New Blog: UW Dawg Pound launches! Bar-right-arrows

bullpen help

I was lurking over at DRaysBay and saw that they, like a number of other SB Nation communities, are intrigued by Nelson Cruz.  They are looking all over for a right handed bat for the OF, and while it is entirely possible they go out and acquire a legit big league bat, they could be a potential landing spot for Cruz.

Now I know the opinion of a collection of sports fans is not indicative of that of the GM, but I threw out the idea of trading Nelson Cruz for right handed reliever Juan Salas and they seemed okay with it.  Salas is already 29 and did not start pitching until 4 or 5 years ago, when it was clear he would never make it as a 3B.  He has a tremendous fastball that BA ranked as the best in the system two years ago, and he has enjoyed some success at the big league level.  He is currently pitching down in Durham and is not on their 40 because he was placed on their restricted list during spring training because of visa problems.  He was also suspended last season for 50 games, so he’s got a little baggage (but then, that’s why we could possibly get him for Cruz).  As recently as last season he was pitching in key late inning situations for the Rays.

Adding him and Calero to the mix could turn a weakness into...something slightly less than a weakness for the second half.

If its one for one

I would at least kick the tires on that trade. If that’s as good as we’ll get for Nelson cruz, that’s still pretty good.

yeah

i liked cruz’s potential when we first acquired him and i think he could still contribute on a major league team but at this point i think he doesnt have much value in our system, barring some kind of unexpected injury.

I agree

I don’t know if we’re going to get anything more for Cruz than a quality reliever.

that would be a coup

quality relievers have great value, especially at this time of the year. I know its not what we thought we were getting when we got him, but any time you can get a legit quality reliever (not saying salas is or isnt) there is value there, just ask wayne krivsky.

Question

Is it possible the Rangers trade Frank Francisco before the deadline, if they get a high-rated starting pitching prospect in return … someone like Nick Adenhart from the Angels, or Jake Arrieta from the Orioles? Just soliciting thoughts on the matter.

I suppose its possible

but improbable at best.

Cruz...

Might be a smart low buy for the Rays if they aren’t able to get a big bat for RF. He would be good option for them.

he'd be better than

Hinske or Gross for sure

Gross..yes

Hinske…no. Hinske has a .873 ops. If Cruz could beat his numbers, id rather just keep him and start him.

Hinske...

I don’t think he continues to hit like he has. Plus he is a very poor defensive RFer.
