Dave Cameron's top 50 trade value

Dave Cameron has several items up on Fangraphs, doing a list of the 50 players with the most trade value in baseball right now.

The top five goes Longoria, H. Ramirez, Sizemore, Wright, and Pujols, and Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler both make the list.

Interestingly, Hamilton ranks quite a few notches above Edinson Volquez, who also makes the list.

Anyway, some interesting stuff, worth checking out, I think...

wait

so, if the Rockies call up the Giants and offer Tulowitzki (#10) for Lincecum (#9), the Giants would think long and hard about it before declining?

I have to think the Giants would probably not even pick up if Colorado called.

There is something about that list that seems funny to me

I know that USS Mariner has done this before (I think Dave Cameron then as well), and something is just odd about the way he ranks the players. I think it is the way he discounts players due to the value of their contracts and age. I don’t think Pujols contract dampens his trade value at all, 25 teams in baseball would be giddy to pay Pujols that money right now.

I think the other problem with Dave’s lists are that he doesn’t discount youth at all. The flip side to all that potential is risk, sure Longoria looks like he could be a hall of famer today, but what are the odds Longoria actually has a Chipper Jones type career? He cites a comp as Scott Rolen. Sorry, Evan, but if Scott Rolen is all you are giving me, then give me Wright and his oft-cited Mike Schmidt comp any day.

The contract

I think Pujols’ contract is a major factor. Not because he isn’t great, but because paying close to market value for a great player isn’t nearly as appealing as paying a great player 20% of market value.

Let’s put it this way…if Longoria is 90% of the player Pujols is, he is much more attractive as a trade target than Pujols because he is so cheap, he allows you to spend money in other areas.

Hanley

should be #1.

At First Glance...

I would say Scott Olsen. He only has a 5-4 record despite a 109 OPS+, has seen the most unearned runs of all of the Florida starters, and Ramirez has the most errors on the team. However, Ramirez has never made an error which resulted in an Olsen loss or no-decision.

5-4 record and 109 ERA+

I don’t know if there is an exact formula for predicted W-L from ERA+, but it seems to me that a pitcher who is about 10% better than league average should have a winning percentage about 10% better than average (average being .500). This would estimate him at around .550, which is almost exactly what 5-4 is.

19 Starts

Olsen has 19 starts, and I guess that is why I figured the bad defense of Ramirez played into all those no-decisions.

If his bat

is the best in baseball, I agree. But if someone is weighing in his position, I think it matters that he isn’t good. Personally, I don’t think that he’s the best hitter in baseball.

agreed wtf how is he not #1

that is insane…

longoria

i knew he was very very highly touted but damn, i didnt think he would be top 5

Longoria vs Davis

Im curious what it is that makes Longoria so much more highly touted than Chris Davis. Frankly looking at their stats I see no reason why other than Longoria takes more walks. Davis has put up consistent OPS of around .980 while Longoria, outside of A ball, hasn’t had an OPS above .930. If Davis had been brought up in April like Longoria was who would we be talking about for rookie of the year? I think it would be Davis in a rout.

davis

im guessing longoria is considered a lot more highly defensively

also, im thinking a lot of people think davis will hit for power but not necessarily will be a good hitter while people think longoria will do both.

yep

Longoria is considered to be a GG caliber third baseman.
