I suppose.

I guess seeing him pitch in Frisco on the 4th just got me over hyped.

i was thinking the same thing.

but, that play proves a couple of things. PH’ng Bradley for an OFer causes all kinds of problems.

and, we really need byrd to split CF with Hamilton

connor hate

kind of misplaced. rangers usually get out of jams once he goes and talks to pitchers. kind of a weird myth that gets perpetuated here. given that a pitcher he requires a mound visit is usually sucking, connor has a pretty good track record. go look at gamedays.

i doubt mound visits help anybody

but he’s not more prone to having bad things happen after a mound visit. no evidence backs that up at all. i feel like people here have the absolute worst memory. We have Connor hate right after he comes in, AND NO RUNS SCORE

Why isn't it Kinsler's fault for not getting the bunt down?

There was nothing wrong with the strategy. Probably half he managers in MLB would have done the same thing. There also would have been nothing wrong with letting him swing away. It’s just a decision that was made and the player didn’t execute.

by robert_d_wilfong on Jul 10, 2008 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

kinsler has not been a particularly good bunter

hes popped up several this year and hit others right back to the pitcher.
all the more reason not to have him bunt.

I disagree

I’m not a big fan of Wash’s in-game decision-making, but I just don’t think the bunt in that situation was as ridiculous you.

However, his handling of Feldman was truly ridiculous.

What where you gonna do? The bullpen was shot, and Luis Mendoza is starting tomorrow… he didn’t have much choice other than to try and ride Feldman as far as he could.

michael young and ramon vazquez are not warning track flyball hitters. they are singles hitters.

the man is on SECOND BASE. he is already in scoring position. you bunt him to third with the pitcher. you bunt him to third with a sucky hitter. you do not bunt him to third with your best hitter.

that decision absolutely deserves to be bashed, and to say otherwise stuns me.

make a lot of deep flyouts.

they are linedrive and groundball pitchers, not a lot of deep fly ball outs. of course some, but when its such a highly debatable decision you better at least have someone who hits a lot of flyballs coming up.

vazquez isnt that guy. and if he walks, neither is young.

both are more likely to hit singles. 3 shots at a single from .300 hitters >>>> one shot at a deep flyout/hit and another at a hit.

Worst base running ever in the 11th.

Never, ever, ever let Boggs or Max Ramirez run bases again. They single handedly lost the game for us in the 11 inning alone. Look at the replay and allow the whole team to look at them and teach them why it is important to run good bases. That is all I ask. Max Ramirez didn’t even run after the bunt until the ball passed 2nd. Boggs waited to tag or go back to first on the pop up, then assumed the pitcher was going to make a good throw. Therefore, he started walking or a slow jog to second. If he would have just ran to second like he should have, assume the pitcher will not make a good throw or try to prevent the double play he would have made it to 3rd. I couldn’t even watch the rest of the game. Teach good, very basic techniques and we still could have won the game.

by justong on Jul 10, 2008 11:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

What was the problem with Boggs?

He has to stay at 1st because 999999 out of 1000000 times that ball gets caught. He broke for 2nd as soon as that ball hit the ground, which is all he could do.

Max though can’t just stand there in the batters box

Boggs jogged maybe walked to 2nd. Watch it again. He assumed K-Rod was going to make a good throw. There is no reason for him not to be on third.

Nope! We will really never no. Watch as he jogged to second after K-Rod missed the pop up. We may never know for sure. I would have like to see him run hard. That is all.

by justong on Jul 10, 2008 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's ridiculous.

I watched that first popup bunt closely, and Boggs had no option but to stick close. Yes Max should have been in passing gear to force whatever could be forced.

by Ed Coffin on Jul 10, 2008 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think his assertion is that once the ball dropped

Boggs didn’t run hard for second. He kind of walked toward second, thinking it was going to be a good throw so why waste the effort. I didn’t notice that, but if true it is frustrating, even if understandable. Still don’t know that even if he’d sprinted as soon as the ball hit the ground that he could’ve made it to third on that play. You never, ever want to make the first out of an inning at third.

If Kinsler hits into a double play

how many of the same people who are questioning the bunt would be questioning letting him swing away. Hindsight generally comes straight out of one’s posterior.

Wash has made many in-game mistakes which triggers a dogpile every time something backfires. IMHO, the bunt was far from outlandish.

i was quite supportive of wash for the great majority of the season

i defended his bullpen management and that he had properly adjusted the lineup with young hitting 2nd instead of 3rd and such. and gave him credit for asking for bradley.

i have started to turn on him, but its not because of a bias. i felt very bad for the guy when it looked like he would be fired. its because i think he has made some horrible decisions the past 3 weeks. tonight being the worst, if you put the bunt decision on him (no idea if he had any part in that from the locker room).

people didnt say feldman should have been pulled only after he walked in one and hit another, they said it when the bases were loaded and he had nothing. noone could complain about a bunt before it happened, but i think its pretty established that very few people here are fans of bunting with KINSLER.

i dont think bashing of either decision was turning on him after a bad result, but just disapproval of the decision.

now that doesnt mean just because some fans on here think one way it means anything, but i dont think the moves were meant with disapproval because of who made them.

Granted

That is a possibilty. Please take into account each hitter’s GB-LD-FB tendencies, and if you are really fast with analysis, those three versus Francisco Rodriguez. Ian is unlikely to put a ball on the ground, and has a historically low GIDP rate. Your point is good, but I think Ian was the best shot to produce a run before the side was retired. And really, it isn’t hindsight when a collective howl of disbelief goes up from Tarrant County in the bottom of the 11th … you can believe that something is wrong.

This is why I'm a fan

It’s one of the few topics that can be debated with a great deal of passion yet without coming to virtual (or literal) blows.

Your point regarding Ian hitting into a double play is certainly good and valid. I was really using it as a hypothetical. My point is as much about how people react to seemingly every decision Wash makes as much as the actual decision in question. I still don’t think it was as hair-brained as some on here would like to believe. However, it’s obviously not fair to praise the team when they win and blame every loss on Wash—even to the point of declaring the team overcame management to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
