Mendoza v. Ponson on Wednesday
Per Richard Durrett on the DMN blog, Ron Washington says Luis Mendoza will be starting on Wednesday, and will be in the rotation for the "foreseeable future."
And per Durrett, Mendoza will apparently be going up against Sidney Ponson, in a battle of sinkerballers.

hopefully
ponson does so bad he gets pulled in the 2nd or 3rd.
i wanna see the best hitters in that game. sorry duran, but i WANT vazquez.
this may mean i’d rather see ramirez instead of salty catching. haven’t seen enough of maxram yet.
not sure yet of davis is a better option for that game than cat yet. i know shelton better not play either.

That would be a dream come true
Could you imagine if the lucky target was M.O.B.?
We could finally see the epic outburst.

Heh
Rupe is tied for the team lead in HBP with Padzilla. They both have 6.
The difference is that Rupe has thrown twice as few innings ;)

Beaning
if you beaned a player just because they were a douche half the players in baseball would be beaned.

I can see Wash trying
but Young would get out there first and kick his ass again.

Go Sidney!
You know what bothers me the most about the situation is that the Rangers almost set him up to fail. If they can have 2 “life coaches” for Josh Hamilton, why couldn’t they hook Sidney up with someone as well? He could be rough, he swore way too much, but he was intrisincally a really nice person (he even brought the ball boys hot chocolate when it was cold) and I don’t understand why they didn’t try to help him more. And yes, I know there were probably facts I don’t know about, but I still don’t understand it…

couple things
hopefully he wasn’t dismissed from the team for being a bad guy to have around hamilton as some suggest. if that were the case, hamilton would be very unpopular in the clubhouse.
ponson knew ahead of time that he had 1 chance. i think the rangers actually ended up giving him a couple chances.
unlike hamilton who was a junky and didn’t really make big scenes and news, ponson has been a well known nuisance.
ponson wasn’t putting up all star caliber numbers.
ponson is a dutch knight. texas hates royalty/things that sound like it. we’re simple folk.

The Rangers "set him up to fail"?
Come on…
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 28, 2008 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay, slight exaggeration maybe...
But they knew his history, which is allegedly why they gave him “1 chance”. Why not do everything you can to help him succeed? Assuming that is really why he was released and I’m not convinced of that…this has the Chad Allen situation written all over it.
LOL, Rentz! You don’t have to be a RedHawk for any specific period of time before I defend you! :-)

Come on...part II...
Has there ever been a situation between the Ranger organization and a player, where you thought the player was in the wrong?
Somehow, if this had happened with the BoSox, I don’t think you’d be as sympathetic to Ponson…

Yes, Rafael Palmiero...
But I do think that is the only time that happened! LOL
Actually, if it were the same situation (i.e. the RedHawks were a Red Sox farm club) I think I would have as much sympathy for Sidney. Once you get to know him, its hard to believe he is a bad person. Plus I almost always root for the underdog!

Hamilton and Ponson
Are two VERY different cases.
Josh wanted to change his life.
I have never heard any indication that Sidney wanted to “change his ways.” You can’t help someone who doesn’t want help.

One other difference
Jimmy Johnson, back in the day, released John Roper for falling asleep in a team meeting.
He later said, “You know what I would have done if Troy Aikman had fallen asleep in a team meeting? Quietly gone over to him, tapped him on the shoulder, and said, ‘Troy, would you mind waking up?’ ”.
Sidney Ponson is a John Roper. Josh Hamilton is a Troy Aikman. You cut a lot more slack to the Hamilton/Aikmans of the world, and go thru a lot more to ensure they succeed.

Ponson
I dind’t think he was a redhawk long enough for you to defend him :)
honestly, none of us REALLY know what happened with ponson. I believe he came him with the understanding that this could be his last chance, and I believe when he started doing well he went back to his old ways and figured he’d get chances in better places.
And really I dont even think the yankees would have taken a chance on him had they not been desperate
