Where's Ralph Nader?
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
I do

Naw I don't want him to win.

I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
Wait...
....so you’re saying that I have a life savings?
I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
Yeah, it's like video...

If the Dems can get their act together, they should win
If the Democrats can come together and realize that they don’t need to be fighting each other but that their real target is the Republicans then they should win. If Obama simply runs his campaign on two issues, the war and the economy he should do well. If the Republicans are able to make the campaign about other issues, then they have a chance. It’s going to be fun to watch.
I don’t think there is a chance in hell, though, that Hilary is the VP choice. It would be a slam-dunk for Obama but I just can’t see him doing it.

The Dems getting their act together?
In what world would that be?

I'm not saying that it will happen
You are right in that it is a long-shot to happen but if it does, it should be an easy November victory. But, this is the party that blew an election in 2000 after winning the popular vote and having a candidate who was VP during an economic boom and a time of peace. If you can’t put your candidate in based on those things then you have problems as a party and the Democrats definitely do, there’s no doubt about it. But things have gotten so bad for some and this administration has screwed up so horribly and has been so defiant and arrogant about its policies that one would think that the Obama has to be considered the favorite going into November just because people want a true change. I like McCain and Obama, both. I don’t for one minute think that McCain is close to Bush as Obama is portraying him to be. But I have been so disappointed with the Bush administration that it is going to take a major screw-up by Obama in order for me to vote with the GOP again this year.

They've already done a bang up job of
alienating Ohio and Florida.
That’s what, 47 electoral votes there?
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
Maybe.
Florida’s already gone. He probably gets Michigan.
For all the talk of this being such a close race, I have a hard time seeing it. Obama will probably win pretty handily, at least in modern relative terms.
I, though, will again vote for the loser.

Who was it you were campaigning for during primary season?
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.

Big
Blubbery Bill Richardson.
Though it was not because of his political views, I assure you.

you know...
i have absolutely no foundation for this, just an impression…
I would have pegged you for an Obama supporter, and not a McCain supporter (assuming you mean you will be voting for McCain).
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
I did mean
Mccain.
If your impression is because I don’t seem like a cranky old man, then I’ll take it as a compliment.
But of course I did vote for John Kerry. I was 18, and I’d certainly say that my political thinking has become more nuanced since then, but I’d probably still vote the same way (though I have to say as a legal nerd that I’m very very pleased with Roberts and Alito).
if anything it was a compliment
you seem relatively balanced as far as politics is concerned, i find myself agreeing and disagreeing with you pretty evenly.
‘04 was my first presidential election as well, so I’m about the same age, and slightly more conservative it would seem.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
Well
Bush only gets about 3/10 with me on the conservatism scale.
Free trade I like.
Highly competent and intelligent jurists I like.
Tax cuts I like (though I’m still not sure how I feel about them in the context of their proximity to war…there’s a great new book out called “War and Taxes” which addresses this point)
New spending (e.g. Prescip bill) I don’t like.
Useless warfare I don’t like (there’s nuance here, too.)
Incompetent staffing/cronyism I don’t like.
Pandering I don’t like.
Lack of Federalism I don’t like.
So yeah, give me a Goldwater and I’ll vote him in.
Pegged all wrong.
I had you down as hard core left. My apologies.
So why did you work for Richardson?
Basically
It was a free trip (sponsored by the campaign with my friends (who were Richardson supporters) where I would get to speak Spanish and see an actual campaign.
Wasn’t counting on the blizzards and people, though.
Tough for me to like Tax cuts
when you just have to borrow Trillions to have them. If you want to cut revenues, cut expenses. It should be a bedrock principle of any conservative. Unfortunately, since Reagan and the free spending Voodoo Economics became the Republican way, I don’t think we should expect changes.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
I'd love to see it
we haven’t seen much of it though since the Clinton Welfare reform. Republicans talk a good game, but don’t reach for the budget cleaver much.
Personally, I don’t think its possible to balance the budget, given our debt levels, without cutting defense, slashing medicare/medicaid/SS, or raising taxes. Can’t do much about the 8% of the budget that is the interest on the Debt, thanks to the Georges and Ronnie, God bless anyone who wants the retiree vote who cuts the 23% medicare/medicaid or the 20% that is social security. Don’t see Republicans whacking the 19% that is defense.
Right there is 70% of the budget, and I don’t think you can get there by whacking the other 30%. I would really like to see the budget that balances it out without raising taxes.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
I think you'd agree
That absolutely nothing gets totally cut at once. It’s not even feasible.
That said, a long-term solution is composed of incremental movements.
Also, if you really want to get into budget talk, “raising” and “cutting” are not really concrete terms, and they actually just become loaded filler (and yes, I know I mentioned cuts above).
Unfortunately
every time the Republicans talk about balancing the budget, they talk of some far off point in the future, which is during the next President’s term.
The truth is, they have absolutely no plan to recover the revenue lost from the tax cuts, and no plans to cut spending. The Republican plan is to cynically gain the politics of the tax cut, not take any of the political heat from painful spending cuts, and pass the consequences on to future President’s.
Its just a damn shame the American electorate has been stupid enough to fall for it multiple times.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
It's a good thing
I’m not a Republican.
But it’s an even better thing I’m not a Democrat, who would seem to exacerbate each and every concern you have. Unless you’re fine with gigantic
I’m interested in your plan, or President Obama’s plan which should, according to you, balance the budget next year.
Don't see any possible way
to balance the budget without taxation back to the levels during the Clinton years. Personally, I don’t think those were that humongous.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
Feel free
To make donations, but I certainly don’t want to fall victim to your charity.
All-consumption-tax ideas are stupid, but so are gigantic payroll ones.
At times,
Yes. The idea that financing the deficit with debt in all circumstances is wrong is, well, wrong to me.
Of course, reduced spending is the preferred method.
re: "Highly competent and intelligent jurists I like."
Any President that nominates Harriet Meiers for Justice loses any credit and credibility whatsoever on the subject.
Don't knock masturbation, it's sex with someone I love .
Spectacular?
Ehhhh…Alito maybe, but Roberts? A retread of his dad’s nomination with barely any appeals record to stand on…that was more of a back scratching situation for his help with Hamdan
I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
Have you
Read his opinions.
The man’s a great jurist and he’s no revolutionary like Rehnquist.
Appellate court experience is hardly required to be a great Supreme Court justice.
As for Hamdan…right. Make sure to yell real loud, cause you’re on that island by yourself.
BT....
Harriet is a good friend of mine. She was never even given a chance to prove her worth as a nominee. Funny enough her chances were killed by her own party. I can tell you from my own knowledge (30+ years) that she was/is not what she was made out to be in the media.
I don't doubt
That she’s an amazing lawyer, but you hardly ever get the dreaded “Not Sufficient” label on answers, even from the senators on the other side.
She really didn’t demonstrate any meaningful knowledge on the subject, and all we have from her many private meetings are a collective “Meh”.
Seemed like more cronyism, especially when you consider the gushing that went on over Roberts in the Senate.
From my memory....
and I didn’t follow it as closely as most because I was constantly angered at the way she was being treated and decided to not read much that was out there.
It seemed to me that the Dems didn’t fight her because they never got the chance. The repubs (religious right mostly) were after her from the get go because of her perceived thoughts on abortion.
That was
The initial thrust, but honestly it derailed before it even got there.
They didn’t like her school (fuck them), her resume, her intense connection with Bush or her answers.
I was happy to see her nominated too. It got the ball rolling on SMU going big-time.
I also thought.....
that she didn’t have the traditional resume for the job, but that might not be a bad thing. I wondered at the time if a different type of voice might be a good thing.
I was happy to see her nominated. I was sad to the see how she was treated (especially by her own party). I don’t think I’m qualified to say if she would have been good for the job or not. I do know that she is one of the most intelligent people I know and when you combine that with her work ethic I felt like she would do well.
I’ll leave it at that. This is a very personal issue for me and I don’t usually open myself up in this manner in this forum.
Fair enough, friend
I admittedly only have 2nd hand knowledge and anecdotes to go on.
I’ll speak no more on the subject.
Aside: I was at Faidley’s for the first time 2 weeks ago. I have seen the promised land.

Love Faidley's
Miss those crab cakes. The oysters were good too. If you like corned beef, next time you’re in Baltimore give Attman’s a shot. Three blocks from the harbor. Maybe four.
she can still show up in congress when they subpoena her and she doesnt show.

Unsure about the war.
The Republicans picked the one guy who actually still has credibility left on the issue. I think that the housing market, gas prices, and the economy in general should be enough to get Obama voted in, or whoever the Dems had picked. Stick to domestic issues and he should be fine.
I mean, if the Clintons are complaining about him getting media bias, then you at least know the press will be on his side…
Chuck Hagel
Most of the cognoscenti would say he has a good deal more credibility on the issue.

Obama
He needs to make his campaign theme song “paint the white house black”
a lil george clinton is a guaranteed win!

I guess it was the beatings made me wise. But I'm not about to give thanks, or apologize.
I think Democratic voters are more motivated to get out.
That’s really the only reason Obama will win.
But I think the rhetoric of the campaign will be really interesting because both candidates will be appealing to the more moderate segments of their parties and to independent voters.
you could also say
Obama is more appealing to the extreme segments of the Democrat party
than McCain is to the extreme segments of the Republican party.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
Obama probably will win
As for who I WANT to win… I’m seriously considering writing in Jefferson Davis.
I liked Mike Huckabee because he was going to use Chuck Norris to protect our borders.
Obama...
Its all about the black man sticking it to the septuagenarian. And hey at least he’s not Kerry.
Of course you do,
He’s more moderate, like most Americans, than your right wing-nut friends are and he won’t support a theocracy.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.
when
did I ever say I support theocracy? I support Freedom, Justice, and Order.
"The only people who get bored are boring people."
Sure you do,
as long as they are the type of freedom, justice, and order conceived of by right wing republicans and James Dobson.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.
why
the hate for Republicans and Christians? Freedom, justice, and order is pretty clear and absolute.
"The only people who get bored are boring people."
no
come on guys, I may lean very far right, and I am a Christian, but I like to think I am not some close minded dumb like most people on my side. I’ll talk to liberals and democrats.
"The only people who get bored are boring people."
Justice and Order being defined as
indefinite internments in internment camps without any benefit of trial or Geneva Prison rights.
Freedom defined as the ability to be wiretapped any time the state wants to.
Sharky said it, I believe it, that settles it
wiretapping
ties into order. The first two are twisted words from an unhappy individual.
"The only people who get bored are boring people."
wiretapping
doesn’t that impinge on freedom and justice, though?

Ask this question in a month
Things need time to shake out a little.
I will say, however, that I disagree with the people who are putting a bunch of emphasis on the veeps. I don’t think they are very influential.
Don't knock masturbation, it's sex with someone I love .
Not be snarky
but McCain’s veep matters to me at least a little, cause he’s very old and I’m honestly afraid he’ll die in office.
Does that make me an age-ist?
The 40 trumps all!!!

Nope...
anyone who is voting for McCain better keep that in mind. The guy is older than dirt. He very well could kick the bucket while in office, IF he’s elected.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
I just don't see this...
being a close race. I think Obama wins the popular vote around 60/40. I think he also takes Michigan, Ohio, and PA and wins the electoral college fairly easily as well.
If it was Clinton v. McCain I think McCain would have won a close race. Obama is just a very bad matchup for him.
"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates
Surprisingly close for LSB
I still think McCain will win, the electoral map and demographics (if he can get some of those white blue collar Hillary voters on his side) seem to favor him.
If they all win their base states, you look at it and last election came down to Ohio, and of course Florida. McCain seems to be a cinch for Florida, and should play well in Ohio. Not only that but he could actually have a great chance to win in Pennsylvania, again if he can pull some of HRC’s demo, and actually has a slight lead in Michigan, which is a lot of electoral votes that Kerry took last time.
There are a few states like New Mexico and Colorado that Obama can play in that are Republican, but just overall I think the electoral map really favors McCain. Obama will pull a ton of black votes in the south..and it wont mean a darn thing cus all those states are safe Republican.
Oh well, they’re both liberal slime anyway.
Looking at polls in key states like Pennsylvania, HRC may have actually been right, and Obama might be the only candidate they could have put forth in this climate that would actually lose the election. And since liberals bullied Obama to the nomination, I think that’s pretty funny. If he loses, we should hear a homer simpson doh coming straight from, I dunno, all the universities and networks and every other place liberals own.
It’s interesting, on his “victory lap” Obama lost like 8 of the last 14 contests, despite spending a lot more and 24 hour fellatio from all major broadcast networks. The guy is just pretty damn unpopular.
Also, it’s funny how now Democrats are sticklers for rules and not counting every vote all the sudden.
One thing you can count on either way
The war is going to continue, especially if Obama wins.
He’ll probably double it.
right on
Shark. My thoughts exactly as I look over the electoral map. I like McCain’s chances, even though I don’t like McCain. He is, of course, some better than Thing 1 and Thing 2. Who do you like as VP? Somebody who can rally the base(which includes me and Rush and Hannity and Beck) is what I’m looking for. Obviously I liked Romney in the primaries so I would like him as veep, but Bobby Jindal would be interesting as well, probably even more so. He wouldn’t lose voters, that’s for sure, but Romney might with the whole Mormon thing.
"The only people who get bored are boring people."
I think in the end,
McCain will win too. There are enough folks who absolutely will not vote for a black man to offset most of Bush’s legacy.
