Minors 6/27

Frisco 5, Springfield 1 - Tommy Hunter went 6 shutout innings, 8 Ks, 1BB nice. Andrus is hitting .311 with a .367 OBP in his last 10 games and was 2 for 5. Ben Harrison needs a promotion. Manny Pina is in Frisco?
In Bakersfield they're currently tied up at 1. Reed has 6 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 4 K. Only run scored on a sac fly.
Neftali Feliz finally looked human. 6 ER and 8 H in 4.2 IP. His night included a wild pitch, a balk, and a 2-run HR.

And...
Nice effort by Ramirez, 6 shutout innings, 7 Ks, 1H, 1BB.
1B Alberto Puello is off to a hell of a start in the AZL, .462/.563/.615. Last year in the DSL he drew 26 BBs vs. 27 Ks. Anyone know anything about this guy?

Ramirez in his three starts
14 IP, 4 H, 7 BB, 17 K, 1 HR, 1.93 ERA
He had a WP and a HB tonight to go with the four balks from his first start.

Marcus Lemon
he’s dont pretty well this season in bakerfield, and it looks like Andrus is putting it together after an injury had slowed him down. What do you guys think about a Andrus promotion to AAA in a month if he gets hot and a Lemon promotion to AA?

No reason to promote Andrus
He’s just kind of treading water.

Agreed
His stats are improving slightly, but I’d leave him in Frisco all of this year. Ditto with Lemon, both have lots of time.

disagree
if you had the benefit of seeing him play regularly, it would be pretty obvious to you that he’s getting much better all the way around; smarter at-bats, seems to be stronger, more comfortable—not pressing
he’s also noticiably more comfortable in the 2 hole than leading off
having said that, I think he needs to stay put in Frisco for the entire season

Feliz's outing was nice until the 5th. He had 8K and 4GO through the 4th.
Also, the announcer seemed to think he had an 87 mph change-up, but I’m pretty certain, without even seeing it, that it would’ve been a slider. An actual change-up in the 4th was clocked at 77 mph, and the announcer reported that Feliz said in an interview that he favored his change-up to his slider. A 95-mph fastball and 77-mph change-up is a great base to build upon.

Hmm
95 mph FB with a 77 mph change doesn’t sound right

77 MPH CU
We know he can throw high 90’s but if he throws his change at 77 I doubt his delivery looks the exact same.

I thought his change was in the 81-84 range?
I believe that’s what it was when Goldstein did the pitch-by-pitch on him.
77 seems too low.

Aren't there problems with the Clinton radar gun?
I believe Jason Cole said it is aimed at the catcher, which would mean the pitches would be about 5 mph slower. If so, that 77 mph change is actually 82 and it all makes sense.

so his fastball would be close to 100?

No
I believe rooster is only referencing the 95 mph in reference to the fact that that’s what Feliz actually throws, not that the gun there had him sitting at that on any particular occasion (while throwing 77 with the change).

I heard 93 on the broadcast.
They don’t report velocity very often, though.

Though having said that
In Feliz’ shorter outings in the past he has approached 100, just not pitching as a starter.

Feliz...
That’s it, demote him. Or put him in the ‘pen, something. These damn kids need to understand at a early age that outings like that won’t be tolerated. Tough love Neftali, tough love.

OKC has to play four 7-inning games this weekend
I wonder if Tommy Hunter will get a spot-start for OKC July 2nd just to relieve the beleaguered Redhawk rotation.
by shroomer on Jun 28, 2008 12:55 AM CDT 0 recs
that's my guess
so that mendoza can slide back into the rotation

Unlikely...
They rarely give us someone for Frisco for just a “spot start”. I think we’ll see a “bullpen” start and hope at least 1-2 starters can pitch a full game since they are only 7-inning games. At least the bullpen is rested after 3 days off in a row.

They felt sorry for Springfield.
He could be on a shuttle. That was probably his best minor league game in his short career. It’s the first time he’s had more K’s than IP in a AA game. if they decide to send Gabbard back to AAA, I could see Mendoza back in a starter’s role with Hunter getting a look in long relief.
