Tuesday a.m. things
This is one of those mornings where I don't really want to think about baseball. Bleah.
Richard Durrett talks about the struggles of Joaquin Benoit and Doug Mathis yesterday. A solid outing from A.J. Murray today, and he may end up replacing Mathis in the rotation, I'd have to think. That still doesn't solve the disaster which is the Ranger bullpen, though.
Vicente Padilla is on bereavement leave, which allows the Rangers to de-activate him and activate Murray.
Kevin Sherrington has a column up about the Rangers pitching problems.

metcalf had a .695 ops vs lefties last year and actually hit righties relatively well.
this annoys me. i just assumed his moderate success last year was at least against lefties and he could hit in a platoon a bit.
although maybe it was a fluke and he does hit lefties better, the only minor league splits i see around are for 2008 only.

Apologizing...
Yesterday, I smarted off and made a totally inappropriate comment about Padilla’s leave of absence. It’s amazing how stupid one can be in hindsight. I beg your forgiveness.

Hurley
What’s the over/under on Hurley’s call up, if AJ doesn’t work out? Two weeks? I mean, there’s really nobody much else until McCarthy’s back.
More urgent: will the Rangers prioritize college relief pitching in the draft, with the bullpen such as it is?
Or will we just see Madrigal sooner? He’s pitched only twice since his May 20th appearance, kind of weird.
Go Strangers.
Long Term
The draft more of a long term investment Just because the Rangers need bullpen help now does not mean that they will when the players drafted this year are ready for the majors.

I agree
They’ll stay sane with the draft. I think I’m just pulling a WEEI, trying to stoke the fires…

Hurley
This situation is the one that makes me scratch my head. On one hand you have to think he couldn’t do any worse than what we are running out there already. On the other hand the ghosts of Volquez and Dominguez keep shooting through my head whenever I think I want him up here. He has pitched better of late there is no denying that. However, does it do him and the team more good long term to keep him down in AAA for another couple months. Ultimately I think you need to keep him down for another couple months unless he absolutely forces you to bring him up by not just pitching well but pitching dominantly for a 3-4 start stretch. Im talking 7 IP and 0-1 runs allowed with 6-8 Ks and 0-1 BB each time out. He does that and my concerns about his age and readiness will go out the window.
And I hate to bring reality into it but you have to wonder how the Rangers want to work his roster status as well. I imagine if he gets brought up this year he will stay for the rest of the year so as to not unnecessarily burn an option. With that in mind they may wait a little longer so it shrinks the time between when they bring him up and September 1st when rosters expand.
hurley
i think if he had a 3.2 era it would have been a week ago.
but while struggling? who knows. maybe they look at his minor run of success and a couple more good starts could get him up here.
i wouldnt be shocked if they bring him up, but at the same time im not expecting him very soon.
so uh.. clueless.
i think the bullpen fluctuates too much to worry about it in the draft. i think the rangers just go best talent available.

I'm not sure what the opinion is on it.... however,
I ran across some interesting stats over on Newberg about Hurley…...
“This is when his new windup and new found offspeed pitch started, about 3 weeks ago.
vs. Sacremento 7IP 5H 2ER 1BB 8K’s
at Memphis 5IP 5H 5ER 2BB 2K’s
vs. New Orleans 7IP 6H 0ER 3BB 5K’s
at Omaha 6IP 7H 1ER 2BB 4K’s
vs. Omaha 7.1IP 6H 5ER 3BB 4K’s (should have been out before the 8th started in my opinion)
But, for grins, lets put his stats to his last start when he should have came out and that was at the end of the 7th. At the end of 7 during his last start his stats were 7IP, 4H, 2ER, 2BB, 4K’s… which, in all reality, is pretty consistent with his past 3 out of 4 starts.
So, in his last 5 starts, not including that final inning of his last start he has an ERA of 2.81. I think that’s a pretty good run of starts myself. Even if you include that last 1/3 of an inning, his ERA is still only 3.65 in his last 5 starts.”
He possibly has turned the corner. It may not be such a bad thing to give him the call next time a start is needed. To be honest, I am one of the ones that think Hurley will thrive in Arlington and actually have better stats when he gets there.
I’m not so sure calling him up is such a bad idea.
actually a better run then i was thinking off the top of my head
with mathis essentially taking himself out of the picture and who knows what will happen with aj murray…..
ill be very interested in seeing how his next start goes.

Hurley
We recorded a podcast last night, which should be up today.
One of the things I mentioned, vis-a-vis Hurley…I think the Rangers don’t want to call him up until he’s ready and up for good.
I think that the Murrays and Mathises, they don’t have a problem yoyoing, because they are fringey guys anyway, future middle-men or back of the rotation starters. Hurley, they have higher hopes for, and thus are going to be more protective of.

The big question ....
is when? When is he ready? Another 2-3 starts like he has been producing lately? All-Star break? My personal opinion is if he pitches the way he has for another couple/few starts, he should be with the big squad by the middle to end of June. Is this the consensus?
Things will continue to change between now and then.
Padilla and Millwood are handling life issues and will return next week or sooner. Ponson looks to stay in the rotation until someone offers something for him around the ASB. Bmac comes back around then as well if my memory is working today My advice is keep in OKC until everyone is sure he is ready. Why put him in the bigs? What advantage is there bringing him up until September? Just to see him here is not worth developing his potential and preparring him for a career.
As far as the original question....
The over and under….. if he continues to pitch the way he has in his last five starts, I give it by the end of June.

Our offense is ridiculous – the real button-popper: being 2nd-nearly-1st in AL team OPS. Whoever accomplished that – J.D. thru acquisition – Worsh thru onfield emphasis – a combo thereof – done good. Real good. Never ever lift off that organizational pedal.
Our pitching sux. Lowest AL team ERA and dismal K totals. All those extra opponent PA’s are bouncing past our infielders, who anchor an AL-worst team total of 47 errors. The org’s defensive emphasis seems to have moved on from Worsh attempting rehabilitation on bad defenders [fail] to replacing/shifting bad defenders on the diamond. See if we don’t draft nimble defenders and power arms in accordance with a new team doctrine. Ponder long if whether the defensively-challenged Max Ramirez fits in with that scheme any better than Jason Botts. Enjoy the process. Be thankful there appears to finally be a freakin’ process around here.
Max-Ram defense
Isnt it kind of assumed hes going to be a 1b/DH if he plays for the rangers?
You’d have to be a real butcher to make a significant negative impact on a teams overall defense from 1b unless the alternative is a gold glvoer. Or DH obviously.
Botts would have found a way to fit in if he could have hit the ball.
Gerald Laird is my hero.
Max
I keep thinking JD has to sacrifice Bradley and take the leap with Max at DH, but Milton’s got to bring in pitching and really a guy who’s close.
Laird gets dealt (somehow…he’s still such an odd lot to trade) then it’s Max backing up Saltalamacchia and DHing. The bullpen shitting out is the blessing in disguise that will inspire this transition, which is otherwise waiting on Ramirez’s continued development and a ripening trade market.
This team is dreaming of an absolute waterbug at SS. It would help so very much. I bet we get a one-year caddy for Andrus this winter and 2008 is it for Michael at SS. The writing’s on the wall.

draft question
WHY IS IT ON THURSDAY?????
I knew two pieces of info this year, which made me think I knew when the draft was
1> The draft is always on a Tuesday
2> The draft is this week.
Wake up today and WRONG.
My day is ruined…
Sherrington does a nice Fraley impersonation:
“Of course, you could argue that he’s already deserted it, at least in the cases of Young, Danks and Volquez.”
Except, of course, that the rebuilding plan was launched a little over a year ago, when only Volquez was on the team. And to include the Volquez trade without acknowledging the Ruthian bounty we got in return smacks of Gallafraleyism.
"For the record, I did not and do not like the Volquez trade, even though Hamilton is awesome and our best player and I think he’s going to be one of the best players in baseball." philikid3
And who could have forseen
Volquez becoming a front rotation pitcher? Oh wait, me:
“My other HSO along these lines is that I think that the most important guy in the organization is Edinson Volquez. Given how far he came this season he looks like the only potential front rotation starter within this organization’s sights for years (even if one of the new draftees were to become that sort of prospect, it would be awhile).by zywica on Oct 10, 2007 9:20 PM PDT”

I've said it before, I'll say it again
You Da Man…
<<<<<<<<
I can’t find the link right now. But if you’ll recall, I was saying something all last fall: “If Volquez adjusts that arm slot a few degrees, he’ll be dominating to the tune of a sub 2.00 era. We’ll prolly trade him to somebody though, maybe to some noobs in the AL Central. Did I mention New York is for noobs?”
(ends Longhorn impersonation)
"For the record, I did not and do not like the Volquez trade, even though Hamilton is awesome and our best player and I think he’s going to be one of the best players in baseball." philikid3
Do you think
Volquez would have been as good if he didn’t go to Cinci and have his arm slot adjusted? Do you think Mark Conner would have gotten as much out of him?
Where would Volquez be without Dick Pole?
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
