Wieland on BA

“The Reno area is gaining a reputation for developing pitchers, but Wieland stands out as the top righthander to come out of the area that in the last few years has produced Rays minor leaguer Jake McGee (out of high school) and Cole Rohrbough (Braves, out of Western Nevada CC). Wieland has impressed scouts with his combination of now stuff, clean arm and projectable frame. He was outstanding in all, sitting at 88-91 mph with his fastball and reminding scouts of Mark Prior with his command and has more deception in his delivery. He’s maintained that velocity this spring and reportedly has flashed better velocity, with most reports having him bumping 92 regularly. He’s shown the ability to spin a breaking ball despite Reno’s thin air and flashed a changeup. He’s signed as a two-way player to San Diego State but figures to sign if taken in the second-to-fourth round range.”

Projected #93.

by jamcadbury on Jun 5, 2008 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

scouting report

While he doesn’t belong in the discussion of elite pitchers in this Draft class, Wieland does have some pretty good pitchability. Not too many high schoolers can throw their breaking ball for strikes at will, but count Wieland among the few. With the ability to command his fastball and a feel for a change, the wiry right-hander is the kind of high schooler who could move fairly well through a system and emerge as a back-of-the-rotation type in the future

I had the opposite reaction

He sounds really promising to me, though he also sounds like someone who could go to school. I hope they get him signed. This looks like a antastic draft so far for the Rangers.

I'm giving JD a ton of credit for this one

Last year, people said it was only a great draft because of all the picks, but with having no extra picks this time around, he has done a great job so far.

That’s one of the reasons I can’t ever be mad at JD for a dumb move. The guy takes the blame for moves that don’t work out and always gives credit to the scouting staff for the moves that work out and is always pretty open about what went on.

see

I’m not so sure about that.

He went from high 80s his junior year to about 92 this year. 6’3”, I think there’s at least some projection left.

by FirebatM3 on Jun 5, 2008 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

And I doubt that many HS arms taken in this range who do turn out to be top guys are identified as so at the time. I like the puzzle pieces on him.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 5, 2008 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

he seems

to also be very advanced in his development for a HS. Not many HS drafted at this time have much more to offer but a fastball and maybe a decent change up or breaking ball

Weiland

HS pitcher who already has good control of a curveball and is working on his change-up already. If he can get his fastball to be a bit better, that sounds like a pretty good pick for a 4th rounder.

by Gdawg on Jun 5, 2008 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Just watched the video on Weiland

I’m a fan of his mechanics. Pretty clean. I wish he threw a little harder, but this is the 4th round. He has a nice pitcher’s frame and could conceivably add a little to his fastball and be a steal.

Loving this draft.

At the Bruce Springsteen concert last month in Charlottesville

Met Chris Long. Cool kid.

I really dislike bumrushing celebs, especially ones I am ambivalent about, but I was with my boss who is a UVA alum, and of course, a big booster (in his mind anyway), when Chris and his hott were right behind us at will call. So he’s blathering in Long’s ear, and to his credit (we were prolly the 39th group of yahoos to approachass him), he’s very very nice and gracious.

By boss’s wife gave me a reproachful mock-smack after, because I warned the hott to be on her best behavior, lest she fumble her first class ticket on the gravy train. Thing is, I wish we could have pulled Chris aside and scolded “Son, don’t be a fool! Stay single till you retire!”

I’ve never, never understood why a young pro athlete would get married. Vasectomy at 22, reverse at 38.

One other noteworthyism: I’m 6’3, 235 pounds of pure semi-out-of-shapedness. And obviously, Master Long would put me through some sheetrock, if situation be arisin. Nevertheless, he is not very big in person. Other than calves that would make Popeye cry himself to sleep on his huge pillow, he barely seemed bigger than me.

3b Chris Dominguez from Louisville is still there. I’d love to take a chance on him in the 5th. Guy will stick at 3rd and, though inconsistent, still has really good potential.

Galloway would be nice as well. Or one of those HS pitchers still floating around like Webb, Maronde, or Brett Marshall.

by naropean on Jun 5, 2008 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

Danks

heres what i read for those who wanted to know…

Danks could get interesting. The former first round pick out of Round Rock High School will likely be selected around the third round, but even that might not be enough to get the junior out of a burnt orange uniform. It’s going to take seven digits to steal Danks away from Austin, and if he sticks to his guns, not a penny less. Will he get the deal he’s looking for? It will come down to which team selects him, and if they want to pay over the slotted price. Shockingly, Danks returning to Austin is actually realistic.

from orangebloods.com

by murph22 on Jun 5, 2008 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

I can see Danks staying

Unlike most juniors, he has a legit chance to improve his status next year. Pretty much everything at UT baseball was off this year, if they come back stronger next year and Danks leads the way, he may move into the first couple of rounds.

by JBImaknee on Jun 5, 2008 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I would take this with a big grain of salt...

Jordan Danks was never a first round pick. JOHN Danks was a first round pick as some of you may know, however JORDAN had a firm commitment to UT coming out of high school and told teams he would most likely be going to school. As a result, the chicago white sox were the team that selected him… in the 19th round, lol. If someone was already questioning the validity of this website I would have to say this is little more than third-rate gossip by a wanna be blogger.

Kevin Goldstein (5:04:35 PM PT): Ben (Dallas): So besides the obvious stellar pick of Smoak at 11, how is the Rangers Draft looking so far? To me it seems that the pitcher all have clean mechanics, have atleast some projectabiliy left and do the little things. The Lefties in the 2nd and 3rd really help address the lack of orginizational depth in that department. What are you guys take?

The Smoak pick pretty much makes the draft. They could pass after that and have a good draft. I’m not a huge Ross fan, but that’s a personal bias against height, and I’ve been burned on that at times. Murphy has little ceiling, but if he’s a fifth-starter in two years I won’t be shocked. Wieland is a high school guy, but also more polish than power.

After seeing the clips from both last night and tonight Crisp ranks #2 behind sexson as the biggest punks in baseball right now. Thats was a gutless and unprovoked slide and a weak charge that almost got him knocked on his asz if he didnt hesitate. He didnt get hit that hard and not only was the pitch premeditated, which everyone had to know was coming, but he went up there with the intention of starting a brawl. Take your base and learn how to slide you pansy.

but did anyone see John Hart in the draft room sitting right next to Nolan Ryan?

The two

guys that shouldn’t be making important decisions.

Someone had to

get the sandwiches and tip the delivery boy.

...and curse Sir Walter Raleigh, he was such a stupid git.

whoever was making the decisions today

be it EGS, Nolan, or Hopkins, did a hell of a job. I cannot every remember thinking so highly of so many players taken later on the first day. I am probably as excited this year as I was last year. Of course, a lot of that just has to do with Smoak.

agreed

mark my words. This draft will be much bigger than 07.

Interesting news article

Robbie Ross’s situation was different. His bargaining price before the draft was $1.575 million.

"I was sort of shocked because I thought what I was asking for was something of an issue," he said. "I thought that might scare off a lot of teams, and I was worried I might not go until the later rounds.

"But then out of the blue, Texas took me. They kind of popped out of nowhere. I hadn’t been talking to them at all. So it was really surprising."

Ross said he will leave it up to his advisers — Dustin and Hunter Bledsoe of Allegiant Management in Tennessee — to talk with the Rangers.

"I really don’t know if they can work things out or not," Ross said. "I hope so. I guess time will tell. But I’m excited either way. If I get the money and sign or if I go play at Kentucky, I’ve got a great opportunity either way.

"I’m leaving it in God’s hands, and he’ll direct me to the right path."

Chuck Ross realized his son was "a big ticket item."

"I was hoping the Yankees or Boston would take Robbie," he said. "Now we’re hoping the Rangers want to pay what we’re asking. We’ve got a lot to work out to make a final agreement."

Scouting Report

RHP Matt Thompson, Arlington Grace Prep: He has committed to TCU, but with a 93 mph fastball along with a good changeup and slider, he might go pro.
