the list of losers:
American League pitchers for the next 10+ years….

And, as a complement to that adding to the list of winners:
Pacific Coast League pitchers over the next year or two.

for his contract being eaten and a sixpack of bears. Even if he is a 60 hitter in Adam’s world, I think its unreasonable to expect much more from a guy who
A) Is a platoon player
B) is bad defensively whereever he plays
C) had a .781 OPS last year and a .759 OPS this year.

i don't know how well he has to play defensively
i think he gets points for technically being able to play LF, 1B. I guess it has been too long to try him at any other position in the IF but maybe the Rangers do a good job of selling him as an emergency 2B. Either way, late in the game, I think an NL club wouldn’t mind having him on the bench, ready to PH, and play the field in a couple of different ways

He is very poor in the OF, has no arm, and while he isnt going to kill you at 1b… a bad defensive OF who can get by at 1b is not exactly a defensive asset.

the OPS thing is overrated
for cat, he’s a singles hitter, a really good singles hitter and its just a shame we arent in the NL b/c having guys like cat on an NL team i think hes the kinda guy who helps win titles coming off the bench. AL his value isnt nearly that high but i like he dude on my team, i just dont think he needs to play everyday.

shelton can happily sit on the bench (given the alternative is AAA) and be a pinch hitter and emergency catcher.

Pitching
Right, but at least you can go forward with fewer holes on the position player side than a year ago. You have a lot of talent all around the diamond (possibly except SS if Young moves to 3B this winter). If you can sign a Ben Sheets and/or convince Tampa Bay to deal a good arm for Salty you’ve helped the team quite a bit.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
by t ball on Jun 26, 2008 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would
take a chance on Sheets since its unlikely we can sign a top FA SP like C.C. with the money he is demanding. I don’t see a deal with TB unless of their hitters gets injured or they have to trade a SP like Hammel or Jackson when David Price is ready.

starters
well as of right now our 2009 rotation is looking like Millwood, Padilla, Hurley, Feldman, any one of gabbard, BMac, Mendoza, Harrison, Murray
thats not counting us looking like we may sign a top flight FA. If we go into next year with say Sheets, Millwood, Padilla, BMac, Hurley as our starting 5 with Feldman, Harrison, Gabbard, Mendoza, and Murray at AAA I think that would be quite good. Now with the options situation the way it is right now we would actually have to start with Feldman in the majors and either Hurley or BMac in AAA

But after seeing the perennial Loe, Tejeda, Drese one year (or half year) wonder, I don’t have Feldman pegged for anything more then what he is right now: A converted reliever who’s having temporary success in the rotation. Hope he keeps it up.

Aside from chris shelton, i think a slight loser here might be Davis himself.

here's a thought...
...i don’t think this is short term at all… i have a feeling Davis is going to mash from the get-go. i believe this, because i was floored by the numbers Norm threw out this morning… Davis is hitting .300 or better ahead in the count, behind in the count, against lefties, against righties, with runners in scoring position, with bases empty…
the orgy Norm was having with himself and his numbers… it gave the utmost confidence that he will rake immediately…
and even if he doesn’t, he’s an upgrade over Shelton.

If it’s a matter of playing time, I would think that Blalock would get a few more looks at 3b. While Davis is getting experience at 1b, Blalock can bounce between 1b and 3b.

extended look
This damn well be an extended look. You don’t promote a guy and put him on the 40 man roster a year and a half before he is required to be if you have 3 or 4 capable players unless this is intended to be a rest of the season thing. We have Cat, Shelton(had before this move at least), and Max who could play 1B and Blalock coming off the DL in less than a month hopefully. With all that there would be no reason to bring Davis up for a cameo. If he gets sent down this year for anything less than he is absolutely horrible, and by that I mean after 150 ABs or so he is hitting well under .200, then JD needs to be kicked squarely in the groin

marginally disappointed that this might hurt his chances of ever getting rookie of the year honors. Probably won’t make that much of an impact to get it this year, and he might go over the ABs to qualify for next year.
