OT: American political first
Regardless of your political viewpoints, you should be proud to be an American today.
We are the first country in the western world to have a person of color on the ballot for highest political office. Ever. Look it up.
Fujimori, a Japanese-Peruvian, is the only possible exception. But I think, since the slavery factor is removed, we can all agree this is a singular event.
So we can parse words, but the larger point, that the country of 300 years of slavery, and Jim Crow, and lynchings, and separate drinking fountains and lunch counters, and get your ass to the back of the bus, and all the myriad other bullshit that persons of color have had to endure, has made a quantum leap forward, at least in the electoral process.
And that is obviously a good thing; praise America.
I don't mean for this to launch any kind of political food fight. Obviously, Adam will delete it if he thinks it is inappropriate.
40 years ago MLK was slain.
Today, a man of color has a 50% chance to be leader of the free world in 8 months.
Think on that.

I've been meaning to ask you...
what’s your favorite Lennon (w/ the Beatles) song? Sort of a hijack, but this is just as good of a place for it as any.

It changes from day to day
Some faves:
I love the production of Dear Prudence, a simple song that evolves into nearly an anthem.
Ditto with Tomorrow Never Knows, just a great sound concept
A Day in the Life – sense a theme here? That band rocked at taking a song from sketchy to amazing in the studio.
Strawberry Fields has to be one of the best songs ever written, even before the production value
Revolution, the fast one
I’m So Tired (which my sig is from)
Yer Blues, nice simple screamer
There’s a Place – early song, read the lyrics, some nice double meanings and profundity mixed in the pop, especially considering it’s from early 1963.
If you’re a big fan you should consider reading Geoff Emerick’s “Here, There, and Everywhere”. Really cool details on how they recorded a lot of stuff from their most prominent engineer.

thanks for the recommendation
my girlfriend is the real Beatles freak, but I have just about every album on my iPod now, so I’m pretty familiar and have a lot of favs. I’ll see if she’s ever heard of that, and look into it. She has all of the anthology stuff.
Yer Blues is definitely my favorite John song.

I enjoy arguing baseball and politics. But I think you’re engaging in some demagoguery here and need to be more objective. The two parties are not so different as you make them out to be, and certainly neither party has a monopoly on virtue or ethics. I cannot respect anyone who claims one party is more or less corrupt than the other. There are good and bad eggs in each. Likewise, both Obama and McCain both have strengths and weaknesses.

You see,
that’s why no one is taking you seriously here. NEITHER party has more ethics or virtue. You PERSONALLY agree with more of their policies, but their stance on abortion and gay marriage do not give them an edge in ethics. Just because the GOP’s platform is more in line with the way SOME Christians (evangelicals) interpret the Bible does not mean they are more virtuous or ethical.

if you can blindly support this corrupt era of republican governance, an era that will be looked back on historically as one of the 5 most corrupt oligarch moments in american history, you have no friggin hope, son.
party politics-wise it doesnt get any worse, the Rocket hearings told me that. So coincidentally all the republicans are firm supporters of rogers character and all the dems are firm supporters of the guy testifying , it you cant agree on cleaning up baseball base on party lines, why the hell are they gonna get anything else agreed on.
i’ve gotten to the point where just railroad all the corrupt guys, ill vote any way possible to get those guys out of here. Joe Barton is my current target. He made sure johnson county and midlotian arent included in the DFW air polution codes. He gets big bucks from those scum guys to allow them to pollute our local area. BTW, did anyone catch McCain’s speech tonight? I don’t know if he’ll listen to any of his advisors, but someone really needs to tell him to dial down the asshole quotient a notch or two. People don’t want to elect a dick as president. He comes off as angry and contemptuous, and most people aside from the Dittoheads just don’t feel that way toward Obama. When he’s trying to be humble or agreeable, he gets this bizarre forced smile on his face that looks really awkward and his voice goes up about three octaves. It’s terribly offputting.

It was a comment about how LBJ
was more important to the civil rights movement than MLK was. Strictly speaking, it is an accurate statement. However it sounded bad and got Clinton some bad press back in her dark days of late February / early March
My point is you can find “racism” in lots of comments, especially about MLK. Suggesting someone is a racist because he doesn’t deify MLK is shallow. The quickness that some are to label someone as racist is what has kept progressive discussions about race from happening for fifty years.
by JBImaknee on Jun 4, 2008 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i don't know if you realize
but nobody used the word racist. you were the first one to bring it up.
i would say that mccain’s comments of the past seem to suggest the movement wasn’t important and hillary just suggests that the president was an integral part of the movement and that mlk would not have been able to accomplish as much without a willing president.
but, i think it was a valid issue to raise about mccain at the time and he’s done a decent job of answering for it.
Rare Gnats Sex

I realize that no one said the word
But I’m able to detect when people are insinuating it. I just think that race in America is a valid issue that should be discussed reasonably and rationally, and when someone says “Well McCain doesn’t admire MLK!” it marginalizes a legitimate discussion.
It is very similar dstar saying that Obama is a Marxist. Obviously Obama has never said anything that advocates communism in any way, though the far left may at times agree with some aspects of Obama’s platform. But all of those policies can be debated rationaly without sides calling one another communists and fascists.
by JBImaknee on Jun 4, 2008 12:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Without
Reaching the merits on anything else, I agree that the only logical underpinning of a “Mccain doesn’t care about MLK” argument is, at its core, racism. I doubt anyone would care if he didn’t have respect for any other number of great Americans.
Whether that argument has any merit is at the discretion of the listener, I suppose.

Socialism
is simply the necessary step to Communism. Marxism is a more radical form of Secular Humanism where they believe in eliminating the resistance to absolute equality (bourgeoise/upper class/aristocracy ) by force, often mass murder. I’m not stupid, I realize 99.9% of people don’t believe what I’m saying because it is ridiculous, I realize that, I just think that Obama would move us toward Marxism. What happens to me if I resist the government when/if he initiates certain Socialist ideals?

Socialism is not a Necessary Step Toward Communism
And Obama isn’t a socialist.
You don’t understand the nuances of Marxism, either. Basically Marx’s theory would have us all living in communes or similar, and there would be no nation-states. He did believe the people would revolt if I’m not mistaken, but I don’t think the Soviet Union or the Bolshevik Revolution was what he had in mind.
If you want to see something that resembles real communism, go to Israel and visit a Kibbutz.

What is "that"
Do you think Obama is running for President only to the proletariat in a violent overthrow of his own Administration? That doesn’t make any damn sense.
Obama is not a Marxist. He’s not a communist. Not a socialist. He’s to the left of you, that’s all. The only US politician that comes close to being any of the above is Dennis Kucinich, and I wouldn’t call him a socialist. Just very liberal.
If you really have an interest in knowing what socialism is, go look at the platform for the Socialist Party. There is one, you know. And look up Socialist parties in Europe while your at it. Until you learn a thing or two I’d advise you to stop throwing these labels around…it just makes you look ignorant to people who know what they’re talking about, and there are a lot of them around here. LSB is a pretty well educated group.

It doesn’t matter where one may fall on the political spectrum.
This is a long thread so maybe I’ve missed it, but I don’t see where you’ve explained what Marxism is. But I can tell you one thing with 100 percent certainty: Barack Obama is not a Marxist. In fact, he’s nowhere close to a socialist, much less a Marxist. If you think that he is, then you do not know what Marxism is. It’s like you’re pointing to a bicycle and calling it an airplane. There’s no room for opinion on this. A bicycle isn’t an airplane, and Obama’s not a Communist. Calling him makes you look foolish. Continuing to call him one is just stupid.

Of any value, each should decide and vote in accord with their view of what the country needs. And that will be difficult. I first voted in a national election in 1958, have never once voted a straight ticket local to national, and have always voted for competency (as I perceive it) over glitz. The problems facing the nation are the same to solve, no matter the party of the candidates.
That said, unless there is a kind of relevation yet unseen to help guide us in 2008, this will be the first time I vote hoping to make sure someone does not win, rather than using platform planks of choice and assessing competency. Helluva note after voting for 50 years.

Straight Ticket
I’ve only been voting since 1994, but I always go straight ticket. I simply disagree with most core GOP values, like trickle-down economics fueled by deficit spending. I don’t mind that they’re business friendly, per se, but when they change bankruptcy laws to make it harder on the consumer while at the very same time running up the nation’s credit card to obscene levels, that’s…well it just doesn’t sit well with me. Then there’s all the social stuff. I’d prefer the government and religious establishment stay as far away from one another as possible. I believe that’s what the framers intended and whether they did or not, I believe it’s necessary to protect one from the other.
It seems we’re in the midst of a political realignment. When the dust settles, I may vote Republican if they produce a platform that makes sense to me. I’ve never shut my mind off completely.

Which is why I've voted more Democrat lately
I’m not fond of their high spending ways, but at least they are realistic in that they believe you have to raise money for what you spend. Republican Economics have been complete VooDoo economics since the days of Reagan.

Hillary Clinton pisses me off
Look I’m neither African American or female, so I am impartial to this race. Hell, iif Mccain picks Bobby Jindol to be his running mate, I’ll probably just vote for him. But the way that Clinto has acted throughtout the race and continiuing today has in my opinion described her as one of ignominy. Even when the delegates have been counted by multiple news sources and Obama has been named the winner, she says she’s gonna wait until she makes her decision. What decision does she have to make about dropping out?? It’s over. Admit it and quit being a sore loser. What’s worse for her is that how is Obama going ot pick her to be VP now that she keeps insisting on dragging out even though that its clearly over. Its as if she is sabotaging the Democrats to make sure the Republicans win…..

Blue Dogs
I doubt they’ll ever get organized in a party where the rising powers (i.e., Kos) are inherently against them. The DLC was organized to take back the Reagan Democrats and Southern Dems, and has basically been destroyed from within the party…

well
the DLC wasn’t even willing to contest places like MS. Begala was the one that said that Dean was squandering money by hiring nosepickers in MS (I meant Mississippi in the earlier post, got abbreviations screwed up).
DLC has their strategy of focusing on key states. Dean has his 50 state strategy. This election cycle will prove (already has proven) which is the better one.

I agree that the 50 state strategy is smart
and that is Dean’s doing. And to give Dean credit, he realizes that moderate conservative Democrats are the only D’s who will win in the South, so that is who he should find to run there. My argument is more with the Kos type people who want to push those same people out of the Democrat party.

i don't think it is a fair characterization

It is a moronic characterization.
The Kos types have no interest in pushing those people out IN THE SOUTH where they are the liberalest who would get elected.
In the northeast where there are much better alternatives than Lieberman, its a different story.

The discussion was around Blue Dogs and my comment was that they wouldn’t be taking over the party anytime soon because Dean is running the party. No where does it say that I think Dean or his strategy is dumb or not working as it was designed.

ugh.
I think the one thing we learned about the first four years of this administration is that Colin Powell was a lot better of a general than he was a politician. I think regardless of one’s political background, Powell failed us all as SoS. He had the clout in the country and the press to take a stand against what was going on in the initial days of Iraq if he really believed it was the wrong path.
Instead, he went along with Rumsfeld etc and then pouted that he was bullied around. I have no respect for that…

let's talk VP nominations:
who is the best pick/worst pick for each candidate (from realistic choices).
My opinion:
Obama
Best – Bill Richardson – would deliver Latino votes
Worst – Hillary Clinton – too polarizing
McCain
Best – Charlie Crist – should guarantee Florida
Worst – Rob Portman – although he would help in Ohio, he’s just too unknown on a national level

Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
by willamos2 on Jun 4, 2008 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
not necessarily
I don’t remember the Kerry map but I think the ones he’s “turning blue” are NM, CO, MO, IA. WI, VA, MD, NH. IN.
I think I got all of the swing states there, but basically the left coast, the north east, MN, HI, and the states I just named. And he could pick off a couple from NE (they split their Electoral votes).
but, like I said, that is really the only map where he can do it without the big three. He does increase his chances a lot by only grabbing one of the big three. but, he doesn’t have to keep PA blue as well as grab OH. one or the other still leads to a win. getting both is gravy.

MD and NH were already blue.
You’d have to expect that McCain will compete in New Hampshire more than Bush did (since NH is historically McCain country).

yeah,
of the states you listed, only NM, CO, MO, IA, VA, and IN would be pickups from 2004 for Obama, and I think McCain is still favored in MO, IN, and VA.
Obviously, that would still be enough delegates to put him over, but I would think it would stand to reason that Obama would be much more served focusing on keeping what he’ll get already from 2004 and targeting Ohio where it was extremely close in 2004.

I agree that this is cool
I have long suspected that America is not nearly as “racist” as it is portrayed to be by some people with agendas. Obviously there are a few pockets of racism, and race was a factor in both the deep south (helped Obama) and probably in Appalachia (helped Clinton).
Obama may lose the general election, and I am sure some people will try to spin it off as a race thing. More likely it would just be that a campaign based on emotion is hard to sustain for 11 months – already you can see that the excitement for the sake of excitement is waning. But the important thing is that Obama has as good a chance of anyone to win the presidency – white, black, whatever. It will be his politics that matter – and I agree that that is an important statement about where America is right now

...do find it annoying that for the most part government spending decisions are made by people who, for the most part have never had to make a tough financial decision in their entire lives… for most politicians in the highest offices, the hardest decision they’ve had to make regarding their money is which hedge fund to go with… and its only increasing national debt and weakening the dollar…
if you really want something to freak-out about, China has something like $1.1 Trillion(thats trillion with a T) us dollars it has gather over several years of export surplus… and they’ve basically gain political leverage over trade disagreements by threatening to dump all those on the international market and, effectively, kill the dollars value in mere miinutes…
yay trade deficit… yay weak dollar…
oh and exxon-mobil last year made just over $5 million last year…. AN HOUR!!... and thats after expenses…
i’m sure glad our current adminsitration has no ties to that field… it might be seen a collusion

Debt
There are a couple of ways to look at it.
On one hand, our debt as a percentage of GDP is in line with other Western Democracies, and much better than most developing nations.
On the other, most of the Western Democracies have been treading water for a while and that’s not where we want to be.
I don’t think deficit spending is a bad thing in and of itself, but we’ve gone WAY overboard with it. Keynesian theory would dictate that you increase government spending in times of an economic slowdown. As part of a strategy. But there’s no strategy to what’s going on now. Bush tax cuts haven’t helped the economy…they’re just kickbacks to the people who elected him. The deficit increases are largely due to those cuts, and it’s politics rather than economic policy.
If we’re going to max out the national credit card, give the MIDDLE CLASS the tax cut. Fuel demand. Everybody gets richer. Trickle down economics is bullshit.
I think we have to re-evaluate EVERYTHING. Tax policy. Welfare programs. Military spending. Education. Trade agreements. So many of these jobs that have been created over the last 20 years are low pay service sector jobs. As a matter of national security, we need to maintain industrial capacity. So I think it’s important to enact legislation to protect our steel industry, and also to coerce the Big Three to be competitive in the global marketplace. This can be done through higher CAFE standards alone, I think. And import tariffs. Both should be done in stages, obviously.
There’s lots we can do as both liberals and conservatives if we’re willing to take a long, hard look at things and have the guts to make some changes.
Anyway, there’s my rant.
