update on scheppers

Will Carroll (11:57:25 AM PT): Hey, look, I can apparently post here. Lots of interesting rumors flying later in the draft but right now the most interesting to me is all the talk around Scheppers.

Kevin Goldstein (11:58:15 AM PT): Will, The Scheppers thing is weird—could go as high as to Seattle at 20, could be out of the first three rounds.

Will Carroll (12:02:45 PM PT): To bring people up to speed, Scheppers medicals have been cleared for Seattle to take him. That’s confirmed with multiple sources. Whether they will or not remains to be seen. I’ve talked to several people with picks behind and ahead of SEA and NO ONE is even looking at him. One said “My doctor would kill me if we even mentioned this guy.” There’s lots of Tim Stauffer and Rice pitcher comps being thrown around, though I don’t know much about Scheppers as a pitcher.

Will Carroll (12:05:44 PM PT): Nats pass on Smoak too? KG, is there any makeup issue here? Demands? Something in the scouting report or is he just Rick Porcello?

Kevin Goldstein (12:07:43 PM PT): It’s a mystery Will. He doesn’t want a ton of money, there are no makeup issues. He just seems to be everyone’s plan B and they’re getting their Plan A guys. Reds seem to be the only team that had Alonso ahead of him.

smoak

Kevin Goldstein (11:04:57 AM PT): Who’s Cook—Is there a new guy? I think a lot of that is going to depend on who goes where and what kind of paths players have. I think Smoak is a total monster and he could cruise through the minors.

Kevin Goldstein (11:13:04 AM PT): Nick Schaefer (London): How does one decide between Smoak and Alonso if given the choice?

Smoak has numerous advantages—switch-hitter, far superiour defensive player, doesn’t have issues vs. LHP.

Bryan Smith (11:37:58 AM PT): Before the Giants pick, let me say that I think Justin Smoak is a better fit for this organization than Posey. Steven alluded to it a bit earlier—they need absolute impact bats. I like Buster Posey a ton, and I think he’s a sure-fire Major Leaguer. But absolute best case scenario is probably late 90s Jason Kendall, and we’ve all seen the other comparisons thrown around. Smoak has the potential to lead the Major Leagues in home runs and win Gold Gloves. Position scarcity shouldn’t concern a Giants team that is weak at every position offensively.

Kevin Goldstein (11:57:32 AM PT): I like Alonso a lot, but no way, no way at ALL he should go over Smoak. I don’t get that at all. Somebody is going to get a steal with Smoak. By the way, Steve Phillips is TOTALLY right here, sign out of high school kids. Way better for your career.

Kevin Goldstein (12:05:09 PM PT): Washington takes Crow, and they’ll pay the frieght, and that’s a GREAT pick at 9. Not as great as whoever takes Smoak, but I GUARANTEE that the A’s are holding their breath right now, hoping that Houston and Texas find a way to screw this up.

Joe Sheehan (12:10:37 PM PT): Jason Castro over Smoak? Over Friedrich? KG, is this just being conservative?

Will Carroll (12:10:38 PM PT): Didn’t the Astros take a catcher not long ago in the first? Does picking someone at the same position in the next year or so send a message of “bust?” (Aside from pitcher, of course.)

Steven Goldman (12:10:49 PM PT): Correction… The Astros did that vis a vis Towles, not that Towles has impressed anyone with this .140 batting average.

Kevin Goldstein (12:11:48 PM PT): Ok. Here’s the thing. Castro is a really nice catcher, don’t get me wrong. But that’s a late first round talent and JUSTIN SMOAK IS STILL ON THE BOARD. Maybe the Astros just didn’t notice this.

Bryan Smith (12:11:51 PM PT): Castro hit .167/.287/.225 as a sophomore at Stanford, and he was pretty much forgotten about. But again, for the fifth time in ten picks, you have a guy that got noticed in the Cape Cod League and followed it up with a great spring. For the record, he threw out 28 of 69 this year for a 40% success rate, so that’s pretty good. He should hit for some average, some power, and I doubt he’ll walk very much. A weird pick.

Kevin Goldstein (12:13:51 PM PT): Andy (TX): OH my GOD!! Castro??? What the is Wade thinking?

I’ll let Andy speak for legions of Astros fans.

This is the best pick in the draft so far. Smoak is the third-best player on my board. He’s a switch-hitting Adrian Gonzalez with more power. In the Rangers’ ballpark, he has a good chance to hit 40 home runs, if he develops. There are no major holes in his game. I saw this scenario possibly unfolding last night. KLaw Says
This is the riskiest pick so far. He can’t play anywhere but second base in the infield, so he has to hit well enough to be a major league regular. He’s a plus runner; he needs to be more contact-oriented with wood. With metal, he’s too pull-oriented, and he’ll have to adjust that. He has a better chance to be a plus defender at second base than his brother, Rickie Weeks.

BA's scouting report on smoak by way of scott lewis

Here’s a scouting report from Baseball America, which ranked Smoak the 8th best talent in the draft:

"A switch-hitting first baseman with power, Smoak draws natural comparisons to Mark Teixiera. Drafted out of high school in the 16th round by the Athletics, he has started every game for South Carolina since arriving on the Columbia campus, doing nothing but produce. After batting .303 with 17 home runs, Smoak earned Freshman All-America honors. He followed that with a .315 batting average and 22 home runs in his sophomore year—enough to be tabbed as a third team All-American. He also competed for Team USA last summer.

"As a first baseman, Smoak has Gold Glove-caliber actions and soft hands. His footwork and instincts around the bag are advanced and his arm strength is adequate. As a hitter, he is consistent from both sides of the plate, and he has superior pitch recognition. A power threat against any pitch, Smoak has the ability to hit to all fields. Smoak proved his power translates to wood when he hit 11 home runs in 39 games while playing in the Cape Cod League following his freshman year, though he struggled with Team USA last summer. He is thought to be the best combination of offense and defense at first base in this draft class."

I am not the only one to question the pick

Kevin Goldstein (1:31:21 PM PT): 25. Rockies – Christian Freidrich, lhp, EKU

Friedrich finally finds a home. So one of our more MLB experts help me. Curveball guy in Coors—is that good or bad?

Poor Jeff

First Round: Joshua Fields, RHRP, U Georgia

Fields is a reliever who’s walked 42 batters in 70 innings these last two years. He throws hard, with a fastball in the mid-90s and a sharp curve, and he’s proven difficult for righties to hit, but he has trouble against lefties and did I mention that he’s a reliever? Because if there’s one thing this team needs more of, it’s right-handed relief pitchers with hard fastballs and iffy control. Also, at an alleged 6’, he’s one inch taller than Tim Lincecum, who I guess was too little for our likings.

Dumb. Dumb dumb dumb. Taking relievers in the first round is dumb. This is the worst season ever.

Congratulation Christian Friedrich!

Your career is officially fucked!

by cmkelly29 on Jun 5, 2008 3:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

My guess

Melville to the D-Backs
Gillespie to the Twins
Cole to the Yankees

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 3:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

sssh!

that would be easily the worst case scenario. if cole gets past the yankees he has a good chance to be there in round 2

by rchawk12 on Jun 5, 2008 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its going to annoy me

seeing Cole with the Yankees. Not taht I wanted us to draft him, but he’s going to do well, and everyone is going to talk about how we should have drafted him (like Philip Hughes)

Oh, I'm happy with Smoak

I’d just prefer that some other team get Cole. Because i can foresee him working otu for the Yankees, and that will annoy me.

i dont remember much of hughes coming out

but i feel confident in saying that they probably didnt fall (if hughes fell at all) for the same reason

yankees

i think they have a lot of bargaining power with a guy like cole, i mean what 18yr old wouldnt lower their demands to play for the yankees? that and the mlb wants the yankees to get whatever they want

worth popping in the 2nd

after that and even there he is a pretty big signability concern. doubt he falls to 57 though

Wondered if thats who it was

Not like “Schlereth” is too common…

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

are they still using the entire 5 minutes for every pick?

Firebat,

I think it was you who did the mock where lance lynn was there in the third, which was literally insane, my question is if he is there and some if not all of the big name hs arms are off the board, would you take him in the 2nd?

by rchawk12 on Jun 5, 2008 3:37 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yes

absolutely. I probably would have taken him before Krischneick, but he was somehow crossed off of my list.

My original plan would have been Lynn in the 2nd, Miley in the 3rd.

Twins didn't take Gillaspie.

Strange draft on the back 15.

by rooster on Jun 5, 2008 3:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What are they thinking?

They have needed a 3B forever.

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sickels had Odorizzi with that pick in his shadow draft.

He also had Lawrie with their first pick.

I like Hicks better than Lowrie, but I’d go with Sickels on the second pick.

by rooster on Jun 5, 2008 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

I just realized they have teh 1st pick in the supplemental round. If the Sox pass on gilesppie, they’ll have their cake and eat it too

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Miami coach has said that Goots could just as easily be their #1 starter as a closer.

He throws 88-91 and doesn’t walk many.

Sounds like a Twins pitcher to me.

by rooster on Jun 5, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

who?

ive been doing a lot of work researching the draft and I havent even heard of him… apparently callis agrees

by rchawk12 on Jun 5, 2008 3:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He had some buzz

as a late 2nd rounder.

The Twins always seem to take guys that are reaches (Matt Garza, Ben Revere) that work out well. They’re probably my favorite player-development team,

I always confuse gillaspie

with brewers prospect cole gillespie. I might have the spelling wrong on one or both, but I think one is conor and the other is cole. What is the reports on him, cause I havent heard many positives, although a lot of decent reviews

by rchawk12 on Jun 5, 2008 3:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

good, line-drive bat

decent defense, not great. Good eye at the plate. Better speed than Reese Havens, better power.

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol

yet havens goes what at least a dozen picks before him? interesting on the speed, I kind of envisioned a steve buechele type when I thought of him. Thats whats funny about the baseball draft, some many different opinions

by rchawk12 on Jun 5, 2008 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Havens

more of a sure thing, I guess. havens can also be an excellent 3B or 2B.

Paul DePodesta

on the Padre’s Pick

As I wrote the other day, this isn’t a need-based pick. Allan is a San Diego native from Rancho Bernardo HS who has been an All-American at Wake Forest. He’s 6’5”, almost 250 lbs and has monster power. Most importantly, he has skills to go along with that raw power.

Allan has had an unbelievably consistent collegiate career, as he’s hit at least 15 homers while also drawing at least 50 walks in each of his three seasons – something nobody else in this draft has done. Allan also produced in the Cape Cod League batting over .300 with walks and power, so he has also proven his skills with a wood bat. In short, his track record is impeccable.

Given his size, power, and patience, comparisions have been drawn to Jim Thome.
