LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season #10
On behalf of thedirkatron, who was called out of town unexpectedly and asked for someone to move on, I'm posting the next round. After another squeaker Taylor Teagarden has won the right to be called the LSB Community #9 prospect!
The list so far:
1. 1b, Chris Davis
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. RHP, Eric Hurley
4. SS, Elvis Andrus
5. C, Maximiliano Ramirez
6. 1b, Justin Smoak
7. RHP, Michael Main
8. RHP, Blake "C-Wun" Beavan9. C, Taylor Teagarden

Time to move on to the next vote.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

Tough choice
but I went with Beltre here by a nose over Kiker. He’s picked up lately and he’s going to start justifying the hype.

I'm going that route too.
Hard to go against Kiker and I didn’t wanna knee jerk and go Hunter…..It’s just, Beltre’s potential is way to great to overlook and oh yeah, he’s eighteen. What a list though…. Beltre/Kiker/Harrison/Hunter/Borbon, four of them won’t make the top ten!

You should add Holland to that list
A lefty with a mid-90’s fastball, above average change-up, developing breaking ball, and 1+ year of performance (>9K/9IP, 3 walks/9IP, WHIP~1.1, and ERA

Continued thought on Holland
ERA less than 3.00)! The fact that he’s not in the conversation of top-ten prospects speaks to the outstanding depth of the Ranger’s farm system. Holland’s probably the Ranger minor-leaguer with the greatest chance of going the way of Neftali/CD/MaxRam and enjoying a meteoric rise up the national prospect lists.

for the 4th straight time.
Warner Madrigal is the Rangers most underrated prospect by a longshot; he SHOULD be be closing games within 3 years IMO. Matt Harrison is underrated too.

After Harrison’s start on Sunday, there sure is alot of room on his bandwagon. Also, why is Arias still considered a prospect? He is going to miss the AAA all-star game due to his shoulder bothering him. Again!

Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.
Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.

Everyone is Overlooking
German Duran. The guy can play and is getting terrific experience at the major league level. I would prefer if he had spent the first half of this year at AAA, where I think he would have continued to post terrific minor league numbers. He is going to force the Rangers to find him at bats next year and i could see him forcing Kinsler to the outfield before anyone else.
by capcity ranger on Jul 15, 2008 10:14 AM CDT 0 recs
"terrific experience at the major league level"
I disagree. I think he should be in AAA playing everyday, because he spends at least 70% of his time on the bench these days. I attribute that to his offense being so weak so far.

You don’t have to be a dick when plenty of others disagree with you either.
I just can’t see how he gets mentioned in the top 10 with the way alot of our prospects are performing.
If Teagarden was so highly thought of I think he would have more than 3 votes right hereDo ... you ... feel ... like ... a dumbass?

He had a good futures game.
Your point being? I still don’t think he is one of our top ten prospects. Again its really not anything against him I just feel we have at least ten other prospects better than him. Im glad you feel so highly about the guy you have to come back and post all this. I guess I will wait until he has one bad game and ask how you feel about him then.

I agree with that. Our farm system is really loaded right now, and myself, I consider it a positive, not a negative that Teagarden is no longer really one of our top-10 prospects, nor our top catching prospect.
People around here though seem to have a real affinity for Tea though, probably because they’ve watched him since he was drafted and he’s the one they want to see succeed.

The taste for Tea
It also has to do with the fact that he is a very, very good defensive player at a very important defensive position.
Defensive value at a premium defensive position is becoming anachronistic in this offensive-minded age.

FWIW - Jared Hyatt impressions
I went thru and watched Jared Hyatt pitch on the free video at MiLB.com – link at the magic calendar. He’s built a lot like BMac. He’s a little shorter and appears to have a little better wiry strength and coordination. He has no hips so he’s constantly tugging at his belt buckle to secure his pants.
He has a pretty simple delivery – stand tall and straight and throw over the top – tries to get a downhill effect to his pitches. His FB isn’t blazing fast – never heard a gun reading – guessing around 90 mph. He tries to keep it down but didn’t seem to get punished that badly when it got up.
His change-up is a lot like BMac’s – starts out looking like a low FB then dies down onto the plate. The low FB/CU combo works well together. I don’t remember ever seeing his CU drift up or get hit hard. He repeated it well.
His CB is more like Tommy Hunter’s – not a big loopy slow curve but a tight hard biting one that is always around the plate. His height and delivery seemed to add to the downhill movement when it reached the plate – it was a pop-up getter. He didn’t really get wild with the CB until he tired in the 7th before getting yanked. Not many CB’s in the dirt, if any.
For a thin guy he hides the ball well – seemed like uses his glove to hide the ball. He’s got some deception in there. His mound presence was calm and purposeful, not showy or macho but business-like. Better than BMac’s IMO. He didn’t seem intimidated at all. He got tons of pop-ups and weak fly-balls. Mayberry made a fine running catch in the RF corner to save a double once. Good wheels and moxie running toward the wall by JMJ there. Looking back at his 2008 stats I’m surprised by his decent K-rate because his arsenal appears to me to be built for contact.
He’s not junk – sound head, simple repeatable game plan and a decent athlete. Yay us.
The Redhawks’ announcer said Teagarden’s throw-out rate was 35% not 40% like I’d heard the week before. 35, 40, still good.
The did a quick feature during the game of all the former OK Redhawks who are playing in tonight’s All Star Game. Plenty of names. Mostly on other teams. gak
by shroomer on Jul 15, 2008 4:32 PM CDT 0 recs
Do catchers
throwout rates go up as they move up through systems? I imagine that the minors have as many 1 tool fast guys as the bigs (i.e., Fast Freddy Guzman), so the quality of opponents won’t get higher as you go up, but I’d guess that the pitchers are not as good at holding them on.
Thoughts?

Ditto
Basically, I was pondering the same thing while hearing about Tea’s CS rate – every level has fast guys – but hopefully pitchers in the bigs are more help – of course, thieves are more savvy, too.
