T.R. Sullivan on pitching coaches
T.R. Sullivan's Sunday blog notes are all about pitching coaches, with various anecdotes, observations, and quotes about assorted Rangers pitching coaches in the past, and various coaches out there today.
Sullivan is not, it appears, a fan of Oscar Acosta.

Acosta
From Francisco Cordero in April 2006, shortly after Acosta’s passing in a Dominican car accident:
“I feel sorry for their families,” Cordero said. “I got to know Oscar in 2002 when he was the pitching coach. The slider I have, it was because of him. My slider was really long and he worked hard with me, kept telling me I could do a good job. He tightened it, showed me a different grip. I’ve been using it ever since. He helped me a lot.”
Dumbest move of the last 20 years? Really?
i think all these old hacks
get on a conference call and see who can out dumb who…

Unfortunately
that’s been suggested year after year after pitcher-less year.
"I'm extremely complex. I'm not easy to understand." - a) Charles Manson, b) Madonna, c) Milton Bradley.
I think the 3rd bullet point
is the most important. Even the greatest teacher will have students they don’t click with.
Connor gets too much blame. I really don’t have a clue if he’s an asset or a problem, but he is certainly not entirely to blame for the crap on the mound many nights. You can blame him for not taking the pitchers where they are and making them better, but you cannot fire him simply because he is not a miracle worker.
Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.
I totally agree.
and I think TR’s point about Connor being unpretentious and direct is a huge bonus.
talent
Talents makes great pitching coaches. Just ask Mazzone (Atl) and Peterson (Oak.).
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
Dustin Nippert no hitter
the guy just finished off a 7 inning no hitter in Omaha. Could he be figuring it out and learning how to pitch? Is this another AAAA player in OKC?
He is
that is good enough for me. Trade or release at once.
