LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season #9

After squeaking out a tough 4 vote victory over controversial mystery man Taylor Teagarden, Blake Beavan has won the right to be called the LSB Community #8 prospect!

The list so far:
1. 1b, Chris Davis
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. RHP, Eric Hurley
4. SS, Elvis Andrus
5. C, Maximiliano Ramirez
6. 1b, Justin Smoak
7. RHP, Michael Main
8. RHP, Blake "C-Wun" Beavan

Time to move on to the next vote.

The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.

And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.

NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

Yah, sorry about that

The one gripe I have with doing this thing in 2.0 is that you have to retype the poll each time. I double checked to make sure I didn’t miss anyone, but still missed someone. I suck. Apologies.

Several people voted

by t ball on Jul 12, 2008 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess it might

Did anyone who wanted to vote for Teagarden vote for someone else during the 2 minutes he wasn’t there?

I’d really like to avoid having to delete the post and throw up another.

That’d be annoying for everyone, imo.

i doubt it

the people who were looking for him are probably the ones who asked where he was

Yah I was still around

If anyone who voted right off the bat wanted to vote for Teagarden but didn’t cause he was on the list, speak and I’ll adjust my calculations at the end.

Kiker again for me

Same reasons.

I think sometimes we overlook the fact that minor league players (and pitcher in particular) often put their pursuit of domination on hold to “work on things”. Kiker has significantly lowered his BB% and is getting a ton more GBO’s this year as compare to last, and he’s holding his own in a very tough pitchers’ league at a pretty young age.

Wish the K’s were higher, but the .354 babip should correct itself.

He’s very good.

Kiker is a guy who pitches inside in the Cal league. He’s gonna get burned by the parks sometimes, but he’s a guy with advanced secondary stuff and a fastball that maintains high velocity late into his outings. He should be #7.

Isnt it refreshing?

That we seemingly have so many guys that are deserving of top 10 status but the system is so deep..

My next 6:

TT
Kiker
Beltre
Borbon
Harrison
Hunter

It is very hard to have the 2H club that low….dang

by booyahcaveman on Jul 12, 2008 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd probably drop Borbon below Harrison / Hunter

If Borbon can’t walk or hit for power, he’s going to end up being a really good #9 hitter and rang-y center fielder. It’s hard to get really excited about that.

As for Harrison and Hunter, spring training is going to be really interesting next year. Harrison, Hunter, Hurley, Mendoza, Gabbard, and Feldman will be battling for rotation spots. (I’m assuming that McCarthy will either be guaranteed a spot or will be hurt.)

The name that isn’t getting much discussion is Duran. If Duran was at AAA putting up numbers like he did at AA (.300 / .352 / .525), he’d probably be a top 15 prospect.

Yah, which I think plays a big part in his Borbon hatred

It’s kind of like when you get a chick who’s kind of cute, but who used to be really really hot a while back, and you can never really appreciate her cuteness now cause you’re always obsessed with how hot she used to be back in the day and you feel like you got cheated for not getting with her back then.

“If only the Rangers had gotten him straight out of Latin America when he was 16,” says Z, a solitary tear rolling slowly down his cheek as he thinks of a great love that might have been.

That is so dead on it’s not even funny.

Here’s another way to look at it. You kind of fall for a girl who is really, really cool, but who just isn’t very hot at all. Then you find out that she’s really slutty. You wind up with a less than hot chick who isn’t even particularly pristine.

scenario key:
slutty girl = latino propensity for free swinging

Now 3 votes

and I have to say, having voted for kiker the past two votes (and everytime until he gets voted in) TT is probably the better prospect. He is almost major league ready, plays incredible defense and is not a total liability with the bat, whereas kiker is a lefthanded single A pitcher. They both have solid pedigrees, high ceilings and question marks, however I am coming around to the notion that the severe difference in their timetables would give TT the slight edge.

They are both terrific prospects and this might seem contradictory, but they are both legit and they are both rangers prospects so I will defend them both. As much as I like and prefer kiker, many of us around here severely underestimate TT.

I'm sorry my parents never had me sarcamsized.
