Evan Grant wants question
Evan Grant is looking for questions for the newsletter this week.
I know you guys have things that would make good questions for Grant, since we've been kicking around a lot of them in the comments recently.
Any of you who have said, "Why is Marlon Byrd still here?" or "Why is David Murphy playing against lefties?" or "Why hasn't Nelson Cruz (or JMJ) been called up yet?" or "Why don't the Rangers make C.J. a starter?"...send those questions in to Evan.

I’d be in favor of trading Marlon Byrd and giving Nelson Cruz another shot. If it doesn’t work out, JMJ looks to be ready to go next year.

Solid plan
Hard ot imagine getting much for the Byrdman, though. He’s a good-fielding, below-average hitting corner outfielder for a contender.

Still..
.. he’s MLB and can play some CF. Gotta have more trade value than Cruz, who could be nothing more than a throw-in at this point. Cruz’s ceiling is definitely higher than Byrd’s. Hate to see it get played out somewhere else.
BTW.. I sent the question to EG.

Him and Cat
would be good fits for NL teams. Byrd as a late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner and Cat as a pinch hitter…..

I asked Evan...
Given that Ron Washington has already stated that Chris davis would go down once Blalock is ready regardless of how Davis plays, what happens if Davis puts up great stats over the next few weeks and the team gets back in the race?

Marlon
I’m glad he’s still here. Good in the field. Versatile. Competent at the plate. He’s an under-appreciated Ranger.

it’s Nellie Cruz last hoorah time. Will he become a star or will he become Jason Botts drinking buddy? It’s time to find out folks.

How is he under-appreciated?
He wasn’t traded in ST because management overvalued him.
When he comes to bat at RBiA there is no shortage of fans flapping their “wings”.
Sounds like a lot of appreciation for a pretty average (at best) ML player.

He is very good defensively out there. Problem is he plays too much right now. I would start Boggs over Byrd against every RH pitcher.

Will Jason Kidd improve greatly now that Rick Carslile said he is letting Kidd do his thing?

constant..
The Mavs have been constantly getting worse as a team by not getting any better (improved competition, post playoff loss depression). By not improving their roster. By not drafting well(Not a single contributing player since Josh Howard). By not being very creative(The Jason Kidd trade was extremely uncreative). Bad free agent signings.
And the only rumor I hear about the Mavs is they would like to bring back Diop… While the Rangers arrow is pointed way up, the Mavericks continues to point down.

Donnie Nelson right? I don’t understand why he always seems to get a pass with the media and the fans, and then Cuban and Avery gets all the blame…

Donnie...
Is worthless, he as done absolutely nothing. Mark Cuban hasn’t been the same since the Championship debacle. I suspect you will be seeing more and more empty seats in the AAC

what's your take
who gets the majority of the blame here or do you equally dish out the blame to all 3? Or is it just that these players are underachieving greatly?

I put it on Donnie for having no creativity unlike his daddy..
They lost, they didn’t improve, they get swept in the first round, do nothing to improve. If they roll out the same roster again this year, we probably won’t be a playoff team… which may be for the best, maybe we get lucky in the lottery, maybe Cuban finally figures out Donnie Nelson is incompetent.
by tyd3311 on Jun 30, 2008 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My take:
The decision to resign Terry to such a large deal (for his talent level) was a poor one. If that ultimately falls on Cuban, so be it.
Minor point, but in ‘06, I desperately wanted them to draft Craig Smith instead of a useless player like Ager.
Similarly, in ‘04, we could have easily had Kevin Martin instead of Podkolzine—a player believed almost universally to be useless.
The Kidd trade will have to be vindicated this year, one way or the other. As of now, the failure of the team simply cannot allow it to be called successful. I wasn’t very concerned about the draft picks, but one guy I would really like to see here, Batum, slipped a bit, and we could have had him with our 1st this year. If he becomes what I think he will, that’ll sting.
You could look at the accumulated missteps, and easily -and arbitrarily- assign blame. I understand that sentiment. The truth, though -as it seems to me, anyway- is that in basketball, sometimes you just run out of time.
Teams have windows, and somtimes yours closes before you can take full advantage. It happens quite frequently. I’m not convinced that a smarter man would have Kobe or Lebron playing next to Dirk right now. There wasn’t feasibly much more that could be done.
Admittedly, the agony of the present situation is increased because of how close this team came to a title, but shouldn’t that tell you something? This team DID come that close. I don’t think the ultimate failure should mitigate the relative gains made under Cuban, Nelson, and Johnson.
If we have to suffer for another 5 years, then that is the price of not winning when it was within reach. Nobody can be blamed for that except the collection of men on the floor.

Podkolzine was actually projected much higher in the draft
by most people. He was the classic boom-or-bust type, and a lot of analysts absolutely loved his ceiling.
by BudLight on Jun 30, 2008 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wanted to disagree with you
But then I actually looked back over some mocks, and you’re right—he’s in the 11-15 range quite frequently.
Regardless, it should have been instantly apparent that he had no ceiling. Hell, he could barely even bend his knees.
I’ll give them a media pass on that one, but the eyeball test should have yielded more, in my opinion. I remember being baffled why Martin wasn’t projected higher. An answer I often heard, amazingly, was his frame. His frame. This from a group of writers who would fall in love with Podkolzine.
Granted, nobody, including me, thought he would develop as much as he has, but I think if you’re going to gamble, you should put the odds in your favor as much as possible.

ALL i can say is...
there were empty seats, and quite a few of them, almost every game i watched. Thats it. It’s not an opinion.

Why not?
Most season tickets get bought by companies, and a lot of times they sit unused in some Secretaries desk. You see empty season ticket seats all the time at Ranger games.

Donnie has done nothing??
Look, you can say that in the last few years, the Mavs have been underachievers. But there should be no way that Donnie and the scouting department gets most of the blame . Tell me, where in the draft have they been picking for the last 10 years? The ends of the first round and the second round. You’re going to have a tough time picking in those areas anytime, and yet the Mavs have come up with some players, such as Howard and, the one guy who was actually playing well in Game 6 of the Miami series before that fool Avery took him out for no apparent reason, Daniels. And as for Podkolzine, there were projections that the guy was going to go to the Mavs at 5 (where they took Harris), so for him to slip to 21, is it not an obvious move to take the guy projected to go so high over a guy who went to Western Carolina?

ALL i know..
Since the elder Nelson left, the Mavericks have lost creativity in acquiring talented players.
by tyd3311 on Jun 30, 2008 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who wouldn't though??
That’s what’s happened every place the elder Nelson has left. Milwaukee? They fell apart. Golden State? They fell apart. The Knicks? They went to a championship 3 years later, but otherwise have been mediocre at best for the last 12 years. All three of those have in common that they lost creativity in acquiring players, like you say the Mavs have done, and ultimately paid the price. But yet the Mavs have stayed afloat and Donnie has done a fine, although not quite finished, job so far…

You know
I don’t know who to blame.
Back in the 80s, the Mavs had Norm Sonju, Rick Sund, and Don Carter, who all supposedly had an equal say and would make decisions by consensus. The thing was, when moves went bad (like drafting Bill Garnett), there was no one really held responsible, because everything was via consensus.
Now, it seems like there’s been a similar situation of late, with Donnie Nelson, Avery Johnson, and Mark Cuban all having a significant voice. It isn’t clear who, for example, was ultimately responsible for the Kidd trade, or for (to use a more positive example) bringing Brandon Bass in here. Once again, there seems to be no accountability.
If the problem has been Avery, then the problem should be solved, since he’s gone. If the problem is Donnie, that’s a bigger problem, since he’s still here. If the problem, though, is that the owner is the one really calling the shots and making the personnel decisions, then I don’t know that anything can be done about it.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 30, 2008 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It really comes down
To whether you believe Cuban.
He says that every decision required unanimity.
If you believe him, which I don’t see any reason not to (particularly if the only reason is that you think he’s just an annoying guy, or have some vague sense of him as a control-freak) then the blame, and credit, should be equally distributed.
Among them, would one push harder for a certain move? I’m sure of it. I don’t think that equates to one holding sway over the others, though.

I did like the Rick Carlisle hiring.. maybe the best move they’ve made in a while.

How so?
Not that I disagree, but I want to hear a good argument.
