hmm
well we know that he’s not better than:
clemens
randy johnson
pedro martinez
greg maddux
but he’s certainly on par with or better than
schilling
glavine (a shoe-in given his 300 wins)
john smoltz
mariano rivera
trevor hoffman
troy percival
jimmy key
kevin brown
kenny rogers
andy pettitte
the question is, “how many pitchers that were great between about 1993 thru 2008 should get in?”
mussina certainly is putting up great numbers this year (10 wins) and looks like he could pitch a couple more.
http://www.buchanan4pres2008.org/
NIXON: NOW MORE THAN EVER
I disagree with a couple of those.
Mussina is not on par with Smoltz and Rivera. Those guys are much more Hall-worthy, IMO.

If he pitches a few more years
and can get to 300 wins, he’ll be in. He will probably get 20 for the first time in his career this year which means he’ll have to get 30 wins over the rest of his career and is looking good still pitching for a great offense. I don’t think he deserves it that much, but there is something to say for his durability and consistently above average+ performance.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

OT: Headed out to the game tomorrow at Yankees Stadium
My buddy and I decided to go down to NYC tomorrow night on a whim and see the game. I figured this would be my only chance this year to catch the Rangers in person. I would prefer to go Wed night for the Ponson/ Mendoza showdown but my work schedule wont allow for it.
Oh yeah, we are definitely rocking the Navy Uniforms. Military gets half price tickets on the lower bowl section and when you’re in NYC in uniform the free drinks flow freely. I’ll post pictures and a story on Wednesday of the experience.

nope
i think blalock either needs to go back to third if vazquez has cooled down, or we will have traded bradley and he can DH for a while until we figure out what to do.
2 games over 500 please.
Hard to not get fired up when it's TEX v. NYY
Let’s go Rangers.

Salty/Max
I’d like to see things continue the way they currently are for the rest of the season, with Teagarden maybe getting a look in September.
Salty/Max
is nice but Salty a lot more value than Laird. If we can’t get a great offer than keep Salty and trade Laird.
in any case
we just need him to perform. either look good enough to get max trade value, or good enough that we can feel safe committing to him as the long term catcher.
2 games over 500 please.
I'm not in love with Salty
But if you’re going to platoon, he does hit righties pretty well. (.283/.358/.453 career Maj. League.) I did think Ramirez looked pretty sharp behind the plate last night, though.
he will be excited to play in NY.... i wouldnt bet against him hitting a HR in the series.
2 games over 500 please.
Sooooooooo
Byrdie playing four the 14th straight game, someone needs to tell Ron when your 4th OF is going through a slump you dont send him outthere every day.
Someone needs to tell Ron a lot of things.

unless
he’s being showcased for a trade, has provided great defense, and actually is starting to heat up
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
"actually is starting to heat up"
you missed the boat he’s already gone through the hot streak he is way COLD right now!
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions
He's on a 4 game hitting streak
with an .875 OPS over the past 4 games. You missed the boat on his “way cold” streak.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
he's also got like
4 hits in his last 22+ at bats so who missed the boat? DUDE
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions
...
4 hits, 2 BBs, in his last 16 PAs with a double and a triple being 2 of those hits. Again, signs are pointing to him starting to heat up rather than continuing on a cold streak.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
DUDE
does it matter if every hits a FREAKING HR if your batting .190 who cares if he gets lucky every 5th or 6th AB he doesnt belong in the lineup 14 days in a row

by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions
umm
if he went 1-4 each day with that one hit being a HR, that’s pretty damn valuable. Saying he doesn’t belong in the lineup because he is hitting .286 in his last 14 ABs with an .875 OPS is stupid. He’s not currently in a huge cold streak.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
dude
he has 11 hits in his last 16 games with only ONE multi hit games in there, thats also a beautifull 11 for 55 so, i guess i get it a guy batting .200 over the last half month should be starting every day you guys are rediculous
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:27 PM CDT up reply actions
You said
he is in a massive cold streak. How does a massive cold streak end? By putting up good numbers in more recent games. That is what Byrd did. What he did in a 10 game stretch a week ago doesn’t matter to whether or not he should start today. For the month of June, he is hitting .282/.380/.436 in 92 PAs. As I’ve said, in the past 4 games, he has an .875 OPS in 16 PAs. But again, w/e, look at the 55 ABs he’s had as of late that ignores the 2 double and a single game he had right before that too.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
NO
going 1 for 4 for 4 games does not mean you are out of a 3 week cold slump
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions
he also had 2 walks in one game
with 2 of his hits being a double and a triple…Thus, you end up with an .875 OPS instead of just a .250 BA.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
well maybe
someone should have conveyed that logic to Wash when it was Botts getting taken out of the lineup
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions
I disagree
with just about every possible way Botts was handled
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
also on the end of your comment
your right when we judge cold streaks we usually do it from when they started getting cold!
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions
well
then shouldn’t you also look at when they start getting hot. Like at a time when, I don’t know, they hit something to the tune of an .875 OPS in the recent 4 games?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
and again
going 1 for 4 four games in a row is not breaking out, also getting walks doesnt mean your getting hot, you cant tell me you think Byrd should have started 14 games in a row at the expense of Boggs that just doesnt make any sense.
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions
If you can't
get your facts straight, there really is no point in arguing. He has 3 1-4 games. He has one 1-2 game where he got a single and two walks. Two of his hits in that span were a double and a triple. Therefore, you have an .875 OPS which is signs that he is heating up again. He plays a great CF, he can bring back something valuable in a trade, he has had a great June overall. You’re picking the wrong time to bitch about Byrd getting playing time. That time was a few games ago.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

this is useless logic clearly isn’t apart of your dictionary, even if the little byrdie was hitting .500 over the last 4 games he still shouldnt be STARTING 14 games in a row, all this is, is Ron playing favorites and another example of his bad managing. So BlueBall out (on byrd)
by blueballlefty on Jun 30, 2008 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions
As I said then
Bitch about him starting when he is in the middle of that cold streak and is coming off 0-4 nights. Doing so when he is starting to be on a hot streak and is being showcased for a trade is stupid.

-The Outlaw

Another episode of "TR Sullivan says the darndest things":
From his latest mailbag:
I have read that Tampa Bay is in the market for an everyday right fielder and bullpen specialist. Would Bradley, Nelson Cruz and Guardado be enough to pry David Price away from them?
—Matt J. Garland, TexasNo. You generally don’t trade the No. 1 overall pick for a short-term package, even one that attractive. The Rays see Price being a No. 1 starter for many years to come.
Did he seriously just intimate Bradley/Cruz/Guardado make a package “attractive” enough to accquire somebody like Price?

But let’s tap the brakes comparing Scott to Blanton. That’s very generous.
not saying right now
its more a personal reminder than an actual comparison, but they have a similar build and both are pretty much never gonna be more than mid/back of the rotation innings eaters. Not a bad thing to have, but nothing special especailly once they enter and finish arbitration.
