LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season Edition

I waited as long as I could, but it's finally time for everybody's favorite meaningless in-season community exercise: The Lonestarball Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season Edition!!!

These are always interesting, and the discussion the votes generate is often more fun than the voting.

For a frame of reference, here is the top 15 from the final list we came up with over the Winter:

   1. RHP, Eric Hurley
   2. 1b/3b, Chris Davis
   3. SS, Elvis Andrus
   4. LHP, Kasey Kiker
   5. C, Taylor Teagarden
   6. RHP, Michael Main
   7. RHP, Blake Beavan
   8. 2b, German Duran
   9. OF, Engel Beltre
   10. C/DH, Max Ramirez
   11. LHP, Matt Harrison
   12. RHP, Omar Poveda
   13. (TIE) 3b, Johnny Whittleman
   13. (TIE) RHP, Neftali Feliz
   13. (TIE) RHP, Thomas Diamond

Enough has happened so far this season that I think we need a new list, so it's time to get a mid-season snapshot of our system!

Again: This vote is to determine how the LSB community would rank the players currently in the system. I've listed any guy I thought could possibly be considered a threat to be our top prospect.

Since this is the mid-season CPP,  I want to get through these as fast as possible. I'll leave each one up for 24 hours, and then get right into the next one, with no run-offs. If a vote is close, then a vote is close.

So please check in daily if you don't want to miss a vote.

And... well, that's about it.

Polls are open, So please vote in the poll at at the bottom of the fanpost!

Oh, and if you're one of those bug-eyed weirdos who likes to spend his (or her) time perusing past CPP lists, here are some links just for you:

_____________

A couple of notes:

  • I'm still playing around with the new fanpost tools, so things will get better as this goes along. As we get a little deeper I'll try to put in some quick player statistics to help you choose between the players.
  • It appears I can put as many names on the poll as I like now, which will be a welcome change. No more whiny, petulant minor league know-it-alls complaining that they're favorite 16 year-old DSL prospect isn't on the poll yet. Yah, I'm looking at you, Zwyica and Shroom! :)
  • That being said, I'm open to suggestions for players to put on the list next. If you feel there's someone deserving missing from the poll, let me know and he'll be added next time. Don't be shy.

Davis

Combine his sick power numbers, the fact he has gotten better at each level and the fact that he is barely 2 years removed from being drafted and yet already in the bigs and contributing makes him the clear cut #1 in my eyes.

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.
Ken Tremendous: I like that the #1 reason he will help his team is: "energy," and the distant #2 reason is: "ability to hit baseballs."

Really?

I went back and looked, and no one gave you any shit about having him that high.

The only thing I could find was my statement abut how much our system had taken a step forward and how many guys could make a case for being placed above Davis. I wouldn’t call that “shit”. It was more a statement for our system than against Davis. I voted for Andrus above Davis, but had Davis above Andrus when I did my own for-fun personal list later in the winter.

He’s working really hard on his changeup, according to radio reports. If he gets a hold of that pitch, he could be the best pitcher on the farm in short order.

I’m still a bigger fan of Main, but Feliz probably has the better arm of the two.

Davis

I was skeptical of him being able to put it all together when he jumped to Frisco last year, but he’s adjusted and then some and now he’s mashing homers and doubles for the big club (against seasoned ML pitchers no less) at the ripe old age of 22. He is THE man. Hurley’s nice, as is Neftali, but I think Davis has the potential to be a star while Hurley looks to be a solid pitcher, and Neftali…I really want to put him #1, but I just can’t. It’s the eternal battle of the show-me vs. the prospect potential that rages inside my brain every time these rankings go up…

Masset's been good this year.

35 1/3 IP, 27 K, 3.31 ERA. Those numbers are similar to Rupe’s but with a higher K-rate.

Besides, there’s no comparing that top-10 to the current top-10, even with Danks and Volquez at the top.

I went with Feliz

Simply because Davis is beginning to break into the Majors, so he’s not going to be a “prospect” to me much longer – he’s going to be our everyday first basman.

Right now I really think Feliz is our most exciting, most electrifying “prospect” – he’s #1, with Smoak coming in at #2.

by LSJ on Jul 1, 2008 9:43 AM CDT reply actions

prospect

But since we have only seen him play in 3 games he is still a prospect now which is when these rankings are taking place. So you are telling me you aren’t going to vote for Davis at all? I guess that means Hurley, Duran, and Max are out of your ballots as well

I think No. 1 is pretty obvious in the Beasticon.

However, I’m very, VERY interested to see how 2-5 shake out with Andrus, Hurley, Feliz, Smoak, Teagarden, Ramirez, etc.

You know, there’s been a lot of bitching about general managers and the “direction” of the team over the past few years, but when you look at the wealth of talent we have in the minors, it’s hard to fault anyone in the organization.

2-5

Teagarden should not be in the discussion for this level of prospect after his first half this season. In fact i would argue he is probably not in the top 10 right now. Andrus, Hurley, Max, Smoak, Kiker, Feliz, and Beavan are clearly above him in my opinion with Beltre, Harrison, Borbon, Hunter, Ramirez and Main all in that 10-13 range along with TT.

My 2-5 is gonna be Feliz, Max, Smoak, Andrus. With Max getting a slight nod over Smoak simply due to this first half and the fact he is in and performing in the majors right now

whoops

Forgot about Hurley in my top 5. I think he would slide into the 4 hole pushing Smoak and Andrus down a notch. Wow thats crazy to think that Elvis Andrus is not in my top 5 prospects right now.

I do give a bit of a bump to guys who have made it to the bigs and have performed well which is why I have Smoak so low.

Hurley

Its just a personal thing. The gap between 1 and 5 is not that big. They are almost interchangeable. But based on Hurleys last month and a half in OKC and his brief stint in Arlington I give him a bump over those two. I don’t know enough about Smoak yet and the fact he hasn’t taken a pro swing yet drops him a little in my opinion.

Davis

Davis is without a doubt the best performer in the system. He’s put up video game numbers at every level.

I still think that Feliz is the better prospect. He’s been unhittable as a 20 year old in Low A. From what we’ve heard from BP and BA, it sounds like worst case scenario he is a top notch bullpen arm and best case scenaro he is a top of the rotation starter.

To me Davis still has some Billy Ashley possibilities. There’s still a big question for me if he’ll make enough contact to be a star. And the number one prospect should be a star. At least in this system.

I don’t know.

Feliz is great, but it is possible that the 50+ votes he has received are from the high-ceiling/high-risk people, while the 100+ who voted for Davis may go for someone closer to The Show who is a little higher probability of success…

It’d be interesting to see whether Feliz wins the landslide that you think he would – I for one would not have Feliz #2 – just too far away in a too deep system…

Damn have things changed...

I gotta go Davis at #1, but damn do I love me some Neftali.

I think the top of my board goes Davis, Feliz, Smoak, Hurley, Ramirez, Andrus.

Neftali is easily the most improved and Hurley slid with his AAA performance but has looked good so far with the big club. I think he goes down just because Davis and Feliz have been so great and the Rangers somehow stole Smoak in the draft.
