Julio Borbon promoted?
Julio Borbon is on the Frisco Roughriders roster, on the milb site.
Craig Gentry is listed as being on the 7 day d.l., so it may be that Borbon is being promoted to fill in for him.
More on this if and when it is confirmed...

If he did get promoted
And he is there to stay and not just a fill in for 7 days. Does he get a Sept. call up?

He's already on the 40...
I can’t see any reason that he won’t at least spend a few days with the big club in September… even if he isn’t on the field for a single pitch.

Remember
all the haters of Borbon in that draft?
Now he is already in AA?

This
This has been covered ad nasuem, but we hated him as a first round pick. Not as a pick in the supplemental first round.
It seems to me...
there were a lot of people that hated him being picked at all.

Go back and look at the draft thread.
Whoever Brian Hayes is almost had a stroke as I recall.

Come on
Whoever Brian Hayes is? That’s a little blasphemous.

No
Plenty of people hated him at 35, and they hated his over slot bonus and his spot on the 40 (cause it trumps all, you see).

Can we at least agree...
...he’s been better than Downtown Corey Brown, the guy who, at that point, was the most common “why didn’t they pick him instead?” guy?
I, for one, was leery on taking Borbon ahead of Brown, but Brown looks like he’s never going to make enough contact to do anything…
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 28, 2008 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions
My main issue was the MLB contract (that, and the fact that guys with his skill set tend to be overrated)
I would have rather said no and used the pick this year, when we only had one. Picking him at 35 doesn’t hurt too bad.
And people preferred Brown over Borbon? I don’t remember that. Of course I would agree on that.

Lots of people thought Brown would be a better pick
mainly because he had big time power. The feeling seemed to be that the best case scenario was him sticking in center but even if he had to move to right, he had plenty of arm and bat to play there. This year he has struck out 86 times in 262 at bats in Low A ball.
Also...

so, let me get this straight...
we already have 2 guys from last years draft in AA, and neither are the “cream of the crop” of JD’s draft….
People can complain all they want about Daniels, but that pretty damn amazing no matter how you spin it.
Out of the first 110 picks, by my count 10 have reached and stayed at AA or higher with Borbon being the 11th, with 2 being in the Rangers system with Borbon and Reed.
Texas x 2, Det , Stl x2, Mil, Col, Oak, Tor, NYM, and the M’s
Borbon and Hunter*, fyp
You make an excellent point, anyhow.

Damn
i forgot mjh’s hate for JD…

That's just semi-veiled worries related to...
JD’s “answer” to the Chris Young trade, by which I mean the Danks/McCarthy trade.
At this point, it seems like schtick to me.

ERA+ of 86...
but his friend Adrian is doing pretty pretty pretty pretty good (in larry david voice)
Yah
Like I said a while back, Chris Young was pretty clearly the third best player in that deal behind Adrian Gonzalez and Aki.
And he’s a lot closer to Adam Eaton in 4th than he is to Aki in 3rd.

I am very happy about Borbon’s recent progress. I wasn’t even sure if Bakersfield was the best place to start him, since he really didn’t get to play last summer and had to battle the injury his junior year.
Having said that, some of you might be wise to hold off on the draft smack talk until Borbon has a little major league success or is at least really close to doing so. Major college players having success in A-ball (and the Cal League in particular) isn’t exactly a sure sign of stardom. Here’s hoping that he hits .320 and starts walking a little more in AA, but I don’t think that it’s time to talk trash just yet.
You mean.....
kind of like all those others probably should have held off on killing the Rangers brass for taking him in the 2nd round?
Two way street.
Sure
Neither has been proven correct yet.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 28, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions
Yah, probably
But you could say the same thing about Feliz or Beavan or Main or… you know, any prospect in the minors below AA. The point is that he’s not looking like a disaster right now, and that’s exactly what a lot people felt like he would be.
He’s gonna be a Coco Crisp clone in the big leagues starting summer of ‘09.
Believe that.
And that’s a very valuable player.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
by thedirkatron on Jun 28, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions
You could
but I don’t think anyone is talking trash about them. And my point is that a major college player has a little higher level threshold for where they need to impress than, say, a high schooler. The level of play that they are used to is close enough to A-ball that lots and lots and lots of college players who aren’t even good prospect step into A-ball and have a lot of success. For a HS aged guy to do it is much more of a feat.
Not looking to rag on Borbon; I’m quite happy with his season.

Frisco
could be kind of fun to watch again with all of the reinforcements for the earlier desertions now here. I wish that Kiker could earn his way up to join them.
Have you read or heard any reports on how he is doing there?
He looks like he has had some pretty good looking peripherals throughout the season and some pretty great looking starts. The overall ERA and WHIP isn’t looking too hot, but I’m wondering if he is just getting screwed by his defense more often than not. The .346 BABIP in particular caught my attention.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I agree
I think that the ERA is partly a product of his environment. I get the impression that he’s pitched better than his basic numbers would indicate. For what it’s worth, Danks had a 5.24 ERA in his first 13 starts there (granted, he was a year younger). Hurley had a 4.11 in his 18 starts in Bakersfield. Volquez had a 4.18 in 11 starts in his breakout year in 2005. Kiker is giving up more hits than I wish he was, but as you mentioned with the BABIP, I think that you have to alter the way you look at their numbers a little.
I guess I’d just wish that he could be a little more consistent, particularly on the road where his BA against is .344. Everything else is okay.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 28, 2008 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions
What do you think
If the Rangers decided to promote him to Frisco in mid-July, would you be okay with it? I think he needs to get out of Bakersfield and just put together a few solid starts to deserve a promotion. I just don’t think the California league is helping his development much.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
In a case like that
I think you just have to assume that they know what they’re looking at. I want him to be ready, but it would be hard to really know from a distance with middling numbers.
