Draft open thread

This is an open thread for draft talk.

Unlike last year, the Rangers don't have a ton of picks, and I'm whipped (and kind of busy) today, so I'm just going to open up this thread for draft talk, and will add my thoughts, and updates on the Rangers picks, periodically as the day goes on.

So I'm guessing the real action is going to start with the third pick

With Beckham logged in to Tampa at 1 and Alvarex pretty much set in stone to Pitt at 2….

I think it was BA that said

that Alvarez had to be available for Pittsburgh, because if he wasn’t no one in that office would have any idea what to do. It’d be funny if TB picked Alvarez, and the Pittsburgh just kept saying over and over “we pick Pedro Alvarez,” refusing to accept that he wasn’t available.

I thought it was 11am CST. MLB’s tracker isn’t running yet.

Negro League draft going right now….

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

Find our long term solution at 3B in the Negro League. Opens up more flexibility in the draft.

If the Rangers like Byrd, I can't wait to see what they'll do if they get their hands on Crow.

I’m way too excited about that very remote possibility.

I’m expecting Martin or Hicks, and I’ll be very happy with that.

I’m hoping the second round brings a flame-throwing college pitcher, and the third round brings a RF from Tech into the fold.

i'm afraid...

that matusz is going to end up a barry zito… doesn’t have a good plus fastball, pitches off his secondary pitches… are there a lot of top end rotational pitchers who don’t have a good fastball? also, his got a violent, high seffort delivery… he just scares me long term…

Matsuz’s fastball is low 90s, a lot like what Johan Santana works from. His fastball is fine relative to lefties

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

is it actually consitently low 90s?

or the 88-90 that occasionally hits 92/93 and gets called low 90s?

by DShep on Jun 5, 2008 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

i'm with dshep on this...

...i’ve seen multiple places that say 87-89 fastball that occassionally hits 92-93… and more importantly, he pitches backwards… its a bit disheartening since at the higher levels breaking balls get noticed easier and unless you are consistently throwing them for strikes, the fastball will get sat on and crushed…

Two things

First, Zito isn’t a bad thing – if the Rangers had the option of drafting a pre-Zito in the first round, I’d hope they take it.

Second, I don’t really see the comp between Matusz and Zito. Zito’s kind of a unique pitcher with that gigantic curve that has stopped working. I think FireBat’s comp to Santana is much more Matusz (obviously a best-case scenario for anyone – I don’t think he becomes Johan).

The drawback to Matusz is that his numbers are somewhat inflated by playing in San Diego. USD’s ballpark plays similar to Petco – guys just don’t hit home runs there. Of course, guys can’t hit home runs anywhere when they strike out, which is what Matusz has done to guys in college.

scheppers

Kevin Goldstein (10:46:52 AM PT): UB44 (Hermann, MO): So what is going on with Tanner Scheppers? Teams are getting the medical clearance to draft him in the first round. Is there really anything horribly wrong with him like a torn ligament? I mean if you can’t find anything, doesn’t that mean its probably nothing? Thats usually what the diagnosis is when a soft tossing lefty from Savannah State goes to see a doctor about the same problem.

The rumor is that it’s definitely something, I’ve heard both labrum and rotator cuff fraying. There are plenty of teams who do NOT have medical clearance to take him early. One rumor is Seattle at 20, but I think Scheppers is going to be waiting around for a while.

Kevin Goldstein (11:15:29 AM PT): We’ve started, and the Rays are on the clock. As I stated on Unfiltered, they decided late last night that Tim Beckham is the best player available, and they’re taking him.

Quick moving

with a representative announcing the club’s selection. A break between each round to recap the players taken, their respective ceilings. Give like 10 minutes for the analysts to pontificate and then go back to busines

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Well you beat me in replying

but that is along the lines of what I would look for. The NFL draft (TV wise) is built on the suspense b.c. of trading picks and the names everyone knows from college and the unpredictable free fall of big time college names. The MLB draft is not like that, but they seem to want to televise it like it is.

I agree w/ Firebat that analysis should be round by round or every 10 picks or something that doesn’t lead to 5 minutes between picks with several spots of dead air and useless talk from ESPN.

by SaltyDawg on Jun 5, 2008 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Or at least

do it like in the second day of the draft where there is continuous talking about the draft picks while the draft is going on. There wouldn’t have to be any of this 5 minutes pauses to build suspense. No one knows who these guys are anyways.

That is exactly how it should be done

I couldn’t figure out how to describe it but Day2 of the NFL draft is a pretty good comp. So I guess I was too quick to say it should be nothing like the NFL draft…it should just be nothing like Day 1 and a lot like Day 2

posey

Bryan Smith (11:37:58 AM PT): Before the Giants pick, let me say that I think Justin Smoak is a better fit for this organization than Posey. Steven alluded to it a bit earlier—they need absolute impact bats. I like Buster Posey a ton, and I think he’s a sure-fire Major Leaguer. But absolute best case scenario is probably late 90s Jason Kendall, and we’ve all seen the other comparisons thrown around. Smoak has the potential to lead the Major Leagues in home runs and win Gold Gloves. Position scarcity shouldn’t concern a Giants team that is weak at every position offensively.

Kevin Goldstein (11:40:10 AM PT): Lemme say I think Bryan is WAY low on Posey. Best case scenario is .290/.360/.475 catcher with Gold Glove defense. WAY better than Kendall.

he is very good

Top 5 in the Minors right now, without a doubt

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

well yea hes really good

but is he as good as any SP in the minors? i just dont think so.

is he a top 10 guy? probably.

but is he better than kershaw? not a chance.

He debuted

THREE levels higher than guys like Main and Beavan.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 5, 2008 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

One level

for Beaven.

He plays at one level higher than those guys.

What’s your point?

no

his first game was at class A

end of story.

Yeah, sorry on Beavan

But the jump between starting at Low A and High A is huge for a HS guy. I can’t understand how some people don’t recognize that.

to me its not like justin upton

Except that he does

have the makings of three plus pitches. He just can’t command all of them.

by jparks77 on Jun 5, 2008 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

but are you telling me that there isn’t a pitcher in the minors who has 3 plus pitches right now?

by Gdawg on Jun 5, 2008 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

if he is supposed to be the best pitcher in the minors right now, I would think that there wouldn’t be anyone in the minors right now who already has developed the pitches unlike Porcello who is supposed to be able to have 3 plus pitches.

by Gdawg on Jun 5, 2008 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Porcello

is a legit top 5 pitching prospect in the minors right now. He has the makings of the three plus pitches at the major league level that he struggles to command with consistency.

He’s 19 and in A+. My argument is not based on his overall statistical achievement compared to other pitchers.

by jparks77 on Jun 5, 2008 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

he also

got 50 billion dollars and a Major League contract, he should be debuting in the Majors, not just a level above Beaven.

by Gdawg on Jun 5, 2008 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions

He made his debut in High A

What do you expect him to do when he skipped short season ball and Low A? The Ks will come.

by uthornfan on Jun 5, 2008 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

if hes as good as any pitcher in the minors

the k’s should be there now.
