The truth behind Ponson.
Here's the truth about the Rangers organization.
Letting Ponson go had nothing to do with character, or ethics. It had to do with a bunch of prissy little boys who have no idea what it takes to get to the big show. How do you take a great group of hitters, and leave them nothing on the mound? Rangers baseball 101. My son, who is 14, could manage the Rangers better - because he would want to WIN.
Every year we hear its a "building" year. I wasn't aware that's how you play the game. So - basically, the strategy isn't to ever make it to a pennant, its to waste the fans hopes and dreams on running an organization to feed talent into other teams.
We've taken the game of baseball and watered it down into stats and cardboard cut outs of players - sign guys like Ponson as if you are doing the world some great compassionate move, and he starts to win...time to let him go.
Give me Ozzie Guillen. Give me Juan Gonzales' temper tantrums. Give me Canseco, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris ( who hated the press & managers ) Pete Rose. Give me Shrek. Soriano. You can keep Michael Young, who has no personality, and uses more aids to protect himself while he's hitting, than true hitting talent. GIVE ME JOSH HAMILTON. Give me the 1919 White/Black Sox. Give me Roger Clemens.
All of you in lonestarball comment on Ryan as if he is the immaculate savior of the Rangers...well, if you look at it - the bullpen, quite frankly, couldn't suck any more. What is supposed to be a 12 man bullpen is comprised of two now. And any hopes of this team actually making it are ONCE AGAIN dim.
This is why I am a Red Sox fan. Because they want to win. They know how to win.
One of you asked me once if I am a recent Red Sox fan. Sure, as recent as 1986...when my fellow UT Longhorns fan & Texan Roger Clemens was the Cy Young winner and one hell of a young man...who has used steroids, cheated on his wife, had about 10 bar fights, escaped a few DUIs, and I mean ESCAPED, fought with his teammates - but all the while loved his sons and the game. I'll take Clemens over Millwood and Padilla anyday.
Baseball is not a science. Its a game. For the fans. For spectators. And if the Rangers organization keeps running itself the way it does, it won't have any fans. At least, not like the REAL teams.
Bad bad bad move to release Ponson. They could have at least sat it out a little and traded him for someone or something....idiots. I digress.

how was Ponson killing their chemistry?
Or lack thereof. Do you have facts on this? Or do you all just make this crap up?
During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times. You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 at bats a season. That means I played seven years without ever hitting the ball.

Ask me a harder question next time
Let’s see here…
“Letting Ponson go had nothing to do with character, or ethics. It had to do with a bunch of prissy little boys who have no idea what it takes to get to the big show.”
“So – basically, the strategy isn’t to ever make it to a pennant, its to waste the fans hopes and dreams on running an organization to feed talent into other teams.”
“We’ve taken the game of baseball and watered it down into stats and cardboard cut outs of players – sign guys like Ponson as if you are doing the world some great compassionate move, and he starts to win…time to let him go.”
“You can keep Michael Young, who has no personality, and uses more aids to protect himself while he’s hitting, than true hitting talent.” (I wasn’t aware he wore Bonds-style arm guards at the plate.)
“All of you in lonestarball comment on Ryan as if he is the immaculate savior of the Rangers”
“And if the Rangers organization keeps running itself the way it does, it won’t have any fans. At least, not like the REAL teams.” (Oakland doesn’t have any fans either, and yet Boston respected that “not-real team” enough to try to hire Billy Beane.)
“They could have at least sat it out a little and traded him for someone or something….idiots.” (You don’t suppose the reason why there was a two-day delay between the final incident and the DFA was because JD worked the phones and could find no takers, do you? No, that CAN’T be it…)
THIS MIGHT BE
The worst post in the history of LSB. Actually, it IS the worst post ever.
”...who has used steroids, cheated on his wife, had about 10 bar fights, escaped a few DUIs, and I mean ESCAPED, fought with his teammates – but all the while loved his sons and the game.”
*You say you have a 14 year old son. So lets say your son’s dad goes out and bangs some hooker while out of town, repeatedly breaks the law, and beats the shit out of his co-workers. But he loves his kids and loves his job! Sounds like a great guy, I’d have him work in my office any day.

there is a difference between a temper tantrum and what ponson has done
milton bradley is the managers favorite player for gods sake.
ponson has been terrible for 4+ years and even during his good start this year the numbers suggest he was going to fall off. he then proceeded to have 3 incidents in a week for a team that said they would have no tolerance with such incidents.
your frustrated rant here has very little actual content.

cursed out his teammates and manager?
stayed up late getting drunk the night before a start?
when are you on a zero tolerance policy as a result of multiple drunk driving arrests and punching a freakin judge (not to mention being a god awful pitcher for the past 4 years), thats plenty.
newsflash, the cowboys have the same kind of policy for pacman. if pacman causes problems the guy is gone.
the reason cowboys fans are excited about him is because hes a pro bowl talent. ponson managed to get some outs so far this year, but hes still not actually a good pitcher. that part may involve some hypocritical thinking, but its just reality in sports.
the fact is that the rangers had a policy on ponson and he broke it. deal with it.
padilla has issues in his past, milton bradley is one of the top few problem childs of the mlb, josh hamilton has history. the rangers are not exactly playing it safe here.

well...
i woudl love to if you would simply explain what it is you were attempted to convey with:
“And Washington needs alot of disrespect.”
creatively, i’d first suggest using the conjunction ‘and’ to start a sentence is always an issue. despite popular opinion, it is not grammatically incorrect, if, and, or when, it is being used it is the exception and not the rule. in which case it is to be used sparingly. however, i’m assuming that more to your point, washington should be receiving disrespect for the way, and i’m just ‘spit-balling’ here since its really not clear, he has been doing his job… either way, i’d probably lean more towards a delivery in the “washington’s perfomance thus far deserves disrespect” or even more sardonically you could opine “washingtons performance to date isn’t respectable…”
either option, juxt opposed to yours is much more stomachable… or “alot more” as i’m sure you would put it…

What a wonderfully timed rant
BOSTON—The emotions from an on-field brawl in Thursday’s Red Sox-Rays game may have brought a chemistry issue to light for the defending World Series champs.Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez and first baseman Kevin Youkilis had to be separated after exchanging words in the dugout at the end of the fourth inning in Thursday’s 7-1 win over Tampa Bay.
Ramirez pointed at Youkilis before being escorted down the runway at Fenway Park toward the clubhouse by trainer Paul Lessard and a few other players. Later in the game, NESN, the team’s broadcast network, showed grainy footage of Ramirez apparently taking a swipe at Youkilis.
A Red Sox source told ESPNdeportes.com that the cause of the dugout disagreement was Youkilis’ temper following a poor at-bat.
“It all happened because Manny complained about Youkilis’ habit of throwing bats, helmets and other objects in the dugout when he has a bad at-bat, something that has become a constant practice,” the source said.
“Other players have told Youkilis in the past about the situation, which makes him look selfish and that he is more worried about each at-bat than about the team. If Boston is winning easily, there’s no reason to throw objects all over the dugout because of a bad at-bat.
“There was a meeting where the team let Youkilis know that many of his teammates were tired of his explosive reactions for each bad plate appearance. It became very bothersome … more so when the team is winning and it’s in first place. There’s not much room for individualistic attitudes.”
Concur...

During my 18 years I came to bat almost 10,000 times. I struck out about 1,700 times and walked maybe 1,800 times. You figure a ballplayer will average about 500 at bats a season. That means I played seven years without ever hitting the ball.

This is the type of thing that quickly gets annoying.
If you want to talk about baseball, then please give me something to talk about. Give me the fact, the reasons, and the logic behind your arguments. Don’t want to use stats? Fine, give me your visual evaluations and scouting reports. But when all you do is go around and throw a bunch of poison, which have little relations with one another together and claim that your knowledge and wisdom is so far superior, without actually explaining how and why, it is difficult to take any of it seriously.
You say we have no pitching, and this is true, but you don’t just wish for pitching and have pitching magically appear in your hands. Can a good pitching team without hitting do well? Did you look at the Giants, Padres, Mariners, and the Blue Jays? Boston is a winner because they have both hitting and pitching, and it took them a long time to figure out how to do that. It is not an easy task, and is done through patient player development, wise trades, and good free-agency signings. Ironically, a lot of their success comes from the analysis of stats.
You say we water down the game to players without passion, but forget that stats are an objective measure of performance. Stats do not “make” a player, they reflect how much a player really contribute to a team. Passion and stats are not mutually exclusive, but only those who hates stats appear to think so.
However, most despicable part of this post, and as with some other supposed “fans”, is an absolute attempt to defy logic. Instead of following the evidence and facts to arrive at a conclusion, you invert the process and arrive at a conclusion first, and attempt to distort facts to fit your need while throw away the ones that do not match. You conclude that the organization is full of idiots, and you use this assumption (which is a fact to you) to explain everything. Why did they DFA Ponson? Oh let’s see, JD is an idiot, so whatever reason it is, it must be stupid anyway. Is it because he caused too much disturbance in the clubhouse? Nope, that can’t be it. It doesn’t seem stupid enough, there must be a “truer” story out there.
Then you try to link completely unrelated things together. How does passion of the game help you explain Ponson’s designation? Because he had passion? Passion of what? Or is it because the club doesn’t have passion which made them sign Ponson? If that’s a bad decision, why not get rid of him? What’s the reason behind anything? Do you ask that question?
Finally, don’t embarrass yourself by proclaiming yourself as a true fan. True fan does not mean unthinking fans. Have we been poor as an organization? Have we not won very much? Yes. Now ask your self why this is so. No, you don’t really want to ask that question do you, you don’t want to think about it. You say that the results is enough to indicate that they are idiots and will remain idiots, and anyone who questions or tries to dig deeper are wasting their time and therefore must be less than you.
This is the kind of crap that screws up so many things in the world.

David Murphy and Kason Gabbard returned to Fenway Park on Friday for the first time since Boston traded the duo to the Texas Rangers along with prospect Engel Beltre for Eric Gagne last July.
Both found tokens of appreciation upon their arrival.
The Red Sox presented both players with World Series rings commemorating their small roles in Boston’s 2007 world championship. Murphy played three games for the Red Sox last season, and Gabbard pitched in seven games.

But I have opinions, not always correct ones. This fanpost is ditzy enough to suspect either rabies or a collective buildup of mind altering substances. The examples cited do show a great awareness of baseball and its’ outstanding players some of whom have character issues or competitive distemper.
Just one thing. The mindset, in particular using “the scoreboard” as the metric for good versus bad, is not one I’d like to see raising a 14 year old.
Nice repartee, but I’d sure enjoy passionate argument without epithets or personality insults. Downhill all the way, ladies and gents. Keep raising the next generation to win at any cost and to out trash mouth anyone who bothers, much less disagrees, with you.

I am both a Ranger fan and
Red Sox fan. I have watched both since 1975 when I overcame football, and I have enjoyed the recent upsurge of the Sox. Truthfully, I enjoy seeing the Rangers create an organization that can compete with the Red sox. I believe they can and with the current group of players and organization that it can be done. Over the years, I have seen both teams with horrible records and really bad players. It was fun to be able to root for two teams, even if they were not the best in baseball. I am a “fan”. To take one team and balance baseball with the way it does it does its business and plays the game is quite naive. Why not take the Yankees and compare the Rangers to them? Why not take the Yankees and compare the Red Sox to them? Is it only because your team is now winning that gives you permission to bash another organization? Yes, the Rangers have made mistakes. Yes, the Rangers record over the years is not what the Red Sox have enjoyed, but can you legitimately compare and contrast any two teams in baseball? Some teams can outspend their mistakes, but most cannot, i.e. the Gagne trade. If you are posting because you actually think the Rangers did the wrong thing, then say so, in at least 75 words. If you are posting to create controversy, then you have done your thing. Now you can relish your victory and go home. If you want to talk baseball, you can go to no better blog that this, but as I have learned, bring your facts!

What are the facts in this case?
I’ve only heard a vague explanation from JD…along with lots of rumors and innuendo and name-calling and “drunk” references.
Do as you insist of others: Bring the facts…but you don’t have them.
Just a blind insistence that ‘there must be a reason, or they wouldn’t have done it”.
I’m sure there is a reason…but until I know it specifically, I won’t throw Ponson under the bus.
Besides, nearly everybody else has already done that…and backed over him several times.
I don't know Karate...but I know Karazy!
You miss read
the post. My point was that if her goal was to create controvery, she did it. However, if she wanted to talk baseball, this is the place to come and to bring facts when she makes her baseball comments. I posted nothing for which facts were needed.
There is alwasy a reason. It is not always the one we want to hear or agree, but I have said nothing negative about Mr. Ponson to have “thrown him under the bus.”
"The path you choose, you also choose its destination..."
Guess my venting was misplaced towards your post.
I was reacting to the phrasing “bring the facts”...a common tactic in these parts.
I’ve found an overwhelming condemnation of Ponson from those that expound that phrase, yet the facts in this matter have yet to be revealed. Disingenuity is a pet peeve, and if I misdirected it at you in overreaction to the acts of others, I apologize, pro.
I don't know Karate...but I know Karazy!
Maybe
Ponson faked all of it to get released since he wasn’t receiving big bucks(minor league contract), so now he can pick between the various clubs that may be calling him soon. He acts up to get released, he knows the money is elsewhere, and he must collect now while he’s pitching decent. Yankees may be calling him soon.
This post didn't deserve
this much attention, but it was kind of entertaining skimming the comments.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
A Red Sox fan talking about the futility of another team... ?
How relevant were the Red Sox in the grand scheme of things for 80 years before 2004?
A team that went a period of 80+ years without winning a damn thing, and were only relevant because they were the Yankees personal whipping boy…
Two Championships in 90 years, and the Red Sox Nation is as arrogant as they come. SMH…

OK.
First of all, what an epic post. Just absolutely amazing. I don’t think I’ve spotted such a poorly-thought-out, random, senseless argument about nothing inparticular in quite a while. Just classic.
Give me Ozzie Guillen. Give me Juan Gonzales’ temper tantrums. Give me Canseco, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris ( who hated the press & managers ) Pete Rose. Give me Shrek. Soriano. You can keep Michael Young, who has no personality, and uses more aids to protect himself while he’s hitting, than true hitting talent. GIVE ME JOSH HAMILTON. Give me the 1919 White/Black Sox. Give me Roger Clemens.
In order…ahem…
-Crazy homophobic manager with “Latino heat”
-More “Latino heat”
-Cheater
-Legend
-Legend
-Slightly overrated legend
-Cheater
-Career .270 hitter
-Good hitter, notoriously bad fielder
-Only player outside of Ichiro to have five consecutive 200-hit seasons
(side note: what does it mean that he uses more aids than talent? Like, the disease AIDS? Because that ain’t cool.)
-Future MVP
-Cheaters
-Cheater
So your hypothetical team would include a homophobic manager, some Latino heat, four cheaters, a handful of legendary hitters and a .270 career hitter?
Quite a grab bag.
"Boy, that is a gutless, 6-foot-7, .200-hitting formerly good player. What a joke." -Tom Grieve RE: Richie Sexson
There a difference between cheating and breaking a rule.
Classifying Pete Rose as “cheater” really kind of ticks me off. Cheating, in my mind, is gaining a competitive advantage by breaking the rules. What advantage did Rose get by gambling?
- HI-JACKED! * (no?)
The funniest part is...
She’s talking about those guys like they’re in the same realm as Ponson…
The glaring difference is, guys like Maris, Juan Gonzalez, Rose, Clemens, etc. had more than enough on the talent/production end of things to make putting up with their crappy attitudes or bad habits worth while… You don’t get rid of a legend like Babe Ruth because he’s ripping the cover off the ball drunk and overweight. You don’t get rid of Roger Clemens in his prime for sleeping with women on the road or being a complete jackass.
Ponson’s track record of shabby pitching over long stretches doesn’t exactly balance out the headaches that often come with his personality. If he were an ace like Clemens or an MVP like Juan Gonzalez, it’d be one thing. But he’s historically a mediocre, dime-a-dozen talent that isn’t worth the extra baggage…
Guys like Ponson and Kenny Rogers become expendible when the headaches outweigh the potential production. And rightfully so.

We are Rangers fans. We are the ones who’ve watched this team suck for the last 8 years. We are the ones who should be/are frustrated about Rangers management. I’m not going to let a Boston fan spew empty/factless rants about how my team should be run.

just thought i’d add to the 327+ comments on this thread. Have no idea what y’all are talking about though.
I have been reading LSB
since back in the day when it was on blogspot. I was gone all day traveling but I mean wow this might be the best thread in LSB history. Very entertaining and controversial.
I don’t know who this poster is but to say that the Ponson signing had nothing to do with ethics or character doesn’t make sense at all to me. If it didn’t have anything to do with that, why would the Rangers DFA a pitcher with an ERA+ of > 100? I don’t get it.
Since No One Else Has Asked...
If you’re such the Red Sox fan, why aren’t you over at Sons of Sam Horn having a pie fight over what to do to replace David Ortiz instead of dumping on the Rangers for shitcanning a pitcher who was a lousy excuse of a teammate?
Why exactly do you care about what happens in Arlington when every team but the Red Sox are in town?
She's been a diehard Sox fan since 2004
You can’t help but spread that kind of dedication to other teams…
Sidney deserved to get cut
They told him they weren’t going to accept any shenanigans, and he decided to close out the bar the night before he was scheduled to pitch. End of discussion. The Rangers’ defense, pitching schedule, whatever, it’s all irrelevant. I am sad to see this happen, but I totally understand the Rangers’ decision.

Thanks everyone
This just killed an hour at work.
Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."
Well maybe not quite an hour but you get the point.

I have all these “friends” that are just like you bosox….enjoy the Red Sox now, because when they start losing again, you will have to jump on another bandwagon…Red Sox fans do have loyalty…the true ones, but all you bandwagon pansies make me sick…I will take my losing ass Rangers anyday
Anybody listening to the Hardline?
According to several sources, Ponson reportedly called a “fairly-high ranking Rangers official” a racial epithet.
Yikes.

No, it was insinuated
that it was someone in management.

Yeah, I figured that
First Mike said official, then member. He suggested it wasn’t a top-management guy.
One of the coaches?
red sox fan....
I am pretty sure that you were not even a fan of the Sox before 2004. Way to be a bandwagon fan.
