Shooter Hunt
I’m going to think that this was really the Twins 2nd pick and Guittierez was their 3rd pick. Makes more sense to me that way
Hunt just went to the Twins with pick 31
I wouldn’t have wanted him at 11, but at 31 he is a great pick.
Hunt
After Cole got taken I was really hoping Hunt would fall. Ohh well, can anyone tell me about Melville?
This is the Texas Rangers, professional destroyers of hope, we're talking about. - BAC
Was considered the top prep arm at the beginning of the year.
Said he won’t sign if he isn’t picked in the 10-15 range.
Well
I think he said “unless he was treated like a 10-15 pick”, meaning “show me the stinking money, bitches”.
The 40 trumps all!!!
Lynn
weatherford
and price
3 guys who i’d like if they are there (other than mellville and gillespie)
"When we're mad we'll use our words. Then the rest of the world will play nice with us. And the only boom-booms will be in our pants." - Ralph Wiggum
be wary of the rice pitcher
but i agree on all the others, they would be great picks in round 2, however its tough to put a list of hopeful picks when there are 20 plus picks left
Well, the picks
are definitely coming faster now.
...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.
Does Scheppers make it to us at 57?
If he does I’d be ESTATIC
do you let him fall that far?
I didn’t think the injury was that serious
It's possible
The only team that’s supposedly cleared him health-wise is Seattle. Aforementioned health concerns, however would lead me to believe that the Rangers would also pass.
Just got in
Ecstatic to see we got Smoak. What a steal! Anybody want to clue me in where Cole went?
Not the only black poster on LSB.
the funny thing...
Buster Posey from FSU, and Conor Gillaspie from Wichita Stae
They’re playing against each other in the Tallahassee Super Regional of the CWS…
I would venture a guess that SF will have some people from their organization in Tally this weekend.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
So who are the high $$ demand guys
that are sliding??
I’m not plugged into contract demands enough to know.
Guys who are unsignable
Alex Meyer, RHP, HS
Sonny Gray, RHP, HS
Guys who are sliding
Tim Melville, RHP, HS
Kyle Lobstein, LHP, HS
Damn
devall to the braves, of course. Now you know he is going to be good. My two favorite hs pitchers went to the dodgers and braves = future all stars
Devall was gonna be good no matter what
I’m just glad the Red Sox/NY teams didn’t get him.
The 40 trumps all!!!
KG really ripping Astros today
Kevin Goldstein (2:26:17 PM PT): 38. Astros—Jordan Lyles, rhp, Hartsville HS
Yet another guy who few others had this high. Boy oh boy.
39. Cardinals—Lance Lynn, rhp, UMiss
He sure is huge! Joking aside, could be a solid innings eater
40. Braves—Brett DeVall, lhp, Niceville HS
So much better than Lyles that it’s not even funny.
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
funny
Smoak isn’t even listed on Adam’s draft poll on the front page.

seriously?
i have to leave in 45 minutes and my am radio is screwy. thats just great, i thought i would get to see the 2nd round pick for sure
so in 4 hours and 15 minutes
there will have been essentially one round. my god. its worse than the nfl draft.
Bring up Justin Smoak
So the second round isn't being televised?
Does anyone have a link so I can listen to it? I’d appreciate it greatly.
you might as well go to mlb.com

HS Guys still kicking around:
Alex Meyer
School: Greensburg (Greensburg, Ind.)
Position: RHP
HT/WT: 6-7/200
Preseason Rank: 14
Key stats: Combined to go 9-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 2006 and ‘07, but is 7-0 with a 0.95 ERA this season
Breakdown: Meyer was one of the most boring pitchers to watch this spring – and that’s a compliment. The intimidating 6-foot-7 right-hander has the opposition wearing out a path to and from the dugout, fanning better than two batters per inning this season. Pro teams love his live fastball and above-average curveball, but they hate that he’s being advised by Scott Boras, meaning he’ll be a tough sign.
Plan B: Kentucky
Tim Melville
School: Holt (Wentzville, Mo.)
Position: RHP/3B
HT/WT: 6-5/210
Preseason Rank: 1
Key stat: Piled up 290 strikeouts in 170.1 career innings pitched
Breakdown: Rated the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2008 by RISE for much of the year, Melville dropped a tad this spring because of some early-season inconsistency. He seemed to find his stride again late this spring and remains the best high school pitcher available, ever so slightly ahead of the trio of players that follow him on this list. Melville dominated the summer circuit in 2007, winning the Jackie Robinson Award and Best Pitching Prospect award at the Aflac All-American Game. With a durable frame and a potentially devastating fastball-curveball combo, Melville will be a steal as a mid-first-round pick.
Plan B: North Carolina

as well. Went as far as asking all teams to not draft him. I would stay away
2nd round and beyond list
Melville
Robbie Ross
Zach Stewart
Keischnick
Weatherford
The other Zach
Tim Murphy
Danks
This Danks OF'er
Is he actually related to John Danks? I know German Duran’s little bro is in the draft this year…

2nd round
I wouldn’t mind grabbing 3B James Darnell out of South Carolina. The way this draft is playing out, there should still be some nice high ceiling pitchers available in the 3rd. Or at least someone like Tim Murphy.
Not quick enough
He’s got a good arm, I can see him in RF, but I don’t think he has good enough feet for the IF
Better hitter than Keishnick, then?
Well, maybe a more consistent hitter. It appears from scout reports that Keishnick has more power.
Be prepared to offer Melville
top 15 money.
The guy i am hoping falls is Ross Seaton.

Love the TX kids.
Sample, from CO, is another big bodied prep flame thrower.
Anyone of those three would be justifiable.
He
looks to be worth the money and with only 1 first round pick this year, the Rangers should have no problem spending that extra cash.

BA has him at 97
and Saberscouting has him at 79. If we can get him in the 4th, I would be pleased. It may just be one pitch, but apparently it is the best pitch in the country. Also, with his three pitches and avg velocity, he could/should be tried as a starter.
Is he a junior or a senior?
If he’s a junior he goes back for his final year and gets top 5 money then
Junior
Seniors get very little money, comparatively. They pretty much all sign for slot, cause there’s not much else they can do
If they don't sign
How long do they have to wait before being eligible to be signed by a team, like if they were to go play in an independent league.
They go through the draft again, no?
Isn’t that what Scherzer was facing a year ago when he didn’t sign with Arizona until the last possible minute?
yes
but with the way hitters are going, he probably won’t last long. plus: Pepperdine is one of the most pitcher friendly parks in college baseball. Minus: he had never put up numbers like that before this year.
Thanks
I would bet on that bat. Smoak and Thames would make me a very happy Ranger fan.
--Brian
The fans might ask
how a team this starved for pitching can justify taking bats in the top two rounds, but you are right, that would not be a bad haul.
+1
just thinking the same thing
To be fair... You are a fan of School of Rock so your ability to judge anything is VASTLY overrated!!!!

Same
I really wanted him in the first round prior to the injury. I think he’s just too good to pass on in the second though…even with the injury. Getting a high ceiling college arm to go along with our high ceiling college bat would be amazing.

i endorse this strategy
some 18 year old high schooler could just as easily get injured in 3 years. ill take the guy who at least made it to that age as a top prospect before getting injured.
worth the risk.
Bring up Justin Smoak
well maybe not
there are some better names left then i thought.
in the 3rd though.. if hes still there i couldnt resist.
Bring up Justin Smoak
Jordan Swagerty
Seen him a couple of times at Prestonwood Christian in Plano
Firebat, you have prob done the most research…will he be there in the 3rd?
some guys to key in on in round 2
melville-pay him, he will be worth it
daniel webb hs rhp
aaron weatherford rhp miss. st
robbie ross hs lhp
kyle lobstein hs lhp
adrien nieto hs c, hosmer’s teammate
isaac galloway hs of, projected top hs this time last year
tim murphy lhp ucla
all great selections imo
Who would you prefer....
Weatherford, flame-thrower with health issues
Carpenter, flame-thrower with inconsistent performance
weatherford
although i would prefer melville, ross, lobstein, and murphy before him and galloway as well
Only Melville
and Robbie Ross are ranked higher than Weatherford among available players at Saberscouting.
yea same on keith laws rankings, however
i am a sucker for lhp high schoolers (ross, lobstein) and murphy struggled a bit this year and been banged up but has great stuff and would present very good value imo. Im also very high, higher than most on galloway a very toolsy outfielder.
that being said weatherford would be a very fine pick in the 2nd.

The picks come so rapid fire after the first round I think they want to give teams time to prepare.
Either that or they’re just all lazy crumb bums.

melville prediction
Kevin Goldstein (2:56:53 PM PT): Two things real quick.
2. My new crazy prediction. Angels get Melville with their first pick (No. 74 overall) and turn that selection into a first-round pick.
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
hell no
they tried it with matt harvey last year and luckily it didnt work, however they stole walden a couple years back and got him as a draft and follow two years ago and got a great pitching prospect right out of our back yard.
any1 have a draft tracker or sum link?

they broke for dinner guys… 2nd round starts at 5:15 CST
Who would be upset with Scheppers at 57?
Anyone blow a gasket if that happens.
I’m in the camp that we take him if he’s still there!
yes
JD has a history of bringing in pitchers with injury problems (not including McCarthy, just to head that off) and the second round is not a place to gamble, esp with our stellar success rate there of late.
id prefer melville or seaton just from sifting through the HS kids
i really want the top HS prep arm in the draft thats left. it keeps us in line with our procession of HS pitchers we have drafted early the last few seasons.

Smoak love
Kevin Goldstein (3:07:10 PM PT): Blake (Arlington): Kevin, bigger steal: Smoak at 10 or Friedrich at 25?
Smoak is the steal of this draft as far as I’m concerned.
Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY
Friedrich's a good steal
but Smoak has a superstar ceiling and was drafted when everyone thought the Rangers would be stuck with a mid rotation SP at best
HUGE OT:
But, I was offered CC Sabathia, Nick Blackburn, Manny Parra, and Jose Castillo for Aramiz Ramirez in a 20 team dynasty league and have no idea on this one. I have Kouzmanoff at third so I already have a third baseman
Take it. Don't even think twice.
But, I’ve never played a dynasty league, so I don’t know how they tally points.
Do you lose Sabathia
after the season? Still, Parra and Blackburn will put up solid numbers the rest of the year, and Sabathia is going to come around. I like it.
Take it
Slow start aside, CC is a beast, and will be for a long time.
The other guys are pretty much filler, but a 20 team league is pretty damn deep (depending on your rosters), so if you need innings Blackburn is a nice eater who won’t kill your ratios for a while until the league catches up to him.
The 40 trumps all!!!
Robbie Ross
sounds a little like Kiker. Shorter lefty, can hit mid 90’s with FB, solid with command and secondary pitches. There are a lot of arms still there, we should be able to land a good one.
+1
on ross
-1 for gdawg, sorry i hit the wrong reply button and it appeared in the wrong spot
Yeah, I assumed as much
Sorry about that, but I couldn’t make up my mind and since there was at least a break in the draft and the draft thread, I thought it was as good a time as any.

The best writer in all of baseball
I’m glad he’s finally found a sports network that’s as on the ball as he is.
I loved the Hambone article he wrote where the crux of his argument was to note just how far Josh Hamilton was behind Alex Rodriguez in terms of career numbers when they had been #1 overall picks in back-to-back years.
The 40 trumps all!!!
Or this gem
about Colt Griffin, that actually went to press:
“Kansas City gladly scooped up Griffin with the ninth pick of the draft, bypassing Barry Zito and Ben Sheets. The Royals gave Griffin a $2.4 million signing bonus and waited for great things to happen.”
How the f&&& does that make into print for a national level publication like the DMN? Do they not have fact checkers?
Fraley was the most infuriating baseball writer in the history of baseball writers.
He’s the Million Dollar Baby of baseball writers, and I really mean that.

i saw that article and loved how it had no mention of our monster draft last year. forget about who we got, the sheer volume of picks and the overhaul it enabled our farm system to go under was worth a sidebar mention. Then again what else would you expect from the craptastic hater that is gerry fraley
Man this needs to start back up
I am gonna be really late, but i refuse to leave before they pick again
I predict Galloway
rips JD tomorrow for picking a firstbaseman and not a pitcher.

Gose to the Phills
Man, they just love them some big bags of raw toolage, don’t they?

That's been their recent philophy
Golson, Savery, and Mattair.
Even trading for CJ Henry, who’s the biggest bag of raw tools/no baseball acumen ever.
I’m glad we’re not going the “draft the best atheltes and hope they turn into baseball players” route, I’ll say that.
The 40 trumps all!!!
plenty of 1st round talent left
but i have to admit i dont have as good a feeling as i did in the first round. Gut says they dont take melville, he is falling for a reason, must have a pretty high price tag.
im not sure we can meet that then
that is a very high price tag, more than beaven and main got last year
Cutter Dykstra
Sweet name, awesome pedigree.
Wouldn’t have minded him here, would’ve loved him in the third or fourth.
The 40 trumps all!!!
I'm back
Trusting you guys from this point, I don’t recognize many of the names left.
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
i cant blame the rangers if they pass on melville
but if they do take him and pay him… could you ask for more talent out #11 and #57?
Bring up Justin Smoak
I have followed this draft pretty close
but i just don’t know the kids the astros are picking. it is insane.
lol
did they take that guy cause his name is austin?
here
47. Robbie Ross, Nicholaville (KY) Lexington Christian Academy, HS Senior, LHP, 5-11, 180 lbs.
Ross may not have the size or electric fastball as other top LHP prospects, but he gets the job done with a plus fastball and competitiveness on the mound.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
The rundown
Robert Ross
Summary: Ross is a very intriguing high school lefty who is considered to be one of the better prep southpaws in the Draft class. With a fastball that’s plus at times, the possibility of two decent secondary offerings, good command and outstanding competitiveness, he’s the type of pitcher who always gets more out of his stuff than others might. He may not have a ton of projection, but he’s already pretty good.
ok... now let's get him signed
i can live with that for sure
Ross
Above average to plus FB, 90-92. Makings of a good slider, and an average change. Good movement, good control. Excellent competitor, great athlete. All of this from the MLB scouting report.
Not knowing the Melville situation...
I am ok with Ross. You can never have enough talented left-handed pitchers in the minors.
Ha ha on the Astros
Kevin Goldstein (3:37:33 PM PT): If you are looking to keep hating on Astros, one insider callled Joe Austin’s scouting bureau video the funniest things he’s ever seen and called it a 20 bat.
The 40 trumps all!!!
Anyone else catch this?

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
Yeah
That nick is a no brainer
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
JD likes little dudes and catchers
now if there was only a 5’8” catcher, JD would take him up in a jiffy
Fastball: Ross’s fastball is plus at times. He touches 92 mph and pitches comfortably at 90.
Fastball movement: Like most lefties, he does have good life on his fastball.
Slider: It’s a quick little slider. It’s just OK and needs some work.
Changeup: It grades out as close to average.
Control: He can throw all of his pitches for strikes pretty well.
Poise: He is an excellent competitor and gets the most out of his stuff.
Physical Description: Ross is a compact, athletic lefty with a quick arm.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Above-average to plus fastball from left side; competitive nature, excellent athlete.
Weaknesses: His secondary stuff is a little behind the fastball, but it should eventually be average.

A little cool water on Robbie?
From Keith Law’s notes on June 1:
Robbie Ross is asking for a signing bonus of $1.575 million, or mid-first round money, to buy him away from Kentucky. He’s not projected as a first rounder, making it likely he’ll go to school.
eh
I’m not too worried about buying him out of Kentucky. A UNC or Miami committment, maybe he stays. You don’t go to UK to move to the first round.
isnt that about what melville woulda cost?

I’ll worry about that when we get close to August 15. Like we said with Lemon, it would be pretty dumb for them to pick him if they weren’t prepared to make a good run, as the guys above said. Law has a way of being douchy about thesse sorts of statements and conclusions.

Just got this from my Scott Lucas e-mail
"Scouts eagerly anticipated his late-April matchup with fellow
Lexington southpaw Nick Maronde, and Ross didn’t disappoint. He struck out 14
and walked none, giving up just an unearned run while dealing Maronde
the second loss of his prep career. He also outdueled Niceville (Fla.)
lefty Brett DeVall earlier in the year, ending the game with a 94-mph
fastball for a strikeout. A Kentucky recruit, Ross should be signable in
the first two rounds."

Keith Law on Ross
Law…”Ross is a different animal. He’s under six feet and doesn’t offer much projection, but sits at a very consistent 90-91 and can throw a little harder when he needs to—but more on that in a moment. His best offspeed pitch is his slider, which flashed plus at 84 with a very sharp tilt but was inconsistent. He shows a solid changeup with some fading action, but prefers to throw his slider as his put-away pitch to right-handed batters. He has a very quick arm and separates his hands nice and high, shortening the path his arm has to travel from the glove to his release point. He could stay over the rubber a little longer, but his stride is long and he keeps his upper body steady until the very end, when his head snaps a little at the moment he releases the ball.”

i dont know
just saw people posting about it on another board. too close to the rangerse pick to acatually read about it =)
Bring up Justin Smoak
Sample is about as raw as you can get, too
But he’s huge and very projectable. Good gamble this late.
The 40 trumps all!!!
round 3
Could we get Robbie Ross AND Ross Seaton? I definitely wouldn’t mind that. Kieschnick or Galloway would be cool too.
Kevin Goldstein (4:00:20 PM PT): Matt (Oakland, CA): What can you tell me about Ross’ mechanical issues (or lack of polish)? He’s just more of a thrower than a pitcher. It’s not very smooth, and his command comes and goes, but you can’t teach height and velocity.

Wow
Lag, much? When I hit post there were no replies. Now I look like a dog-piling douche.
No wonder CI beats me week after week.

are you watching the
mlb.com draft tracker?
its posting the picks way before the mlb.tv feed
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
Good thing we can trade some vets for these Giants picks in a few years
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
oops
this was supposed to be a reply to shep.

Question - no schtick
Why do the Red Sox get an early 3rd round pick? They’ve been picking last every round.

Goldstein
Kevin Goldstein (3:37:33 PM PT): If you are looking to keep hating on Astros, one insider callled Joe Austin’s scouting bureau video the funniest things he’s ever seen and called it a 20 bat.
Is there a team having a worse draft than Houston?
maybe those players won't want to play
for a team dumb enough to draft them when they did.
"that suzuki guy should go back to making cars" - My girlfriend after C.J.'s close in game 2
same story
just a different year. When was the last time Houston had a good draft? They’ve been giving up top picks for years and have done nothing with the few picks they have had
Timother Murphy
Tommy Hunter, I like the sound of those 2 players pitching back-back days for the Rangers.
It's making fun of the draft report on MLB.com
Saids his mechanics has a “stab in the back”
Zach Putnam
I can’t believe he’s still not taken yet. This guy might have been the best pitcher in the big 10
so he's really good
good, sinking fastball. Good splitter. Decent secondary stuff.
He should probably be a 1st supplemental guy
there were some desire questions
because he only wanted to DH at the cape. character questions always kill.
my comment was more
about the quality of Big 10 baseball. Being the best pitcher there really isn’t meaningful.
Gritty competitors?
both ross and murphy seem to have that intangible that steve phillips likes…
just sayin

Murphy
just based on the mlb.com draft tracker. He’s a bigger guy than Ross, and the only thing that seems to be a downside is some mechanical issues. 4 pitches, and knows how to use them. I love the depth we’re adding to the system.

adding 2 decent highly thought of lefties isnt terrible either.

I'll root for a homer pick next round
Scott Gorgen, RHP UC Irvine
Rivals has him ranked as the #2 college pitcher, unfortunately he’s a small guy and doesn’t have a major league body.
Scott Green
that’s three college relievers drafted by the Tigers.
You think they’re sending a message to their pen?
expensive message
It’d be cheaper to just give away free bullpen tickets to fans with “You Suck” signs.
Considering the number of you suck signs
at Tigers games, maybe they thought their message was not getting through?
i am definitely not saying
I like their draft so far. but i do like that pick. taking college guys out of need works…like never.
I think that makes sense for San Diego
They think, probably correctly, that anyone can pitch in their ballpark. The challeng is finding someone who can hit better than .250/.300/.320
