Joe Delaney

25 years ago today, Kansas City Chiefs running back Joe Delaney died, attempting to save two boys who were drowning.  He was 24 years old.

When I learned that SI was making its old print articles available online, the first one I looked up was this piece by Frank Deford, on the life, and passing, of Delaney.

Most of you who are younger than me probably have never heard of Delaney, but I'd encourage you to take a couple of minutes and read the Deford article, which made a big impact on me when I first read it back in 1983, and check out Arrowhead Pride's post today...

hmm

i thought that was more recent because i remember hearing things about that when i was in the 1st or 2nd grade. that would have been 87 or 88. must have been teachers talking about something old, or something similar must have happened.

Joe Delaney...

went to the same high school I briefly attended; Haughton High School in Haughton, Louisiana on the opposite side of the Red River from Shreveport. I’m familiar with this story because of my time there, however, much like the fantastic piece on Sam Kellerman that was posted in a Fanpost earlier, when I read something like this it just makes me think that I can only hope that when I am gone that I am remembered as fondly as Joe Delaney was and is today.

Frank Deford... such greatness...

...he should be the host of Real Sports.

Better idea:

Nobody should be the host of Real Sports.

Thanks AJM

Personally, I had never heard of the guy, being born 8 years after it happened, but for some of us young people, its nice to know that we can make a difference in this world…

Thanks, Adam.

I had forgotten about this, but it’s always nice to be reminded of someone of whom no one can say an unkind word. The world needs more Joe Delaney’s. Just think how he would have stood out had he been part of today’s football culture.

I hope Deford lives and writes as long as I live. What a genius with words and thoughts! One of the reasons I subscribe to SI is just to sit back and be amazed at the writing. Gary Smith is one that could be Deford’s equal.

Thanks for bringing this up

While attending Northwestern State in Natchitoches, LA where Delaney played we heard his story constantly. As many times as I’ve heard it, it never grows tiresome.

All I got.

A great read.

My best friend is a big Chiefs fan, so I knew about this despite not being cognizant of the story at the time. That SI article is fantastically written, and somehow Frank Deford manages to write about emotional events without injecting too much emotion (as ESPN’s e-Ticket often does, to my mind).

Thanks for the reminder, Adam.

Joe played for NSU...

in Natchitoches, LA. I was a sophmore in HS when he came to Northwestern State Univ. He was inducted into the NSU HOF. and I am thinking he was inducted into the Louisiana HOF; also located Natchitoches on the NSU campus. They have some of his items in the glass cases at Prather Col. He was a local favorite during his time there.
