Hours before the Draft
And some final Mocks are up:
11. Texas -- Aaron Crow, RHP, Missouri
Texas could pass on Crow due to his cost and take Christian Friedrich, but the Rangers haven't been afraid to shell out for better players, and they've got Crow rated over Friedrich and Martin, should he get here.
11. Texas Rangers: Aaron Crow, RHP, University of Missouri
Crow is not a name that's been mentioned here -- it's been all about Shooter Hunt, Andrew Cashner, Aaron Hicks, Gerrit Cole and Ethan Martin, mostly -- but it wasn't considered a possibility that Crow would be available. They've wanted a good arm if it was there for them and Crow certainly fits the bill while the Rangers have been a team that hasn't worried about signability in the past.
Last projection: Andrew Cashner
11. TEXAS. Despite their ever-present need for pitching, the thought of Hosmer at the Ballpark in Arlington is mighty tempting for the Rangers. They'd also be thrilled if Crow fell this far, and if he doesn't, they'd choose between the top high school pitchers (righthander Ethan Martin from Georgia and Cole) and Friedrich.
Projected Pick: ETHAN MARTIN, rhp, Stephens County HS, Toccoa, Ga.
11. Texas Rangers
The Rangers would be pleasantly surprised to see one of the elite college players fall to them. Barring such a plummet, there’s been some talk of them selecting a college closer, as well as a late surge for high school pitcher Ethan Martin, one of the more athletic and projectable arms in the draft. In this scenario, Crow is just far too good a talent to let him slide any further, and as always seems to be the case, Texas needs pitching.
Selection: Aaron Crow, RHP, Missouri
And mine? I'm sure no one really cares, but, Aaron Hicks...
[Note by Longhorn, 06/05/08 10:12 AM CDT ] Just saw in Jamey's e-mail that Evan Grant has the Rangers taking Aaron Crow and TR Sullivan has them taking Shooter Hunt.

Crow
Alright lets take him, get him signed and off to Clinton. A 2nd half rotation of Beavan, Main, Crow, Font, and Castillo would be down right filthy.

I want Crow...
think he’s gone by 11 though and we end up with Yonder.
Looks like most have Hosmer going 3rd to the Royals.
I’m pretty pumped about the draft. Too bad I have to go to work and wait ‘til tonight to watch it. Thank goodness for the DVR.

I like Crow even more
since I read that his home field has a park factor of 136. I still doubt he’s around at 11, though.

i predict one of the "big names" fall to us
be it crow (most likely imo), hosmer (i seriously doubt he drops) or matusz (i think he goes to balt though)
so my prediction is martin or crow. and ill be happpy as hell about either one!
question: does the draft START at 1 or does the tv stuff start at 1?

ESPN's coverage?
Does anyone know what to expect? I’d be nice to have footage of the players but I didn’t set my DVR this morning….
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
by TheBZA on Jun 5, 2008 10:37 AM CDT 0 recs

i wouldn’t expect much. Callis was the only good thing going for them though, even though he looked like he was about to go to sleep…

Don't expect any footage of players
outside of maybe a five second clip. Of all the people they have on the coverage, only Callis will have any idea who the players are. The rest of the ESPN jokers will spend all of their time comparing the players to current major leaguers, even though they had never heard of the draftee until the pre-draft show meeting. It is better than nothing, but if you expect it to be as polished and full of info as the football draft shows, you will be disappointed.

i think Aaron Crow will be an Astro
if he’s there at 10.
Their window to compete is closing fast with a barren system, Oswalt and Berkman in their primes, etc. I think they want a top college SP that can be in the majors as quickly as possible.

Let's eat some Crow!
It comes down to a combination of Cincinatti taking Lawrie, Houston taking Schlereth, and the ChiSox taking either Castro or Wallace. I’m too tired to check through the mocks, but that’s three variables I’ve seen before.
I’d be delighted with Crow.

A thought
I wonder how many teams will pass on catchers, and instead take players the Rangers covet, because they know they can acquire a more advanced catcher…from the Texas org?
Would you pay Posey the rumored $12m, or give up personnel to get Teagarden?

I would hate to see Posey fall to #11
Since that would liekly mean that none of the other big guys fell and Posey is a player that I’m not that impressed with.
by groundingout on Jun 5, 2008 11:00 AM CDT 0 recs
That would be great to get Crow!
I would be happy with Ethan Martin or Aaron Hicks, if Crow didn’t fall.
Callis has Jemile Weeks at #12 to Oakland. I don’t think that will happen, but I would be cautiously happy if it did.
How far does Scheppers fall? I could see a 4th or 5th round pick used on him, but I suspect someone is going to jump the gun in the 2nd round.

Crow
I saw Crow pitch a couple times. Dude is nasty. And on the biggest stage , he stepped up: a three-hit complete game shutout against Ole Miss in the first game of the CWS. He’s got great velocity and a nasty breaking pitch (I’m honestly not sure what kind of pitch it is). I, like miles, would wet myself if he fell to us. He’s worth the money.

Crow
a strikeout pitcher with heavy groundball tendencies that’s pitched in hitter’s parks all his life.
That’s too good to be true.
by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 11:18 AM CDT 0 recs
Tech
Is as hitter-friendly a park as you’ll find in the Big 12, and he really made it look gigantic.
Of course, I don’t think he allowed more than a couple balls out of the infield.
Helps when you just strike everybody out, I guess.

As opposed to the usual dread
the comes before the Rangers draft selection, this year fate has conspired to give us all unparalleled hope. Let’s see how it plays out. Two hours ago, I would have been very happy to grab Martin, but now, i will feel a twinge of disappointment.
