Someone in the other thread was asking where the Tri Cities are.

That’s where I live.

A little east of Idaho and a little north of Oregon, eastern Washington. Kennewick, Richland and Pasco. We’ve also got an Arena League 2 team. Some people are angry because they’re new in town and they’re more popular than the Americans.

I didn’t know we had Melhuse. Empty minor-league baseball games are kind’ve a downer.

oc to continue our discussion

All I’m saying is that Millwood sucked. Going 5 innings is not commendable when you give up 7 runs. Two innings more or less won’t break this bullpen. They’ll suck regardless.

I don’t expect better from Gabbard, but at 11 million dollars I do from Millwood. So he gets an empty golf clap from me. Being happy that the bullpen didn’t have to go any more is just a hollow moral victory, signifying nothing.

by Hull Fan on Jun 27, 2008 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

Millwood

I was at the game last night. First Ranger game in person in several years since I moved down to H Town. Millwood made me ill….

by srptex on Jun 27, 2008 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

on the contrary...

...i think saving your bullpen… an already-tired bullpen (as i’ve stated)... a couple of innings… is huge.

that was all on him. no way Wash was taking him out.

and i’m not defending him… he was terrible. but, at least he went that far. the third and fourth… hell, the fifth inning were no picnics… but he sucked it up and got them out of the inning.

he literally said one ball width inside and 3-4 inches inside

OK

4 inches or 6 inches neither is close doesnt matter now anyways lets go stache

by blueballlefty on Jun 27, 2008 9:03 PM CDT up reply actions

well, when one understands that the called strikezone

is typically several inches wider than the actual plate, and the argument is rather the pitch is typically called a strike, it does matter.

Tempting.

I’m not really a fan of going to the games because it’s a big, boring empty stadium and teams playing A ball.

This is the first time I’ve ever been home for the summer and old enough to buy drinks, though.

by philkid3 on Jun 27, 2008 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

What's that part of the state like?

You guys don’t get near the rain but is it warmer or what? I know nothing about Eastern Washington, but I’m curious.

by Hull Fan on Jun 27, 2008 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

The climate is pretty similar to east Texas.

100 degree days in the summer aren’t rare, and neither are 20 degree days in the winter. Precipitation is rare, and the landscape is mostly brown and rocky. Rolling hills which are flat by my standards (raised in New Mexico), but not by Kansas standards, and the mountains aren’t far away.

It’s pretty much just dry, western desert landscape. We’ve got the Columbia river, which makes it almost like an inland seaport, though.

Very conservative and agricultural, fairly rural. If you moved here from Amarillo you wouldn’t miss a beat.

by philkid3 on Jun 27, 2008 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

And I should add, I like it a lot out here.

The west side is awesome as well, but I’d rather visit than live there, and the mountains are close enough.

they’d put Hunter in the Texas pen next season rather than leaving him as a starter to begin 2009. Maybe a call-up in the season underway, but can’t see him breaking camp. But, if his K-ball suddenly appears he’s certified nasty.

I LOVE Kinsler

But anyone who would compare Kinsler to Morrow either doesn’t understand one of them as a player or doesn’t understand one of the sports. Not in the same way, but it’s kind of like comparing Michael Irvin to Terrell Owens or Chad Johnson because they’re all good and cocky.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 27, 2008 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

SO

two guys that play very hard, aren’t scared to get dirty and hustle ALL the time. you cant compare those two players?? and I believe TO and Mike are decent comparison’s with TO being a lil more atletic

by blueballlefty on Jun 27, 2008 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay

If you think that Owens and Irvin are comparable, I can understand how you would mistake Kinsler and Morrow as comparable.

It’s not about hustle. Kinsler may some day be the kind of player that Morrow is, but he’s not now.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 27, 2008 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it's the facial expression

a sorta merciless stone-faced purposefulness to their faces
Newberg probably starts there.

by shroomer on Jun 27, 2008 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

it’s just that what’s going on behind that facial expression that differs. Morrow does everything right almost all of the time. His play is smarter and more effective than basically anyone else on the ice. If Kinsler had the concentration level that Morrow does he would be one of the handful of best players in the league.

Running back for the Cowboys

He was a beast…big guy, could run, was Emmitt’s backup for a short while and looked like he was going to be a great change-of-pace guy for them, sort of like MB3 when he first came in.

His career basically ended when, on the last play of a game, he was tackled and broke his hip.

Catcher Adam Melhuse has rejoined the Rockies organization. He initially reported to short-season Tri-City to get in shape and is expected to be promoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Melhuse, who was with the Rockies in 2000 and 2001, will give them additional catching protection, along with current Sky Sox catcher Edwin Bellorin.

Not to sound like a broken record

But Laird is the only one it really makes any sense to trade.

With the numbers he’s put up this year, he probably has just as much, if not more trade value than Salty or Tea right now, considering their struggles… and since he’s a free agent in 2 years, and you always have to beware the Marlon Byrd factor, we’d probably be selling as high as possible right now. Of course the only issue is whether he can get back before the dealine… but if he does, I don’t think the injury will have sapped too much value from him.

But he’s got that 97 heat in his arsenal, he’s got that nasty little split-finger (or whatever it is he has that dives… I’m not the greatest at identifying pitches), plus he’s got a little ferociousness to him. Could someone tell him THROW the ball back to the pitcher please? It seemed like every throw back to Guardado and Wilson was lobbed and they had to reach and stab at the balls to catch them. That has to beat a pitcher down to have to keep doing that.

Let me have a diablo sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it fast I'm in a God damned hurry!

Watching Chan Ho tonight is making me physically ill

He’s sitting at 92 with his two-seamer and getting great downward movement on it.

He’s touching 95 with his four seamer, which features nice late action.

Nice little breaking ball he’s keeping down in the zone.

Take the name off the back of his jersey and I would say he’s looking like the epitome of the sort of pitcher we need here.

was at the game tonight

Kason Gabbard sucked. We left in the 7th watched the rest when we got home. good win = any win is good. A loud guy behind me was saying after the CD homer to throw away the Blalock bobble heads Hank was gonna be DFAed. CD was the man.

Wish I could have seen this game

So real quick, was this another 9th inning from CJ where the defense wasn’t helping him out any or were these hard hits he was giving up?

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

home run... hit hard obviously...

...the hit by Howard was smoked to Michael with the infield shift…

Hit to Young

He had time to get in front of that ball, just chose not to and do one of his backhands instead. Poor defense IMO.

Quick summary

Nice recovery win (Thanks, bullpen).
Gabbard is a problem.
Davis can play some 1B.
Phils have some good hitters.
CJ again wins drama 101.
Eddie is steady.
Kinsler is good.
Rangers when behind frankly don’t give a damn, Scarlett.
Salty better improve a lot.
Padilla can make his AllStar statement tomorrow.
Hamels is going to be a real challenge.
Next five games define tactics going forward.
And to all a good night! :-)

CJ is our closer

As much crap as he’s getting right now, I have to say this. How many people would be upset before the season if they knew up to this point CJ would be 17 for 19 in save opportunities?

It’s quite amazing honestly that he’s only blown two and that simply tells me he has a closer mentality to not let the game slip away if he has a say in it.

CJ had balls tonight…he challenged every single hitter and you know what? He just doesn’t have his stuff right now. He has a good fastball. That’s about as much as he can count on right now.

To me the mark of a closer is how he does when he doesn’t have his stuff. CJ might never be a hall of fame closer, but he has the mindset of one.

Watched some of it

He was butt freaking nasty. The Rev’s must’ve been shaking their heads, saying to themselves that surely this isn’t the same guy who sucked so hard for Texas.

Oh, and I want John Broxton on this team. I wish we matched up better with the LAD. He’s freaking nasty. Pure gas. He’d look oh so good closing games here.
