Shooter Hunt

I’m going to think that this was really the Twins 2nd pick and Guittierez was their 3rd pick. Makes more sense to me that way

by JBImaknee on Jun 5, 2008 4:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hunt just went to the Twins with pick 31

I wouldn’t have wanted him at 11, but at 31 he is a great pick.

After Cole got taken I was really hoping Hunt would fall. Ohh well, can anyone tell me about Melville?

It's possible

The only team that’s supposedly cleared him health-wise is Seattle. Aforementioned health concerns, however would lead me to believe that the Rangers would also pass.

KG really ripping Astros today

Kevin Goldstein (2:26:17 PM PT): 38. Astros—Jordan Lyles, rhp, Hartsville HS

Yet another guy who few others had this high. Boy oh boy.

39. Cardinals—Lance Lynn, rhp, UMiss

40. Braves—Brett DeVall, lhp, Niceville HS

So much better than Lyles that it’s not even funny.

HS Guys still kicking around:
Alex Meyer
School: Greensburg (Greensburg, Ind.)
Position: RHP
HT/WT: 6-7/200
Preseason Rank: 14
Key stats: Combined to go 9-6 with a 2.62 ERA in 2006 and ‘07, but is 7-0 with a 0.95 ERA this season
Breakdown: Meyer was one of the most boring pitchers to watch this spring – and that’s a compliment. The intimidating 6-foot-7 right-hander has the opposition wearing out a path to and from the dugout, fanning better than two batters per inning this season. Pro teams love his live fastball and above-average curveball, but they hate that he’s being advised by Scott Boras, meaning he’ll be a tough sign.
Plan B: Kentucky
Tim Melville
School: Holt (Wentzville, Mo.)
Position: RHP/3B
HT/WT: 6-5/210
Preseason Rank: 1
Key stat: Piled up 290 strikeouts in 170.1 career innings pitched
Breakdown: Rated the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2008 by RISE for much of the year, Melville dropped a tad this spring because of some early-season inconsistency. He seemed to find his stride again late this spring and remains the best high school pitcher available, ever so slightly ahead of the trio of players that follow him on this list. Melville dominated the summer circuit in 2007, winning the Jackie Robinson Award and Best Pitching Prospect award at the Aflac All-American Game. With a durable frame and a potentially devastating fastball-curveball combo, Melville will be a steal as a mid-first-round pick.
Plan B: North Carolina

and Saberscouting has him at 79. If we can get him in the 4th, I would be pleased. It may just be one pitch, but apparently it is the best pitch in the country. Also, with his three pitches and avg velocity, he could/should be tried as a starter.

Who would be upset with Scheppers at 57?

Anyone blow a gasket if that happens.

I’m in the camp that we take him if he’s still there!

by bstair on Jun 5, 2008 5:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think he goes

until the third, at the earliest

by clark on Jun 5, 2008 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes

JD has a history of bringing in pitchers with injury problems (not including McCarthy, just to head that off) and the second round is not a place to gamble, esp with our stellar success rate there of late.

by clark on Jun 5, 2008 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

id prefer melville or seaton just from sifting through the HS kids

i really want the top HS prep arm in the draft thats left. it keeps us in line with our procession of HS pitchers we have drafted early the last few seasons.

Smoak love

Kevin Goldstein (3:07:10 PM PT): Blake (Arlington): Kevin, bigger steal: Smoak at 10 or Friedrich at 25?

Smoak is the steal of this draft as far as I’m concerned.

Brandon Boggs 2008 Texas Rangers ROY

by RangerMad on Jun 5, 2008 5:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Friedrich's a good steal

but Smoak has a superstar ceiling and was drafted when everyone thought the Rangers would be stuck with a mid rotation SP at best

by Gdawg on Jun 5, 2008 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

HUGE OT:

But, I was offered CC Sabathia, Nick Blackburn, Manny Parra, and Jose Castillo for Aramiz Ramirez in a 20 team dynasty league and have no idea on this one. I have Kouzmanoff at third so I already have a third baseman

by Gdawg on Jun 5, 2008 5:14 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Take it. Don't even think twice.

But, I’ve never played a dynasty league, so I don’t know how they tally points.

by rooster on Jun 5, 2008 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

you

just keep all your players each year instead of redrafting

by Gdawg on Jun 5, 2008 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do you lose Sabathia

after the season? Still, Parra and Blackburn will put up solid numbers the rest of the year, and Sabathia is going to come around. I like it.

by clark on Jun 5, 2008 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Take it

Slow start aside, CC is a beast, and will be for a long time.

The other guys are pretty much filler, but a 20 team league is pretty damn deep (depending on your rosters), so if you need innings Blackburn is a nice eater who won’t kill your ratios for a while until the league catches up to him.

I still think Parra

can get his footing and become a dominant LHP in the NL.

Robbie Ross

sounds a little like Kiker. Shorter lefty, can hit mid 90’s with FB, solid with command and secondary pitches. There are a lot of arms still there, we should be able to land a good one.

The best writer in all of baseball

I’m glad he’s finally found a sports network that’s as on the ball as he is.

I loved the Hambone article he wrote where the crux of his argument was to note just how far Josh Hamilton was behind Alex Rodriguez in terms of career numbers when they had been #1 overall picks in back-to-back years.

The 40 trumps all!!!

by thedirkatron on Jun 5, 2008 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or this gem

about Colt Griffin, that actually went to press:

“Kansas City gladly scooped up Griffin with the ninth pick of the draft, bypassing Barry Zito and Ben Sheets. The Royals gave Griffin a $2.4 million signing bonus and waited for great things to happen.”

How the f&&& does that make into print for a national level publication like the DMN? Do they not have fact checkers?

Fraley was the most infuriating baseball writer in the history of baseball writers.

He’s the Million Dollar Baby of baseball writers, and I really mean that.

The 40 trumps all!!!

i saw that article and loved how it had no mention of our monster draft last year. forget about who we got, the sheer volume of picks and the overhaul it enabled our farm system to go under was worth a sidebar mention. Trusting you guys from this point, I don’t recognize many of the names left.

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.

The rundown

Robert Ross

Summary: Ross is a very intriguing high school lefty who is considered to be one of the better prep southpaws in the Draft class. With a fastball that’s plus at times, the possibility of two decent secondary offerings, good command and outstanding competitiveness, he’s the type of pitcher who always gets more out of his stuff than others might. He may not have a ton of projection, but he’s already pretty good.
