Brandon Boggs
I am very intrigued to hear Rangers fans' thoughts on Brandon Boggs. I haven't seen him play much, other than the quick rave on Baseball Tonight for the walk-off homerun last week. I've read a range of scouting reports on him, some saying he could has the athleticism to soon be an everyday centerfielder. Other reports say he is at best a left field anchor that will have to hit to earn a starting job. Other reports say he is destined to be a fourth outfielder.
What are your thoughts on him ... His bat? His strikeouts? His switch hitting balance? Defense?

Boggs...
I’m not sure he will ever hit enough to be an everyday corner outfielder. He has the athletic ability to play all three outfield positions, but I am not sure that he would be more than an average defensive CF(I really haven’t seen him play there much).
Overall I think he would be a below avearge starter but an good 4th OF that could start and do well for a stretch if called upon.

Concur...
That’s a fair assessment of Brandon so far.
Above average D in the COF but below average bat there. Average D and bat in CF. Pretty good arm. Switch hitter, so a good gut to PH and come off the bench and play some OF late in close games. I think he will cut down on his K’s over time. I hope he can hit enough to push for a starting spot, but it’s really to early to tell if he can or not.

I must
have been copulating when Brandon Boggs hit this walk-off HR you speak of.
Warner Madrigal is the Rangers most underrated prospect by a longshot; he SHOULD be be closing games within 3 years IMO. Matt Harrison is underrated too.

boggs
Good 4th outfielder, solid guy to have around. Sort of the upper-middle class man’s Marlon Byrd.

StickRat,
Are you thinking of Hamilton? He hit a dramatic walk off HR last week against K-Rod.
If so, then I would say he grades out well in all of the criteria listed above, and I dare say he’s a keeper.

Probably I am getting confused. I know they were talking about Boggs crushing a homerun, so maybe it was the same game where Hamilton hit a walk-off, and I am getting mixed up. Come to think of it, I was writing a fan post at another site when I was watching that, and wasn’t paying it my full attention.

Perfect 4th OFer
or platoon partner…possibly with Murphy if he cant start hitting lefties.

interesting point
considering that he’s hitting .275 / .339 / .588 / .927 against lefties this year.

against RHP
his OPS against RHP with Oklahoma was .951.
In Frisco last year it was .823 and in Bakersfield last year it was .820.
With Texas this year, it’s .700.
The only American League left fielders with an OPS north of .800 against RHP are Manny, Carlos Quentin, Johnny Damon, Marcus Thames, Jack Cust and Luke Scott.
If Boggs can adjust to what he did in the minors - something like an .820 – .840 OPS vs. RHP - why would be he a platoon guy, especially in light of his well above average defense? And since Boggs has evidently always improved, why would you conclude that he’ll suddenly stop doing so?
I don’t understand why people pigeonhole players like this.

I simply dont think
that Boggs can adjust to majors and bring them up to his minor league numbers. I also think with his switch hitting ability and defensive flexibility he can be a great 4th OFer. Now, if you have Murphy as one of your starting OFers in LF (his OPS is .863 against righties so you forgot him in your example if you consider him a LFer which I usually do) you may be better served by platooning him. Well in Boggs you have a great 4th OFer who can serve as a platoon partner. Also, dont forget that he has 3 HRs in 51 at bats vs. righties as opposed to one in 125 against righties. Overall, his strikeout numbers worry me from both sides of the plate.

I imagine you meant to say Boggs has 3 HRs in 51 at bats vs. lefties … not vs. righties. I can go look it up, but I am fairly sure Boggs has done better against lefties this season.
So far as Murphy goes, that guy is having a great season. Easy to get overshadowed by Hamilton and Bradley at this point. I think with the Rangers, Boggs equates as a fourth outfielder at this point, with potential to earn a platoon job. I am not asking so much where Boggs fits into this particular outfield mix, but where he COULD fit were he not surrounded by like-position all stars.
