Minors - 6/9
Neftali Feliz vs Craig Italiano - tonight, the battle for the MWL Western Division crown reaches the temperature of red hot molten magma. Momma.
Kasey Kiker starts for BAK - In 21.2 IP at home Kiker has a 1.25 ERA. In 31.1 IP on the road Kiker has a 6.61 ERA. Uh-oh, game's in San Jose tonight. Time to turn that road frown upside-down.
Michael Schlact goes for Frisco. This means he's likely who we get to see on TV this Saturday. Maybe Andrus will be back at SS by then. And maybe Borbon will be called up by then ... seeing how Scott Lucas has declared BAK's pennant drive a virtual mathematical failure.
Dustin Nippert starts for OKC - Would a sparkling performance make him a dark-horse candidate for a Saturday start with the Rangers? Mayberry is hitting .217 for June - .243 over his last 10 games. Everybody can calm down now.

8th-round pick Mike Bianucci on June 3rd - pre-draft -
Bianucci stuck around, too. He was selected [in 2007 - ed.] as a draft-eligible sophomore in the 23rd round by the Los Angeles Angels, but returned to Auburn to improve his contact rate, hit home runs and stay healthy.
He's satisfied he did all three, and says he won't come back for his senior season.
"If you don't come out this year, you've got no leverage next year," Bianucci said.
8th-round pick Mike Bianucci on June 6th - post-draft -
Five Auburn baseball juniors and one sophomore were chosen Friday in the major league baseball draft.
At least one wasn't thrilled with the way it went down.
"I really didn't go as high as I wanted to go, but that's how it goes," outfielder Mike Bianucci said after being chosen in the eighth round by the Texas Rangers. "The draft is a funny thing. I heard things all day yesterday. From the second round until the sixth round closed out, teams were asking 'will you sign here, will you sign there?.' It is what it is."
Bianucci, a two-time All-Southeastern Conference selection who hit .320 last season with a team-high 13 home runs. He said he will keep a close eye on who is named to replace Tom Slater as Auburn's coach.
"That will play a role in whether I decide to come back," Bianucci said. "Yeah, that will definitely play a big part in it."
4th-round pick Joe Wieland told Jason Cole he's being assigned to the AZ Rookie League team and is leaving for Surprise next Sunday. From the interview:
Wieland: I throw a four-seam and a two-seam fastball. I’m usually about 89-91 or 92. I throw a curveball and a changeup. When I’m up there, my goal is to go out and I’m going to get you out. That’s my mentality out there. If I’m not confident in what I have, then I’m not going to be able to make pitches and go with the plan.
Heads-up - John Sickels plans on discussing "Controversial Prospect " Engel Beltre this Wednesday.
Sharpen your swords.
And finally ...
Josh Hamilton - 26
David Murphy - 26
Ian Kinsler - 25
Brandon Boggs - 25
Taylor Teagarden - 24
John Mayberry - 24
Jarrod Saltalamacchia - 23
Max Ramirez - 23
Julio Borbon - 22
Chris Davis - 22
Justin Smoak - 21
Elvis Andrus - 19
Ruddy Yan - 26
To quote Mike Bianucci - "It is what it is."

Have we heard
If anyone else has signed? Much like UFA’s in the nfl, I feel like signings are usually announced in bulk. I figure we will hear that a good number of these college seniors have signed in the coming days.

I’m pretty pumped about T-Murph.
I also like the kid who was supposed to have been hot shit after two years at Illinois but missed his junior year after getting kicked off the team for being so dumb at school. You don’t have to take classes to pitch in the minors. Hopefully he signs and he’s still got the talent.

Mayberry’s BABIP so far this month. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the K rate is up again and the LD rate is down. He’s still lifting about everything hit to him, but I’m willing to write off these 23 ABs as the abberation.

I believe so
(and he is pretty much Andrus’ biggest detractor) and there is some variety. However, if you compare how BA had him ranked with what the other publications had and what fans like us think, there isn’t a huge variation. Meanwhile Sickels didn’t even want to rank Beltre, and some of us were arguing that he should be considered for the top ten in one of the couple deepest systems in baseball.
With Andrus I think that the main question is how much pop he has in him. He needs to control the plate better than he has at this level, but I don’t think that people are all that concerned about that ability in the long run, or his ability to make contact, or his defense.

pitching
Its so nice that on almost every night we have one of our top pitching prospects pitching. Some nights there are multiple prospects. I can’t remember the last time we had so much to look forward to in the minors especially in the pitching department

Once the glut of these pitching prospects

by clark on Jun 9, 2008 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
People need to
keep both of these points in mind to temper their enthusiasm, but you do have to crawl before you can walk. Something that I’m not sure that the Rangers understood for a decade or so was that you have to have quantity of quality to give yourself much of a chance for developing enough good pitchers. The most encouraging thing about where the Rangers are with their lower level guys isn’t any one guy. It’s that they have a lot of the really promising type. Myopia can cause fans to confuse interesting sleeper types like Zach Phillips with prime guys like Feliz and Main. You like to have nice numbers of both, but the latter is the harder, and the Rangers have a really high number of those right now. Some will falter even by AA, and most won’t do anything special in the majors. But when you have a lot of them you give yourself some reasonable hope that a few will make a difference for you in a few years.

Smoak v. Davis
Who do you take?
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 9, 2008 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know what Z thinks, but
I like Smoak alot better than Davis, mostly because of the more discerning approach that Smoak takes to the plate. I think Davis has more power; he’s a freak in that department. I hope both are in the Rangers lineup by the end of next year.
by rooster on Jun 9, 2008 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Smoak right now I think
I think that 1/2 in the system right now are Smoak/Feliz in some order (once Smoak signs of course), with Andrus, Davis, etc. next.
They each have a big question mark in their offensive game, and either that answers it probably becomes a really good major leaguer (and it’s really a pretty similar issue, even though they seem to have completely different approaches), but I think that more people think that Smoak’s game translates to MLB success right now. It’s obviously tough to compare him with someone who is almost to the majors when he hasn’t played pro ball, of course.
And while neither of these guys is as highly regarded as either Teixeira or Blalock, I remember (I think you and I both) having a hard time convincing people that Teixeira could possibly be better than Blalock, since Blalock had proven himself to a degree and Teixeira hadn’t (and was a greedy sob with Boras as his agent).
by Brett Perryman on Jun 9, 2008 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
What is the issue they both needed to work on?
I thought from the reports I’ve read that they had quite different warts.
by rooster on Jun 9, 2008 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Davis needs to work on his approach, obviously, but beyond that he needs to fine tune his swing so that he can limit his swings and misses in the majors. For instance, if his only problem were approach, I don’t think he would have so many strikeouts.
With Smoak, you will see hints of contact ability being a question, and as I’ve said, despite the fact that he almost always controls the plate, I’m a little bothered by some low batting averages his Fr and So years and for Team USA.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 9, 2008 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The good thing is
that Davis will get the opportunity next year to prove himself at the ML level while Smoak works his way up the minors. The decision doen’t need to be made until 2010.

Adam probably
had already seen this, but I hadn’t noticed until today that Jim Callis addressed this in his discussion of which draft picks figured to immediately ascend to #1 in their respective systems (I think he counted eight, several of which didn’t come from the very top of the draft):
And while we’re on the subject of switch-hitting sluggers who played at Stratford High (Goose Creek, S.C.), I’ll give the edge to just-drafted first baseman Justin Smoak over first baseman Chris Davis in the Rangers system.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/ask-ba/2008/266307.html
I’m almost more intrigued by the fact that he ranks Davis #2, rather than say Beavan or Feliz, than that he has Smoak #1.

BTW
From the comments section of the “post-draft” Bianucci link above:
After watching Bianucci for three years I am still underwhelmed with his performance. He is like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead. When he is good he is very very good but when he is bad he is horrid. Another year in college would be good for him. Also Grinke in my opinion. Hate to say it but Hall will do well and he it is probably a good time for him to move. IMO he is the only one that we will really miss.
Agree with Grandpa on all counts, especially Bianucci being underwhelming. There is a reason he went so late and I am not sure another year will make him any better or do us any good.
Bianucci [God I love that name] missed out on both his opportunities to play in Cape Cod due to nagging injuries. So, we don’t know what he does with a wooden bat. He may be lucky he wasn’t exposed and take whatever the Rangers offer him. Then again, maybe he woulda mashed and we got lucky to grab a guy who adapts well to the shatterly Maple. I guess, for me, he just gets in line behind guys like Murphy and Harrison and Tracy and Smith and Moreland as possibles for a late-minors David Murphy-like talent epiphany.

Beltre
Month to month he’s been improving all of his numbers. Considering his age, that’s a real good sign. He’s not walking enough, but he’s also not striking out much either, and the K rate has dropped each month.
...and curse Sir Sidney Ponson, he was such a stupid git.
by t ball on Jun 9, 2008 2:56 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yep
You don’t notice it unless you’re watching closely, but no walking at all he was striking out about once in 5 AB in April, and now he’s in the once per 8 AB range. You can only cross you fingers that once he completely catches up to his league he’ll adopt a more mature approach, but given that he’s not at this point, it’s good to see that he’s seemingly swinging and missing less.
You never know unless you’re watching, I mean he could have been taking more pitches and therefore striking out more and still not drawing walks. But I think that he’s probably just making more contact. I know that his scouting reports coming into pro ball said that he was very patient for a guy his age from DR.

Another Draft Note
Richard Bleier, the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year who became the earliest pick in program history when Texas took him in the sixth round (183rd overall) on Thursday, signed with the Rangers two days later.
“I’ve been telling teams this whole time that I’d sign for slot money in the round I got drafted,” the 6-foot-3, 210-pound lefty said. “I’m sure that’s why they got me before another team did. They called me a couple picks before and said, ‘Would you sign?’ I said, ‘Absolutely.’”
He agreed for the standard sixth-round signing bonus of $120,000 - “I’m talking on my new iPhone,” he said of his early splurges - and will report to a Rangers instructional camp in Arizona later this week. He’ll join Texas’ Class-A short-season affiliate in Spokane, Wash., shortly after.
“I was the highest pick in the A-Sun and I’m definitely happy with how it all worked out,” said Bleier, who went 7-1 with a 2.09 ERA as a junior. “Now I just can’t wait to get my career started.”

MLB’s guidance dictated about $123k for 5th rounders last year, and I think they’ve upped bonuses about 10% this year. There’s no official guidance for 6th and beyond, but definitely no more than 5th-round money. Most of last year’s guys got about $110-123k, but some were down around $25-40k. They might’ve been college seniors with no leverage.

Not bonus money
How much do they actually get paid during their season? Is it per game?

Oh.
They get paid jack squat. Lower levels get something like $1,000-$1,200 a month. And a small per diem.

HS draftees
that’s a lot more than I made while in college at that age…not hard to take that kind of money when you consider the possible future.

I don't know
But I thought I had read maybe a story or someones blog where they get a housing allowance but usually room with another player or players so they can use more of that money for other stuff. Sorta like the military

Kiker
Still hitting 95 in the 7th. Is he the next SP to get promoted to Frisco?
by Butters on Jun 9, 2008 10:45 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Has anyone taken Harrison's
spot in the Frisco rotation? Move him on up! BTW, 95 by a lefty is fantastic. I am tired of seeing soft throwing lefties such as Gabbard and others.

That liner over Whittleman with 2 out in the 7th just broke my heart.
I can’t wait to go see Kiker pitch for Frisco.

I must say, your site is so helpful and I just wanted to thank you for all the work you put in. I don’t go a day without checking it.

I mean, we shouldn't have to wait too long right?
I’m thinking within a week or two Main goes to Clinton, Feliz goes to Bakersfield and Kiker goes to Frisco.
Damn, what a trio that is!

I'm not sure that
Kiker is due an imminent promotion.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 9, 2008 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know he hasn't exactly been dominant in Bakersfield.
But it is Bakersfield after all. Looking at the Bakersfield pitching staff one would have to think that Kiker is next in line for a promotion and considering they have two SP’s who should be coming off the DL soon (Jones and Poveda) and several pitchers in Clinton who are most likely on the verge of a promotion (Feliz and Holland) you’d have to think that somebody is going to get promoted to Frisco.
by Butters on Jun 9, 2008 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hurley spent all year in A+ despite putting up some solid numbers.
I think Kiker is on a similar path.
The guy that gets kicked to Frisco would probably be Hyatt.
Clinton

Bakersfield
Kiker-Feliz-Poveda-Phillips-Reed
Frisco

Is how I see the 2nd half minors schedule turning out. Especially since the Rangers didn’t really draft anyone that you expect to be in A or A+ so soon.

I just realized
I forgot to include Fabio Castillo.
I’d guess Castillo in Clinton, Gomez to Bakersfield, Reed to Frisco and Diamond to OKC, if Gomez is alright.
by FirebatM3 on Jun 10, 2008 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Holland is a 21 year old college draftee.
I’d think he’d get the promotion before Gomez.
by Butters on Jun 10, 2008 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Probably
unless they think Gomez is legit and can handle being pushed.
by FirebatM3 on Jun 10, 2008 1:45 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't be against that.
I just hope they’d take the same approach with Kiker.
by Butters on Jun 10, 2008 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Castillo has been back in the pen some lately, so you could still conceivably go with what you had in some form. Frisco’s roto is going to be boring until some of the prospects get promoted.
by Brett Perryman on Jun 10, 2008 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You're right
I was probably a little too hasty with my Kiker to Frisco sentiments. Hyatt and Reed will both probably get promoted before Kiker. I just want to see the dude pitch soooo bad. :)
by Butters on Jun 10, 2008 1:21 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Isnt Hyatt
seen more as a long men/pen guy in the majors? I dont think he has been a full time starter since being drafted until now and even this year he has worked out of the pen i believe.
Also I wouldnt be surprised to see some recent draftees in A ball with all the college pitchers we drafted.
As for gomez he is hurt remember, so I doubt he gets promoted this year if or when he comes back.

2bman ready to move up the ladder?
Renny Osuna in clinton (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Osuna%20%202B&pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=489186) is destroying .355/.424/.502 and you would think he is close to a promotion to bakersfield where Jose Vallejo is the bakersfield regular 2b and has also done very well (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Vallejo%20%202B&pos=&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=473248) .293/.353/.456
we gotta think these guy are close no?
do u see both these guys getting a chance at the next level up?

The Cal League and the Texas League All Star Games are 2 weeks from now. I have a feeling various fielder promotions will come after the 2nd halves get going in late June/early July. Just a hunch.
by shroomer on Jun 10, 2008 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have to think so.
Ragsdale is the frisco second baseman and okc is a mixture of guys like meyer and ryan roberts ever since duran moved off the position. Second base is one of the few positions were we can start promoting our young guys performing well without fear for now. The real question is if they keep producing, where do they play out.
Obviously you only need one, but with andrus and even arias (outside possibility he could end up being something, maybe a utility player) at short, lemon is now more of a second base prospect as well, so with lemon, vallejo, and osuna coming on and kinslers flaky defense, is this another possible position change in the future? Young to third, kinsler to the outfield possibly?
by rchawk12 on Jun 10, 2008 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
frisco
Isn’t the 2B in Frisco Ragsdale or someone (don’t have the rosters handy right now)? Yeah I would think here in the next week or two we will see alot of action with our minor league guys. Off the top of my head I am guessing Borbon, Vallejo, Osuna, and Feliz all get promoted. Then you got the additions of guys like Main, Ramirez, West and others to full season teams most likely. Then the assignments of our draftees. Good times for Ranger fans
