Trade Talk
Sunday trade talk from Larry Stone of the Seattle Times.
Right-handed pitcher Homer Bailey, once the shining light of the organization, has been a bust and could be used to get the young catcher the Reds seek.
Pure speculation on Stone's part, but, as we know, the Rangers do have a lot of young catchers. Would they be willing to take on a reclamation project, kind of like the Reds did with one Edinson Volquez?

the Rangers should be all over that
or at least, I would be, if I were the Rangers.

I'd do it
since the Rangers do have a good amount of young catchers and Teagarden’s long term health being a question, I’d make the swap for a young reclamation project..

Hell no.
Give them Salty. Keep Teagarden.
Ian Kinsler has finally earned the right to be the third of my co-favorite players.

Honestly...
All bias aside, with the way he’s stunk this year I’m not certain Salty’s trade value would be enough to get Bailey straight up. They might do a deal involving him, but I bet they’d want an arm included in the return package – and that’s just not trading Salty at his full potential value.

Its funny
how they rave about how tough Max is because he gets himself run over blocking the plate, and yet nobody says a word about Saltys’ toughness. I read a post on the DMN blog about Salty losing his grandfather a few weeks ago to cancer and his other grandfather undergoing serious cancer surgery last week. At the same time playing with a groin injury which was obvious at Saturdays game. I have had that injury and it hurts to do just about anything. Running is definately beyond difficult. It effects throwing, swinging, and mobility. Pretty much everything. Yet he still worked and got the pitchers through their innings and victory. After reading that post I got to thinking about how he wasnt content to just settle for singles (which is hard enough)but somehow stretched both his hits to doubles, putting himself in scoring position. At the time I could see the pain on his face and the visable limp and was wondering why. Now I know and give him props. I’m sure the staff and his teamates new what was going on with him and when you talk about leadership, ability and toughness, his effort spoke volumes.
OK, carry on with your bashing and rants about getting rid of the kid because he sucks and is stinking up the joint and blah, blah, blah. I for one will be following him much more closely now and giving credit where it is due.

I would hesitate to accept
Bailey for Salty straight up.

Laird
I actually think he has a lot of trade value. And if the Rangers are serious about giving their younger guys a shot, why not move Laird and let Satly and Max take turns behind the plate, to see which one could stick? I’ve seen flashes from both of them, including Max’s iron jaw, absorbing that collision at the plate.

Trade
teagarden + Cat for Homer Bailey Low Level (A or A) outfielder or RP
by ACtheStud1980 on Jul 13, 2008 11:26 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Good question
Why would anyone want Cat, really?
by sggut95 on Jul 13, 2008 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
He has value for a contender who needs a quality bat off the bench, or a platoon 1B or LF.
The Mets, for example, would seem to be a good fit.
Cincy isn’t a contender, though.

Cat
Just trying to get rid of the CAT so we can bring up another rookie to see what their future could be with the team…example Nelson Cruz maybe or Drew Meyer

Appreciate what Frank has given up but he is in the way now and can’t wait to see what comes up next from the farm…when does Mr Hunter get his call up?

Drew Meyer?
Realistically, the best scenario would probably be for Cat to be dealt when Blalock is ready to be activated, and Blalock takes his place.

Agree, sort of...
I know the Mets are looking for a bat, but I think they’d prefer someone with a little more punch, like X. Nady. Wouldn’t completely rule it out, but they wouldn’t give up much for Cat, I don’t think. They might actually be more interested in Nelson Cruz.

i'd figure they would want Erstad over Cat
who Houston is purportedly shopping.
Erstad seems like a more versatile player defensively.

Love it...
Makes sense as it clears up our catching situation a bit and we get a SP who has a lot of potential.

This of course assumes we could make the adjustments that Bailey needs...
the same ones we apparently couldn’t make with Volquez or Danks.

ON the other hand
The Reds might have made adjustments on Volquez but couldn’t on Bailey. Danks he just needed time IMO.

JD
There really isn’t much Ranger talk over at MLBTR. JD certainly keeps things quiet.

Yeah and that surprises me
cause we have so many trading chips…I hope JD is feeling the market.

I get the same feeling as last year
That JD is in listen and compose mode. And there may be a trade involving players other than the presumed list, with what we think of as surplus being space fillers to add piece parts to a more significant deal. My guess (and that’s what it is, an idle guess) is that GM’s on contending teams will take short term fixes for their “what it” problems, but only if something more substantial is involved.

Also
his hands are really tied right now because of the injuries to Padilla, Blalock and Laird. At least two of those three are potentially the most attractive chips that he has.

I think the Rangers will be quieter than last year
on the market. There’s not much of a market for some of the chips they have, and for others they’re going to have to take what they can get.
