I know nothing
about almost any of the players available, so I’ll just smile and nod as I trust Hopkins’ crew to pick whatever players they feel are the best on the board.
In the meantime, holy shit, we have Justin Smoak! I hereby dub this the Holy Shit, Thanks Houston! draft.

so, this might be a little premature
but where does he land on the Rangers off season prospect rankings?

Kevin Castner
Fastball: Castner threw his fastball in the 92-95 mph range.
Fastball movement: It’s a heavy fastball with some sink.
Slider: He throws a hard slider.
Changeup: Castner throws an offspeed pitch, a changeup or a splitter, but he doesn’t show it often.
Control: When he’s able to repeat his mechanics, his command is fine.
Poise: He’s got the look and mentality to be a short reliever.
Physical Description: Castner is a big right-hander who looks the part of an intimidating closer-type with a Jason Isringhausen-type body.
Medical Update: A shoulder injury forced him to miss his freshman year, but he’s now healthy.
Strengths: A real power pitcher with an electric fastball and hard slider.
Weaknesses: He’s got no offspeed pitch to speak of. He’s had some serious delivery problems in the past which looked better at the beginning of his outings, but fell apart the longer he was out there. A lack of mechanics leads to loss of command.
Summary: Big, intimidating and armed with a power arsenal, he’s got the raw tools to be a short reliever some day. He’ll need quite a bit of polish as he doesn’t have a ton of experience on the mound. His delivery has been bad in the past and while it’s been refined, he had some trouble maintaining it throughout an outing. But this kind of arm strength, in that kind of body, doesn’t grow on trees … so he’s bound to garner some interest.

Castner
I really like what I read about him. All these teams spend 1st round picks on relievers and this guy sounds just as good as them once he gets his stuff together.
I can see him being our future closer.

With the way the draft is shaping up
How many people do you think we’ll be able to sign? We usually average 50% and sign about 25 guys. Obviously, most are top of the draft.
Anyone think that a player we drafted so far won’t sign?

Disagree
Sounded like the org and player hadn’t talked ahead of time, but the money angle had to be premeditated.
Fewer picks this year, he looks like Kiker, etc. I bet he’ll get done.
I know the financial issues just telescope when talking about first-year players vs free agent veterans but…what’s $500k? Just give him that little bit of money. Sell another player to Japan if it stings so bad.
Go Strangers.

I bet he gets signed
it just sounds a lot like garret nash last year. The day after he said his demands were high and everyone knew it. He also said he never talked or heard from the rangers until he got drafted, thats the comp I was trying to make.
The money isnt always the issue. Selig and mlb bears down really hard on teams that continually and habitually bust slot. You cant do it with every pick unless you are bigger than or above the game as the yanks and sox are. Or if you own little caesars.

I would really like
to see us take a chance on some top high school players. My two favorite were galloway and daniel webb and we had a chance on both, webb several times. At this point the picks arent as valuable and if we really are going to spend in the draft then lets get some serious talent.

i remember him lighting up the Little League World Series a few years back. 1 high schooler, 1 jc player, and a whole bunch of college kids most likely to end up as relievers. Although I have to admit I dont know much about these players and will wait for some news from the pros, but I would like to see a couple of O’campos drafted soon.

Well, not the FSU guy I would have wanted them to take, but still pretty cool that they did. I think I actually had a class with this guy once. His profile on seminoles.com is sort of messed up, says he’s still a freshman, which isn’t true. But, here are his stats from this year:
.328/.429/.638 17 HR (second on the team, to you know who), 28 SO in 235 ABs, 38 BB, 72 RBI
Had 21 multi-hit games, and 21 multi-rbi games.
Played exclusively at 1B this year.

OK found some info on C Murphy and Bleire
Murphy
SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Murphy was one of the biggest enigmas of the 2007 summer scouting season. He established himself as one of the top young power hitters in Southern California as a sophomore, hitting .352 with seven home runs for one of the top high school teams in the state. A strong junior season (.347, 7 HR) led to his selection as an Aflac All-American, but he made some changes to his swing during the summer that didn’t work and he struggled to make the kind of contact he showed before. His showing at Perfect Game’s National Showcase in Cincinnati in June exposed Murphy at his worst. To his credit, he kept plugging away, made some adjustments and was hitting better at the end of the summer. At his best, Murphy has a loose, powerful swing with lots of lift and power, and the ball explodes off his bat. He’s an aggressive hitter and rarely gets cheated at the plate. His struggles had more to do with timing issues. His speed, 4.45 seconds down the line, is his weakest tool and may limit him to first base in the future. Murphy is a solid defender at first and in the outfield, with alert, fluid actions around the first-base bag. But his games revolves around his bat.—DAVID RAWNSLEY
UPDATE (5/15): Murphy has been compared to a young Ryan Klesko, and there is a similar all-or-nothing approach in their games. Murphy can hit the ball as far as anyone when he gets his pitch and his timing is down, and that happened frequently enough this spring to keep scouts interested.—DR
Bleire
SCOUTING REPORT: Bleier was unknown to national scouts prior to the 2008 season, but by adding 40 pounds in college to a 6-foot-3 frame he has gone from a low-80s, lanky high school lefthander to a 90-mph college ace. He went a commendable 8-2, 3.60 as a sophomore and topped that this spring against much stiffer competition by going 7-1, 2.09 with 17 walks and 76 strikeouts in 90 innings as Florida Gulf Coast, a new member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, played a full Division I schedule for the first time. Bleier is a polished southpaw in the Mark Buehrle-mould, with a very good slider/changeup combination and pinpoint command of all three of his pitches. He moved steadily up draft boards over the second half of the 2008 season and could be picked as high as the late-second or early-third round.—

Heres the rest
Smoak
SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Smoak cemented his status as a top prospect for the 2008 draft when he was just a freshman at South Carolina. He hit 22 home runs that year and was arguably one of the top hitting prospects to play in the Cape Cod League in years that summer, drawing regular comparisons to Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton. He won league MVP honors after a huge year at the plate that included a league-high 11 home runs. He was a mirror-image from both sides of the plate, showing smooth, fluid swings with outstanding bat speed and an easy lift. He has the ability to hit balls high and far and takes a very healthy cut. Smoak hit 17 homers as a sophomore as he was pitched more carefully, but was humbled last summer with Team USA. He hit just .223-3-19 overall and failed to homer in his final 102 at-bats. It was the first time in his career that he had ever really dealt with failure and he appeared to lose his confidence. More than anything, he got eaten up by changeups; he found himself getting overly anxious and continually off balance at the plate as he tried to reach for pitches. At his peak form, Smoak has exceptional power from both sides, especially from left center to right center, and stays inside the ball well but may need to pull balls more often as a number of his deep drives to center field are caught on the warning track. Scouts say he needs to stay through the ball longer to maximize his pull power. Defensively, Smoak is a top-notch first baseman, but he could improve his footwork around the bag and ability to come in on balls. He has a playable arm for the position. But scouts say he doesn’t spend enough time working on his defense as he concentrates most of his time with swinging the bat. First base is a premium position at the college level in the 2008 draft, yet it would be a surprise if Smoak is not the first first baseman drafted—his struggles last summer aside.—ALLAN SIMPSON
UPDATE (5/1): Smoak became a more complete hitter this year than in his first two college seasons. He topped South Carolina with a .389 average (entering the Southeastern Conference tournament), up significantly from the .303 and .315 figures he posted as a freshman and sophomore. He took what pitchers gave him more willingly and used the whole field as his hitting domain—as evidenced by a team-best 18 doubles. He also was more adept at staying balanced and patient on off-speed pitches, and generally showed outstanding plate discipline in the process. His 51-26 walk-to-strikeout differential was one of the best ratios in the country. It didn’t hurt that he had James Darnell and Phil Disher, who combined for 34 home runs, hitting behind him in the Gamecocks order, but Smoak became a legitimate candidate to be one of the first 5-6 players drafted when he became one of the hottest hitters in the country over the second half of the season—both for power and average. In addition to his near-.400 average, he led the Gamecocks with 20 homers.—AS
Ross
SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): If the 6-foot, 180-pound Ross was 6-3, 200, scouts might be talking about him as the top lefthanded pitching prospect in the country. They still might before the spring is over. Ross is a very agile, quick-twitch type of athlete in the Mike Hampton-style. He pounds the strike zone with three pitches that show plus quality at times: a 90-92 mph fastball, an 83-mph slider and a low-80s changeup. Ross pretty much uses all three pitches interchangeably and he can work over good hitters pretty quickly. As a high school junior, he went 4-5, 2.95 with 67 strikeouts in 43 innings. The difference athletically between Ross and most prospect pitchers is evident is their choice of secondary sports; Ross is an all-league soccer player when he’s not playing baseball.—DAVID RAWNSLEY
UPDATE (5/1): Ross is the most polished of the Kentucky quartet of top prep prospects, and did the most this spring to live up his reputation. His fastball was in the 88-93 mph range, touching 94, as it has been for two years now, and his ability to pitch at that velocity, hold it deep into games and also command three secondary pitches—a curve, 82-83 mph slider and changeup—sets him apart. He gained the measure of lefthander Nick Maronde, his crosstown rival, in a heavily-scouted game earlier this year when he struck out 14, walked none and gave up an unearned run. On the season, he was 5-1, 1.07 with six walks and 73 strikeouts in 45 innings. The one knock on Ross continues to be his size, and it may knock him down a few pegs on draft boards and relegate him to a set-up role at the pro level.—ALLAN SIMPSON
T. Murphy
SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Scouts weren’t sure whether Murphy was a pitcher or position player when he came out of high school as an 11th-round draft pick, or through his freshman year at UCLA when he didn’t pitch at all and had limited success as a center fielder. But the physical lefthander has left little doubt that he is a pitcher first and foremost now. In fact, he could be one of the sleepers of the draft if he shows as much improvement this spring as he did last year and can master his control problems. Despite a modest 5-4, 5.68 record, Murphy moved in as the No. 2 starter in the UCLA rotation in 2007 after starting the season in relief. Most impressive were his 96 strikeouts in 76 innings, including a 14-strikeout effort against Arizona State, arguably the nation’s best hitting team a year ago. Murphy has impressive stuff with a 90-92 mph fastball, good curve and a much-improved changeup, but needs to improve his control after walking 33 and command after being touched for 84 hits. He will continue to see spot duty in the outfield for the Bruins, but after hitting just .248 with one homer in his first 153 collegiate at-bats his emphasis will be on pitching.—ALLAN SIMPSON
UPDATE (5/15): Murphy was the No. 1 starter for UCLA this spring, though his 4-6, 3.89 record with 40 walks and 97 strikeouts in 86 innings was a contributing factor in a disappointing season for the Bruins. He did little to enhance his standing in the draft as his fastball was mostly in the 88-90 mph range—not an electric 90-92 mph offering as was hoped and which might have elevated him into the first round. His 74-76 mph curve flashed average, while his changeup, his third pitch, was merely serviceable at 78-80 mph. Murphy maintains a lot of draft appeal as he has a strong, well defined athletic frame, generally repeats his delivery, hides his pitches well and is a tough competitor.—AS
Wieland
SCOUTING REPORT: By far the best high school prospect in northern Nevada, Wieland has always had an advanced sense of pitching and how to attack and set up hitters. When his velocity jumped to the 91-92 mph range this year, giving him a third solid pitch, his prospect status was solidified. His more-established curveball has sharp, three-quarters break and his changeup creates good deception off his fastball. He has an acute ability to throw strikes with each, and walked just nine in 61 innings this spring while striking out 113. He also gave up just 27 hits and went 7-2, 1.26 overall. Wieland has also garnered interest from scouts as a shortstop with solid hitting skills, and he would probably be used as a two-way player if he should up in school at San Diego State.—ALLAN SIMPSON

I don't mind the college players that much
at this point, you’re not going to hit many future prospects anyway. With college guys who are flawed enough to fall this low, you can pick them up cheap, bring them in to your coaches and see if you can correct any obvious flaws. If you do, then maybe they click into place and can be a good player for a really low pick, kind of like Ian Kinsler did.
High school kids who sign in the late teens or 20’s are going to be flawed in some way as well, but in addition to fixing whatever problems they may have, they also have to learn to be away from home, play really competitive ball for the first time, and have real pressure to succeed (I imagine that for even most 30th rounders HS ball is “easy”).
I’d rather just grab the college guy, have him focus on the 1, 2, or 3 things that you think are fixable, and then if it doesn’t work, send him on his way.
by JBImaknee on Jun 6, 2008 12:39 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yea but,
Im not talking about run of the mill high schoolers. There are still some top hs players that have not signed and while some are considered unsignable, some are just tougher signs. I just want to take a chance on a few of the latter and see if we can get them in here like we did last year.
Im not against college players, but drafting them exclusively is not the way to go.

For those who don't know
Harold Martinez was THE HS hitter at the start of teh year. Big time bat, 6’3”, but really struggled this year with the scouts watching.
He’ll likely go to college, but if he signs and he works out, he could be the best HS bat taken this draft.

Hmm
I can’t really tell you about the college guys, but -
Justin Smoak – I’d guess he gets about 2 million, maybe a bit more. He was expected to go top 10, and I think we give him a bit more money in exchange for no ML contract.
Robbie Ross – Big time Kentucky Commitment. I’d guess 1 million-1.2 million. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t sign, and I’d be shocked if we signed him before 1 week to the deadline.
Tim Murphy – easy sign. Slot money, maybe a bit above it.
Joe Wieland – tough to tell. Not really strong commitment. I’d guess 300,000-500,000 range? (2nd round money)
Clark Murphy – He wants to play, so I’d put him at the same place, if not a bit lower than Wieland
Richard Bleier – Easy sign too. He wants to play, a bit above slot would be my guess
Will Thompson – I’d guess what Robert Wilkins got last year would be a good figure for him.
Harold Martinez – Let’s just say if we signed him, Bud would be real mad at us.

Martinez scouting report from the beginning of the year
Martinez and fellow Miami area corner infielder Eric Hosmer offer the two most promising sticks from the prep class. Martinez bats right-handed, and has the easy athleticism that allows him to play shortstop at the prep level. While he’s not an immediate candidate to move off the position, most think that his frame will continue to add strength which will prompt a move to the hot corner. His tools allow him to profile as a future Gold Glover at the position, with good lateral quickness and a very strong throwing arm. He will make his mark with his bat, with an easy swing that produces power to all fields, and an overall offensive package and body that has drawn a few comparisons to Alex Rodriguez. That tool package makes Martinez a candidate to be taken among the top 10 picks, and he has committed to play for Miami.

There we go
I move up the thread to answer a question about signability and we get one of the hardest signs in the draft. doubtful he signs from the sound of it as his slide wasnt based on demands but rather performance.
The question is whether JD and co. really believe in his potential and are willing to pay based on that. Either way I like the pick, lets keep it up.

2001 Brent Burger 26th round 773rd pick
2002 Steven Guerra 40th round 1186th pick
2004 Casey Larson 46th round 1364th pick
2006 Matthew Drummond 35th round 1045th pick
all drafted by the Orioles… I know the local Orioles scout (except he switched to the Dodgers a year or two ago) so that makes some sense.
I’m guessing some of these guys were drafted out of high school and drafted again out of college… I’m sure that’s how Botts ended up in the Rangers’ system.
/me checks Botts’ B-R page
Geez… drafted in the 26th round one year and the 46th round the next… guess college didn’t work out so well for him.

Ok guys draft grade, whats yours?
for day 1?
for day 2?
mine would be a B+ for day 1 love smoak, like the HS kids but not that big on Ross when other better talent was there IMHO. drops from an A for not snagging melville.
day 2: C- only thing that keeps it off of D or lower is the Harold drafting.

meh i think
day 1 is an A simply becuase we got smoak. that said melville would have been too much and getting ross instead is somewhat questionable (all things considered). i read that mellville missed a ton (25-35+) of practices and was throwing indoor in iowa which im sure impacted him on the mound. i dont know whast more of a dissapointment. not drafting mellville this year or not drafting effing jordan walden a few years ago
day 2 – all depends on if we sign martinez. i simply do not understand drafting a 5’ nothing’ infielder no matter how “good” he is. its one thing if its a pitcher who has shown he could at least be something (DRH) but are you shitting me?
surely were gonna sign harold martinez…right?

correction
“melville would have been too much
meant mellville would have been GREAT (as in too good) but equally would have cost too much (wanted pick 10-15 money). i bet he goes to UNC….
even then though i dont understand ross. say he costs 1.25 mil (wants 1.5 i doubt he will get it) wouldnt paying 1.6ish to get mellville be worth it? to me most def. thats what, 350k? and isnt it worth it to sign mellville instead of throwing 350k at a latin guy? its not liek we had a ton of picks at the top of the draft and getting mellville there would have probably cemented us as having one hell of a day 1…and probably a consensus grade A for day 1 if we signed him
that said, we have got to sign harold martinez. throw money at him…do what the yankees did with suttle last year (i think thats who it was). PLEASE sign him.

Walden
was worse. I dont think his price tag was as high, plus he was a texas kid that went to the angels in the 8th round i believe.
Hollander is 5’9 sr middle infielder who went in the 20th round. herrera was a short pitcher with a great track record who went in the 44th or 46th round. Now i dont know hollanders stats but thats a tough comp. to make other than the height issue.
by rchawk12 on Jun 6, 2008 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well that was my point sorry
that he was 5’9’’ and the odds of a 5’9’’ player making the big leagues is VERYVERYVERY slim to none.
my point is that it sure was early to pick someone liek that, no matter what.

I agree completely
if anything I was just trying to further point out how disappointing a pick it was. I dont want to say it was bad because at this point I really know nothing about many of these players offhand.

this seems ridiculous
sorry but it does. You still have to draft the players and to waste a 20th round pick to get on a college coach’s good side is ludicrous.
