Bob Sturm on board with Kinsler at 2B

Bob Sturm crunches the numbers on Ian Kinsler vs. Alfonso Soriano at second base, and has come around to the view that Kinsler's range -- unlike Soriano's -- is good enough to make him worth keeping at second base, despite the big error totals...

I love the Ticket

But I’m still somewhat perturbed that I had to link the BP article to both Craig and Bob for them to bring up Kinsler’s range. I guess dwelling here with other hardcore baseball maniacs has made me take fanaticism for granted.

well, i think being around here has a lot to do with it. i doubt the average fan or even sports talk host knows much about range and zone factor ratings unless they maybe do nothing but baseball.

i’ll give it to bob, after doing some reading he came up with some good analysis and admitted he was wrong

Junior

I had to do the same thing with craig last week. but he still didn’t get it. He kept comparing kinsler to Roy Williams. Saying that if Roy has the most tackles on the cowboys but also has the most missed tackles he is still the worst safety in the league. I thought it was a stupid comparison and I expected more from “The Professor” of ranger baseball.

I'll admit, that's something that frustrates me a lot.

It seems like people who talk about sports as a profession should be well versed in all angles of baseball research.

Talking about and studying sports isn’t my job, and baseball’s not even my first (or maybe even second) love and I’ve got a BP subscription.

I used to listen to bob and the other dufus

and bobs partner knows as much about anything as my 6 year old Blue Heeler dog. I admit I think he is funny but there are a lot of comedians out there.

confirms

what most of us here suspected. I had no idea that Kinsler was that much of a range monster. I still think a good bit of his popularity here is due to his being homegrown and the way he skyrocketed to prominence as a prospect with Jamey’s reports in 2004. But he’s earned it since then with not only good play, but a solid workmanlike attitude that fans love.

Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted.

othere defensive stats have him at average or below range wise

just for the record.

regardless of unreliable defensive stats, anyone who watches the rangers knows kinsler has good range. its just obvious.

the preceding post is not nearly as negative or insulting as you think it is

I suspect

...my examination of Kinsler’s RZR totals wouldn’t be too popular in Sports Sturm’s eyes, then.

The discrepancy between Kinsler’s RZR and range factor is interesting, but then I’m far more inclined to believe what a superior defensive metric like RZR (which is, in essence, a refined version of zone rating) says than what range factor says. Not to say that Bill James’ work in the area of fielding wasn’t revolutionary for its time, but there are better evaluators out there today.

Speaking of which, I really need to begin studying Pinto’s PMR…
