OT - Brett Myers Demoted To AAA

Since the Phightin' Phils were just in town and there was some good vitriol directed at Brett Myers here on LSB, I thought it would be relevant to share this:

If you've had a bad day, then maybe you'll feel better by reading about Brett Myers. According to MLB.com, the Phillies optioned the struggling righthander to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Because he has five-plus years in the majors, Myers had the option to reject the demotion. But he accepted it and hopes to get back on track after starting the season 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA.

I didn't realize that he was leading the majors with 24 HR allowed.

I was at the game on Friday night and I was shocked to see how off he was from the Brett Myers we've seen in the past. I remember he used to have filthy stuff on his fastball, a powerful slider and a nasty little curve to round out the arsenal. During his time pitching last Friday, I don't think he ever broke 92 on the Ballpark's radar gun. He worked most of the time in the 87-90 range.

And he's definitely a disciple of the David Wells school of physical fitness. Dude's getting big.

I wonder how much

this improves the chances of the Phillies trading for a starter. Gillick seems like he’s not going to trade everything he has in his goodies basket for Sabathia or Sheets, but might go for a solid middle guy instead.

If he had rejected the demotion

They would have had to DFA him

He has the right to refuse, and they’d have to keep him on the roster or actually designate him for assignment. Similar situation with Giambi a few years ago where he refused to go to AAA and forced the Yankees hand.

Joe Morgan: (On Jay Bruce) I think he will. He brings energy to the team, and besides that, he is a pretty good hitter.

I'd have put in a claim on Myers in about half a second

I know he’s sucking, and I know he’s a wife beating POS, but he’s a young pitcher with top shelf talent.

If they put him on the trade market, would anyone here bite? Could be a nice buy low kind of guy.

Hey, I'm a complicated man, baby.

If they wanted to ban him for life for cold cocking the missus, I’d be fine with that. Wife beating is despicable. But if they’re gonna let him play in the league after slugging his wife, it may as well be for us, right? Or not. Flying Spaghetti Monster help me… I just want an ace so bad!

Oh, and I got the first disc of Mad Men in the mail today and threw down on the first two episodes. I’m liking it. It’s got some potential. I’ll let you know what I think when I’m done with the first season, cause I know you can’t decide if you like something or not until you hear from me. What’s it like being on the Dirkatron bandwagon, Sauce?
