Second Draft Day Targets
Since JD obviously checks in here and picks guys who we highly recommend, such as smoak, ross, and tim murphy. I think we should give him a few more to key in on in either the beginning stages of the draft as he did today or to keep in mind for later rounds when guys start to get picked who slipped due to signability concerns.
Tops on my list are isaac galloway (hs of), daniel webb (hs rhp ranked higher than ross by keith law and also from kentucky), nick maronde (hs lhp), jordan danks (of, ut) and taylor hightower (hs c).
Also some guys worth taking a late risk on are hs rhps sonny gray and alex meyer. gray has a firm commitment to vandy and meyer is a big signability concern with late first round ability who may sign if given that type of money. Meyer might be worth a later round pick and try to sign him for that type of money at the risk of upsetting Bud "Sleepy" Selig.

For those who still demand relievers
Louis COleman out of LSU looks like a good one.
He’s a sidearmer, but he still throws 92-93 with a good breaking pitch. He struck out 30% of the batters faced this year.

In rounds 7-10
the Rangers historically look more within the college ranks. I found a few guys I like:
I am a big fan of relievers in this area:
Tyson Bagley Dallas Baptist Sr. Bakersfield, Calif.
Nick Cassavechia Baylor Sr. Dallas, Texas
Tyler Conn (L) Southern Miss Jr. Ocean Springs, Miss.
Tim Erickson (L) Lamar Sr. Sour Lake, Texas
Jake McCarter Oklahoma Sr. Kerrville, Texas
Tommy Rafferty Arizona State Sr. Lorena, Texas
and the aforementioned Coleman out of LSU.
Other guys:
Eric Thames…how did he not go on the first day? Not much reason to go back to school when you just hit .400 in a pitchers park
Ricardo Pecina LHP San Diego…great numbers on the year, low ERA and more than a K/inning
Cord Phelps 2B Stanford…surprising power numbers for a 2B, and from a great program
Jake Stewart LF Houston (RS Senior)...knocked in the game winning run against my Ags in a tourney game, big offensive numbers, limited D
Jack Rye RF FSU (Senior)...Not much power, but a .400 BA and solid plate discipline. might be a good pick in the teens (remember FSU has about as hitter friendly a park as there is)

Jack Rye
Another one of my noles. Good left-handed bat. He doesn’t have much range in the OF, but he could probably continue to patrol RF. To be honest with you… I don’t know exactly how much of a “hitter friendly” park Dick Howser is, it might just be more a result of the people hitting there. And there is a tall fence in RF that those left-handed bats have to compete with for the HRs.
Either way, I wouldn’t expect him to go any sooner than the 25th round or so.

Other random FSU talent
Elih Villanueva – JR / RHP – 6’2, 235 – 7-2 3.61 ERA, 92.1 IP, 91 K, 37 BB, 4 HR, .226 OBA
Ryan Strauss – SR / RHP – 6’2, 202 – 9-1 4.58 ERA, 76.2 IP, 65 K, 31 BB, 11 HR, .239 OBA
Reliever:
Jimmy Marshall – JR / RHP – 6’1, 209 – 6-2 2.98 ERA, 45.1 IP, 53 K, 30 BB, 0 HR, .221 OBA

okay... I really underestimated
Jack Rye. He was taken in the 13th by the Yankees. Bastards.

Also
Bobby Bundy, an OK kid who i thought they might target in the 4th round, is still on the board. He is a BA top 100 guy who was injured early in the year but made an impressive comeback late in the season. I would love to draft him tomorrow and offer him 3rd round money.
Also, DJ Mitchell is another highly regarded reliever from Clemson.

DJ Mitchell
I am going to go out and say I want him or Thames with our first pick tomorrow.

sorry, I take that back
I would call some of the HS players who dropped and see what the price is, then I start looking at the college kids.

Riccio Torrez
he has a glowing report on mlb.com
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/events/draft_report/y2008/index.jsp?mc=torrez
he went in the second round of the minorleagueball mock. but he is not in the BA top 200. he is an ASU commit, but we can probably offer decent money. thoughts?
by clark on Jun 5, 2008 10:48 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I like his bat
He might want to play with his brother at ASU unless he is money whipped.
His build and his line drive, compact swing seem similar, on paper and in that short video, to that of Max Ramirez.

Jordan Swagerty
He can work to 92 mph on the mound, has a really nice change for his level, and a good curve ball with good depth. He is also a 2-way guy as a Catcher and SS who has been a pretty prolific switch hitter and has good speed.
I have seen him a few times on the Dallas Tigers and for his high school (Prestonwood Christian). Definitely wouldn’t mind taking a look at him.

who is he committed to?
i thought we was considered a third round talent…it would be great to pluck an area kid like that.

hmm
http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerprofile.aspx?ID=17429
ASU commit. it sounds like he has a lot of talent, but is not really an elite catching or pitching prospect. he might want to go to college, play both ways, and continue to refine his skills.

Pretty Good Article
I don’t think he would be a hard sign. But you are right he could possibly improve his stock by going to college. However you have to think he would listen to the hometown team. He would take a while coming through the system, but IMO would be a nice pickup.
by SaltyDawg on Jun 5, 2008 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
that article implies
he might be a better C than a P, or at least present more value there. He would certainly be a great story, and maybe his old fans at Prestonwood can make the five minute drive up the tollroad to see him in Frisco someday…

I have seen him do both...
And he is a capable defensive catcher and hitter.
The thing that makes me want to look at him as a pitcher is that apparently his velocity shot to 88 mph his junior year kind of out of nowhere. Then, he packed 8-10 pounds on and jumped to 92 mph this year. He still is only 175 pounds and so there could be another velocity spike on the horizon as his body fills out. If you added that to two secondary offerings with potential in his curve and change…he could turn into a very nice prospect…and he definitely has the makeup to succeed.

Someone over at BP
said in the chat today that if you have a prospect with comparable skills as both a hitter and a pitcher that you should always start him out as a hitter since it is easier to convert to pitching at an older age (ankiel being the exception to the rule) than vice versa.
I found this odd and would have thought the opposite and after thinking about it I still do. Pitchers are more valuable and it is stupid to plain for someone to fail therefore you should have them to whatever they can to maximize their value and if you dont think they will succeed in that capacity, well then what are you doing with that player in the first place.

I suppose the rookie teams
will need catching too. Might as well have a stud at every level.

hate to break it to you
but vanderbilt is supposed to have one of the greatest recruiting classes ever. Plus it looks like the only guy they are going to lose to the draft is anthony hewitt.
ASU is going to get hit hard from the guys who are getting drafted plus a lot of their recruits are going to sign, headed by hosmer.

does anyone know when the draft starts tomorrow?
i thought I heard 10:30 central, but I want to be sure. I get the luxury off sleeping in tomorrow and dont want to blow it by waking up too early.

question:
who ARE the elite DFW-area talents this year?
Every pitch thrown to Josh Hamilton is recorded as an E1. -- clark

doesnt sound like there are too many
this seemed to be a bit of a down year for prospects not only in the area, but the state as well.

Yea the MLBtv guys made several
comments about the unusual lack of talent out of TX this year…both out of the HS and college ranks.
by SaltyDawg on Jun 6, 2008 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
There wasn't an elite HS player in the DFW area this year
The top player was the catcher from Prestonwood Christian but he wasn’t seen as more than a 3-5 round pick. Cashner was really the only highly rated player in the entire region.

If we get one
utility If, or a long reliever, or even some decent AAA fodder today it’ll be a good day. Most likely the vast majority of picks today won’t even be in our system in 2 years.

well
today we have picks from the 7th round on. I would like to think we can at least a couple of guys who can contribute down the road. but you are right, nobody should expect to read any scouting reports (if they can even be found for the players we select today) that say the player is a frontline starter in the making.
by clark on Jun 6, 2008 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the only guy
we have gotten who has been much more than that from 7 and on over the last decade is Ian Kinsler. Most of the other guys we get there who have made the majors like Travis Metcalf, Scott Feldman, Kameron Loe, etc. are more cheap filler for the team.

i really like this bianucci kid they just drafted in the 8th
just going by numbers and scouting video but his approach looks pretty good. i wonder what the knock on him is.

not so impressed by Thompson (7th round pick)
Grace Prep Academy pitcher. I guess when you’re in high school and you’re 6’3, you get some points for projectability. Just didn’t see anything good about him

12th round - Corey Young
Pitcher from Seton Hall – Lefty 6’2
His pitching motion doesn’t look so great in terms of injuries (don’t know much about scap loading but it looks like he’s doing the bad kind), but there is some serious movement on his cutter. numbers look ok.
