Robbie Ross may have signed for $1.6 million
I was reading Rivals' College Baseball message board and came across a post where a UK baseball fan said the rumor is that Ross signed for $1.6 million.
The UK coach left to take the Mississippi State job so that may help us, but then again they just promoted the pitching coach to be the new head coach and he is maybe the guy that recruited Ross.
I have no idea if Ross would have already signed, but if he orally agreed to sign, that is great news for us. Basically, this is just a rumor that may be completely untrue, but we can hope.
The only thing I worry about is if MLB is going to attempt to stall him from signing so that his way over slot bonus doesn't effect other draftees. If Selig attempts that, I think JD should put on his terminator sunglasses and tell Selig what he can do with his slotting system.

If we signed Ross for this much over slot
is this a positive or a negative for Harold Martinez?

I guess it could go one of two ways
1) We just used a large portion of our signing budget and Martinez is definitely going to school.
2) We are going to do whatever it takes to get talent into our system and are going to money whip Martinez.
Let’s hope for option two.

I know it's not going to happen
but the first 18 picks the Rangers drafted all seem signable. I like the fact that the biggest worry we are all having is a potential steal in round 19.

actually,
i completely agree. that is why i liked this draft more than most. I really liked the first 12 picks (no offense to steady eddie koncel) and the main reason is that all seem to have upside, and are still signable.

Yeah
I give JD and Hopkins and the whole staff credit. I like this draft. You hit the nail on the head. They do have some upside AND are signable. Upside is useless if you cant even get them into your organization.

i am VERY curious to see
how many of those kids KC gets signed.

My guess is
16 out of 50. No way they sign Melville.

ok ill bite...
you do realize that the only reason we only have to worry about a potential steal in round 19 is b/c we made absolutely no effort to steal any1 else all day on day 2 (we had a ton of college Sr. drafted guys read: easy sign read: 23 years old read: much less unfulfilled potential). we sat through the whole draft on the day 2 thread discussing picks (you fellas know who you are and that was awesome, if you missed it hit it up their are some important links etc) and we all felt we coulda had higher talent levels at picks from the 1st of the day and that we drafted a lot of Sr. guys who are out of options and must sign to prolong their dream. they should in theory go through our system decently quick but to be honest the fact that we didnt go after much if any HS talent until our chances of signing them were nil is pretty disappointing
they better sign these guys quick b/c we left a lot of kids who will be much higher thought of in the future on the table when we made our picks on day 2. if your not gonna take risks and spend money you better sign what you draft.

I agree that maybe
some more risks could have been had but how many of those high ceiling HS players are really going to sign? Also, maybe these were just simply the best guys on the rangers’ at the time. And im sure that board is constructed with signability in mind. I do believe they will sign what they drafted too. If they dont, I will be as upset as you seem to be honestly.
by booyahcaveman on Jun 7, 2008 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
In all likelihood we never intended to sign H-Mart
Teams do this with high ceiling HS’ers in the late rounds. They draft a premium talent just on the off chance he has a change of heart, drops his demands and decides to sign.
The White Sox did it with Jordan Danks. We did it last year with that Keyes kid who was a solid commit to UT. We did it with Brad Lincoln a while back.
The 40 trumps all!!!

so the kid was asking for 1.5
and we offered 1.6. that doesn’t sound like very prude negotiating on our part. i would think they would haggle a little more.
by clark on Jun 6, 2008 8:55 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps he was asking for more.
Ill take it though. Obviously, it is never a good practice to leave your second pick unsigned.
by booyahcaveman on Jun 6, 2008 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am not sure if he was asking for $1.5 or not
I heard he was asking for mid first round money. I don’t know if I ever heard an exact dollar amount.
by uthornfan on Jun 6, 2008 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
but isn't that more
than we paid Beavan last year? And we held out with him until the last minute. i just don’t buy it.
by clark on Jun 6, 2008 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
we paid beavan 1.5 mil. I guess he should have negotiated better :-)
by booyahcaveman on Jun 6, 2008 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Beaven
also signed for a bit over slot because he was an actual upper-mid 1st round talent that slipped a few picks down.
by Gdawg on Jun 6, 2008 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
the point is
i doubt this team thinks more highly of beavan than ross. i have no problem with paying a draft pick, but paying him more than any of our top picks last year might not sit well with some.
by clark on Jun 6, 2008 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
hey havent you seen the news?
Inflation, Inflation!!!! haha jk…..Seriously, ill wait til this is officially announced. Also, Ross may have had more bargaining power than Beavan did last year. We had so many picks we obviously didnt want to lose one but if we did our compensation wouldnt have been bad (not quite sure what it is, but i think we would have gotten an equivalent pick). This year if we lose our second rounder it kind of dampens all the positive buzz around us Smoak-ing out.
by booyahcaveman on Jun 6, 2008 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think the Rangers are the side that held out with Beavan
My guess is that he signed for what we originally offered, or damn close to it.
by uthornfan on Jun 6, 2008 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was asking for 1.575, so maybe they just rounded up
in this rumor, but it does seem like there is some poor negotiating on the Rangers part to draft him yesterday and today tell him that they’ll give him the exact amount that they want.

Pre-draft deal
The only thing I can think of is maybe the Rangers and Ross had a pre-draft deal worked out. It doesn’t seem that likely, but I can’t imagine any negotiating has gone on already, let alone enough to come up with a bonus way above slot.
by uthornfan on Jun 6, 2008 10:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Good point
It’s possible that the Rangers had a handshake deal with Bob Ross before making the pick. He has been steady with his contractual demands and I doubt Daniels thought he could sign him for slot money.
Another thing: I’m not sold that he should receive 1st round money. Is he legitimate 1st round talent? I just don’t like little pitchers. I’m prejudiced against small pitchers. I understand and respect his skill set and his potential plus control and command of three pitches is intriguing. That said, I don’t little pitchers that lack overwhelming stuff and rely on command and deception especially if they want 1st round money. I’m probably way off on this.

Considering the finances of baseball...
In a world where Ben Broussard makes almost $4 million dollars for the kind of output he produced, I’m sure this pitcher is worth 1.6M of Hicks’ money.

no doubt
ill never forget when we signed Cat people said it was so we could save money in the draft. sometime shortsightedness just pissed me off.

The thing about this
is that even if the main fact of the report isn’t true, it’s possible that something did happen that moved them close to a deal (which could then take two months to finish). It could also be complete fabrication, but there’s something to be said for the report.

Along these lines
I learned in Jason Cole’s interview with Clark Murphy that the Rangers were negotiating with him literally right up until his name was called. The Marlins, too. The Marlins didn’t like his minimum signing number, the Rangers approved it. He’s now our property instead of the Marlins – apparently to Murphy’s delight.
Jason Cole rulz, btw. He’s still trying to get Smoak on the phone for an interview.

To tell you the truth
I don’t see how that dude was even drafted. He has one of the ugliest swings I have ever seen. I guess the Rangers saw some potential there and feel like they can iron out all of the kinks in his swing. They’ve got their work cut out for them, that’s for sure.
