Draft open thread
This is an open thread for draft talk.
Unlike last year, the Rangers don't have a ton of picks, and I'm whipped (and kind of busy) today, so I'm just going to open up this thread for draft talk, and will add my thoughts, and updates on the Rangers picks, periodically as the day goes on.

So I'm guessing the real action is going to start with the third pick
With Beckham logged in to Tampa at 1 and Alvarex pretty much set in stone to Pitt at 2….

I think it was BA that said
that Alvarez had to be available for Pittsburgh, because if he wasn’t no one in that office would have any idea what to do. It’d be funny if TB picked Alvarez, and the Pittsburgh just kept saying over and over “we pick Pedro Alvarez,” refusing to accept that he wasn’t available.

When does this thing actually start?
I thought it was 11am CST. MLB’s tracker isn’t running yet.

Negro League draft going right now….
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
What's it supposed to be?
Too little, too late.

Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
So who did we get?
hopefully a reliever who can step in right away, i dont care if he’s black and 85 years old. ill take any help we can get.

Find our long term solution at 3B in the Negro League. Opens up more flexibility in the draft.

If the Rangers like Byrd, I can't wait to see what they'll do if they get their hands on Crow.
I’m way too excited about that very remote possibility.
I’m expecting Martin or Hicks, and I’ll be very happy with that.
I’m hoping the second round brings a flame-throwing college pitcher, and the third round brings a RF from Tech into the fold.
flame throwing college pitchers
who make it to the mid second tend to have lots of things wrong with them
by Brett Perryman on Jun 5, 2008 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions
I meant flame-throwing college RP. There seems to be a number of this in this draft.
Maybe it’s a better value to wait to round 3 to pluck one of those.
personally i dont like drafting RP's period
im for drafting SP’s and put them in a rotation until its obvious they cant handle it. drafting RP’s is a waste of time in my book.

i'm afraid...
that matusz is going to end up a barry zito… doesn’t have a good plus fastball, pitches off his secondary pitches… are there a lot of top end rotational pitchers who don’t have a good fastball? also, his got a violent, high seffort delivery… he just scares me long term…

I think Gdawg
really likes him, and that’s about it.
I agree, mediocre fastball + iffy control = bad choice for #11
Small school
kid with a great bender but nothing else that will grade as plus. He gets by on deception. I think he is a reach at #11.
Not a fan aswell
scouts think hes pitching over his head as it is…
Now watch him be a 5 time allstar
Lefties?
Matsuz’s fastball is low 90s, a lot like what Johan Santana works from. His fastball is fine relative to lefties
is it actually consitently low 90s?
or the 88-90 that occasionally hits 92/93 and gets called low 90s?
Gerald Laird is my hero.
i'm with dshep on this...
...i’ve seen multiple places that say 87-89 fastball that occassionally hits 92-93… and more importantly, he pitches backwards… its a bit disheartening since at the higher levels breaking balls get noticed easier and unless you are consistently throwing them for strikes, the fastball will get sat on and crushed…

Two things
First, Zito isn’t a bad thing – if the Rangers had the option of drafting a pre-Zito in the first round, I’d hope they take it.
Second, I don’t really see the comp between Matusz and Zito. Zito’s kind of a unique pitcher with that gigantic curve that has stopped working. I think FireBat’s comp to Santana is much more Matusz (obviously a best-case scenario for anyone – I don’t think he becomes Johan).
The drawback to Matusz is that his numbers are somewhat inflated by playing in San Diego. USD’s ballpark plays similar to Petco – guys just don’t hit home runs there. Of course, guys can’t hit home runs anywhere when they strike out, which is what Matusz has done to guys in college.
Should
I just record it and watch it later?
The suspense is killing me.
And I swear, if it is Cashner or Fredrick, I will be pissed.

scheppers
Kevin Goldstein (10:46:52 AM PT): UB44 (Hermann, MO): So what is going on with Tanner Scheppers? Teams are getting the medical clearance to draft him in the first round. Is there really anything horribly wrong with him like a torn ligament? I mean if you can’t find anything, doesn’t that mean its probably nothing? Thats usually what the diagnosis is when a soft tossing lefty from Savannah State goes to see a doctor about the same problem.
The rumor is that it’s definitely something, I’ve heard both labrum and rotator cuff fraying. There are plenty of teams who do NOT have medical clearance to take him early. One rumor is Seattle at 20, but I think Scheppers is going to be waiting around for a while.

See
Everyone for years demanded ESPN televise the MLB draft. And when they do, and the inevitable talking about the players slowing things down, everyone gets upset…
I wouldn't mind the draft being televised
but in a 50 round draft, there is no need to go this slow. On top of that, ESPN has crappy analysis to offer, worse than their usual bs, and we get to hear a bunch of people yelling for the player interviews.
They have to understand their is a difference between covering
the NFL draft and the MLB draft. It’s not the TV coverage…it’s the way they’re doing it. Hell, they didn’t even change any of the graphics from the NFL draft.
Quick moving
with a representative announcing the club’s selection. A break between each round to recap the players taken, their respective ceilings. Give like 10 minutes for the analysts to pontificate and then go back to busines
The problem is that none of the analysts from ESPN
have any clue about the ceilings of the players.
Well you beat me in replying
but that is along the lines of what I would look for. The NFL draft (TV wise) is built on the suspense b.c. of trading picks and the names everyone knows from college and the unpredictable free fall of big time college names. The MLB draft is not like that, but they seem to want to televise it like it is.
I agree w/ Firebat that analysis should be round by round or every 10 picks or something that doesn’t lead to 5 minutes between picks with several spots of dead air and useless talk from ESPN.
Or at least
do it like in the second day of the draft where there is continuous talking about the draft picks while the draft is going on. There wouldn’t have to be any of this 5 minutes pauses to build suspense. No one knows who these guys are anyways.
That is exactly how it should be done
I couldn’t figure out how to describe it but Day2 of the NFL draft is a pretty good comp. So I guess I was too quick to say it should be nothing like the NFL draft…it should just be nothing like Day 1 and a lot like Day 2
I was not among those
demanding. I now demand that someone else televise it. Perhaps it will be on the new MLB channel when it rolls out on cable?
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.
Its not the talking about the players,
it who is talking about the players

when you get in the minors your playing against the best players from all across the country
ah not the world, clearly.

Who do you think is better?
not saying he is far and a way the best, but he compares favorably with just about any minor league pitcher and thats in less than a year
sure that isnt
a darth vader impression?

I would take both of them if they are the top player on the board at that time
I hate drafting based on need. Skipworth is a couple of years away and if Posey turns out to be a badass, we can always trade him and get a stud back.
dan uggla
not a suprise cuz he was an 11th rd pick
a suprise cuz he was a rule V pick, dumbass.

If Crow goes to the Nats...
I’m hopin the rangers take ethan martin
I wish the would stop trying to make it like the nfl draft,
and by doing so making it nothing like the nfl draft

just search epic fail. You have to go through 20 pictures of Jamey wright, but eventually you’ll find these
posey
Bryan Smith (11:37:58 AM PT): Before the Giants pick, let me say that I think Justin Smoak is a better fit for this organization than Posey. Steven alluded to it a bit earlier—they need absolute impact bats. I like Buster Posey a ton, and I think he’s a sure-fire Major Leaguer. But absolute best case scenario is probably late 90s Jason Kendall, and we’ve all seen the other comparisons thrown around. Smoak has the potential to lead the Major Leagues in home runs and win Gold Gloves. Position scarcity shouldn’t concern a Giants team that is weak at every position offensively.
Kevin Goldstein (11:40:10 AM PT): Lemme say I think Bryan is WAY low on Posey. Best case scenario is .290/.360/.475 catcher with Gold Glove defense. WAY better than Kendall.

good pick for them
and I think that is good news for our propsects of getting crow too. Dont screw it up cincy
ah coaches evidently call ALL the pitches at the college level
no catchers * ever * call a pitch.

Who said that?
someone should tell that to the UT coaching staff and catchers.
Posey is excited.

callis
just called porcello as good as any pitcher inthe minors.
...right.

You guys are
off on Porcello. He’s really good.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 5, 2008 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions
well yea hes really good
but is he as good as any SP in the minors? i just dont think so.
is he a top 10 guy? probably.
but is he better than kershaw? not a chance.
Every pitch thrown to Josh Hamilton is recorded as an E1. -- clark
IIRC
callis has said it before when kershaw WAS in the minors but i might be wrong.

He debuted
THREE levels higher than guys like Main and Beavan.

Was he on the Low A roster on opening day?
If not, than he debuted in extended.
no
his first game was at class A
end of story.
Every pitch thrown to Josh Hamilton is recorded as an E1. -- clark
Yeah, sorry on Beavan
But the jump between starting at Low A and High A is huge for a HS guy. I can’t understand how some people don’t recognize that.

to me its not like justin upton
who sucked, tbu the tools were very clearly there. its not like porcello has 3 plus pitches
Every pitch thrown to Josh Hamilton is recorded as an E1. -- clark
yeah
but are you telling me that there isn’t a pitcher in the minors who has 3 plus pitches right now?
Well
if he is supposed to be the best pitcher in the minors right now, I would think that there wouldn’t be anyone in the minors right now who already has developed the pitches unlike Porcello who is supposed to be able to have 3 plus pitches.
Porcello
is a legit top 5 pitching prospect in the minors right now. He has the makings of the three plus pitches at the major league level that he struggles to command with consistency.
He’s 19 and in A+. My argument is not based on his overall statistical achievement compared to other pitchers.
He made his debut in High A
What do you expect him to do when he skipped short season ball and Low A? The Ks will come.
if hes as good as any pitcher in the minors
the k’s should be there now.

Porcello
Did you see Silver’s article? He called Porcello “very disappointing” this season, and compared him to Jon Garland.
(I’m not taking a position on Porcello, or saying Silver is right—just thought that was interesting).

I wonder what Silver expected him to do this year
Was he supposed to debut in High A and average 12 or 13 Ks and inning? If Silver thought that, than Silver is a bigger idiot than I thought.
Who do you think is better?
not saying he is far and a way the best, but he compares favorably with just about any minor league pitcher and thats in less than a year

Skipworth is from Riverside?
There is so much smog in that city. I’d be wary of drafting any athelete who grew up there…
I think you guys are way too critical
of the broadcast. We could have Chris Berman, Joe Morgan and Humpety Dumpety there.
However…the commercials are KILLING me
I could be in the Rangers bullpen
That doesn’ t make the guys who are currently there any better

Wow
This got interesting all of a sudden
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
not this high?
these people need to do some homework, that is why the NFL draft is so much more better, they actually do their job.
If no one dropped
alonso would not have been a terrible pick at 11. at 7 i agree, smoak is better imo and maybe even wallace too
I wouldnt have minded Alonso
however thats a little surprising for the reds.
gotta think the sox go beckham, nats go smoak, and then we sweat.
maybe the Nats will take Smoak instead of Crow
perhaps?

So wait
guys, just so I have it straight.
With that pick, the Reds, who play without a DH, drafted a guy who plays the same position as one of their young, cheap stars (Joey Votto), a guy who also struggles vs. LHP and a guy who is absolutely worse than the guy they left on the board (Justin Smoak)?
Did I get that right?
But he's not
Justin Smoak is a better player. And a better defender. And a better Athlete. And just play better
i forgot
what you say is gold. oops, sorry. No other team should have different scouting views than you. My bad.
smoak is much much better than alonzo

we're probably getting all worked up
and we’ll end up with Cashner

that'd be awful
Smoak and Crow sitting there, Nolan walks out and pushes selig out of the way and says Cashner Cashner Cashner!

though it wouldnt surprise me if houston went with the kentucky lefty because he’s cheap

Where I was praying for Jenkins or Mendenhall to fall to us….
Then we took Jones
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.

like the Draft my saints had. Where we kicked Cinncinnati’s ass and took Sedrick Ellis
the astros will take smoak if hes there for them
at least i saw that speculated.

i guess they'd convert him to OF then?

or Wallace/Friedrich if Smoak and Crow go the next two.

Now the Nats have Justin Smoak and Aaron Crow staring them in the face. If they take Smoak, the Astros take a sigh of relief and pop Aaron Crow at 10. If that scenario unfolds, that would likely leave the Rangers with Ethan Martin at the top of their board at 11.
