Duran up, Lizard DFA'd
German Duran has been called up, and is starting at third base today, with Michael Young sitting.
Elizardo Ramirez has been designated for assignment, and, I suspect, will be put on waivers.
The Ramirez DFA is not unexpected...he was called up pretty much solely for the purpose of giving the Rangers another bullpen arm this past week, and probably would have been dropped when Vicente Padilla returned were it not for the Sidney Ponson kerfluffle.

Why not send Kam Loe down, or cut Robinson Tejeda again?
I kinda wanted to see the Lizard pitch again, and Loe and Tejeda have sucked lately.
Maybe this is a percursor to an Eric Hurley callup, though.

Because...
...the Rangers think Loe and Tejeda are better than Ramirez.

Was hoping it was going to be Tejeda today
or maybe even Littleton up instead of both of them.

Why do you think the Lizard is better?
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 8, 2008 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just dont trust Tejeda,
based mainly on the fact that he is going to be the rp coming in to clean things up and he hasn’t been throwing enough strikes. I haven’t given up on him since he is still relatively young but I wish they would of let him still work on some things in Oklahoma.

As a point of reference
Loe - 26 years old, 321 1/3 major league innings, 4.52 FIP
Lizard - 25 years old, 160 1/3 major league innings, 5.47 FIP
And if you used “real” ERA, rather than FIP, Loe has an even bigger edge (4.80-something to 6.40). And the Lizard has been pitching in the N.L., in more pitcher-friendly environments, than Loe.
Lizard has support because he’s a novelty. If he’d pitched for the Rangers the last few years, and put up the numbers here that he did in his previous stops, people would be reacting to him like he’s Ryan Glynn or Dan Miceli.

Stupid.
Why DFA El Lizardo? Give him a chance at least.
Tejeda should be freaking DFA’d. He has had enough chances plus Washington is too dumb to realize he is a starter not a reliever.
by coolaid on Jun 8, 2008 2:31 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah
changing him to a starter is going to solve everything

I don't think making Tejeda a reliever instead of a starter...
...is Washington’s call…

+1
It’s not, it’s the organization’s idea.

Also
fwiw, someone else will have to be sent down to make room for Gabbard/Hurley/whomever on Thursday. So if Lizard hadn’t been sent down today, he would have gone down on Thursday anyway.

Laird @ 3rd
isn’t as painful as watching melhuse at 3rd, but thank god we won’t have to go through that again. The OMFT did well enough, but the potential for a 3 errors in an inning is always looming.
Hopefully Duran does more at the dish this go ‘round. He was my “pick to click” last year and once again tricer beat me with his pick…Boggs. I’m dwarfed beside the looming shadow of The Tod

He looked fine
He probably has the same arm and mobility as Blalock. If he was a Maxram hitter, he could actually be the third baseman.

Melhuise
Its unbelievable that 3 innings coming in as an injury replacement makes so many people pissed at the guy. Yall sound like we played him there everyday or something

On a team
which already has issues with it’s fielding, adding a potential train-wreck to the hot corner isn’t the best of solutions.
Melhuse started at least one game at 3rd last year and Laird has started 1 game at 3rd so far. And please reference where I said Laird did well enough. That’s not my issue. It’s the fact that Laird and/or Melhuse before him had the highest potential for a 3 error inning than anyone else on the team. I was only voicing my happiness that we wouldn’t have to resort to Laird at 3rd now. If that makes me ‘pissed’, I’m a lot more volatile than I thought.

Question AJM....
Did Lizard have options left and they still choose the DFA him, or was he out of options?

Lizardo was DFAd casuse im pretty sure they know he will clear waivers
Should be out of options, with him being up every year since 2004.
If we loose him, ohh well, If not back to AAA

Murphy batting 3rd
Maybe it’ll help him get out of his funk.

crap
why can’t gabbard suck right now, but maybe after mathis gets bombed today, both gabbard and hurley will join the rotation.

also, is Mayberry just getting a day off today?
he is 2 for his last 15.
by Longhorn on Jun 8, 2008 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
day off to get himself back into gear.
He should be hitting better right now. 22.2 LD% deserves more than a .318 BABIP.
Still not a lot of Ks, still not that many walks, but he’s hitting the ball pretty hard. I still think he gets a chance post ASB

OT: Dustin Pedroia
now hitting .263 with a .688 OPS
He’ll probably start the all-star game. Miles needs to knife the entire city of Boston.

Yeah, in the podcast
Meno picked Ellsbury/Pedroia/Ortiz over Kinz/MY/Hammy as the best top-3-in-the-order.
I didn’t check the stats, but I wasn’t sold.

He literally
does nothing well right now. Not hitting for average, not walking that much, without much pop and speed. What exactly does he do well? Is “Appearing like a Douchebag” a baseball skill?
BTW SHroomer, what do you think of Jose Vallejo and his unexpected uberpower this year?
by FirebatM3 on Jun 8, 2008 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
During Fall Instructs
Jason Cole made the case to me for Jose Vallejo – base-stealing demon , defense, switch-hitter, GREAT guy – just didn’t have the hitting numbers yet. He sent me an audio interview back then where Jose stated that his offseason goal was to get stronger so he could produce better power. Goal accomplished I’d say. He’s a guy who has worked his weaknesses diligently and gotten better. Looking forward to seeing if he can hang tough in the Texas League. And looking forward to see what he decides to work on next off-season so he comes back even better in 2009.
Now, btw back to you … during the Day 2 draft thread was it you that emphasized the first 12 picks in the draft as the core value guys? If so, I’m sold. The more I look at those first dozen guys the better I feel. Good grouping. Get ‘em signed and uleash them.

Nice
Vallejo will get a shot at the Texas league. The power is spiking.
Who stands out from those first 12 rounds?
Go Strangers.

A lot
Two good HS righties with projection, a good HS lefty with polish, a consensus top 10 talent, two Outfielders that hit very well this year, two college lefties with a bit of ceiling and some ability, and a HS hitter who was impressive, but incosistant mechanically. That’s a pretty good haul.

And I always believe you take
your core players in the top 10 rounds (so I’m not sure if that was me or not), anything you get beyond that is just filing.

Nice use of the word "kerfluffle"
I wonder if Ponson used that word during his discussion with Mr. Washington?
I had the word “fungible” through at me during a deposition and showed my ignorance by never having heard of the word.
I am now versed in the word “kerfluffle” and “fungible”.
