Trade Talk, dont knock it till you try it

In an effort to start a little trade discussion and more importantly, centralize this banter into one ongoing thread I offer this: I have started collecting rumors involving trading and our beloved Texas Rangers.  The rumor mill is just starting to get churning and some of the may have been brought up somewhere else, but again as I previously stated this is an effort to keep all this discussion or most of it anyways into one thread.

So here goes:

What I have heard is something we all know, is that nolan may prevent JD from selling some pretty decent trading chips.  We dont have the ammunition as last year, but there is still plenty to shoot around and see what sticks.  I think we all hope JD wins out if there really is any truth to this rumor since he has done at least as of late, an outstanding job rebuilding this club quickly while remarkably still fielding a competitive team.

First the rumors:

So far in the last few hours or so I found just a few tidbits from various places like mlbtraderumors.com which collects all the newspaper stories and reports.  That is probably the best site for those interested in doing their own research since a lot of what is out there is centralized into one easy read.

So now the rumors, Texas seems to be the an early front runner for Dunn next season, especially if bradley is not kept.

A lot of teams need catcher, including boston, florida, and san diego.  No names thrown around on players from either teams except for kevin kouzmanoff of the padres.  He doesnt really excite me, but he is young, has a little pop, and is under team control for a while.  Seems like a laird for kouz deal might work, but like I said, this is a very vanilla kind of deal unless you are sold on kouz being at least above average at third.

Several teams are in the market for a relievers, particularly lefties with some being mentioned boston, both new york teams, and depending on who you believe florida.  Interestingly several of these teams have multiple needs that could be addressed in one deal including boston or florida who is running cody ross out in center until maybin is ready.  They say they are content but salty/laird plus byrd and maybe a reliever might get us a mlb ready pitcher seeing as how they have 5 already in their rotation between andrew miller, ricky nolasco, josh joshson (personal fave), top prospect chris volstad, and scott olsen.

I know this might have been a little lengthy, but its in keeping with the idea of centralizing all this upcoming trade talk into one big thread, so technically its fitting. Talk if you want, but please save the kvetching, I am only trying to help all those tiring of multiple trade threads.

if youre bringing up Dunn in reference to Tim’s response in the live chat yesterday i hardly think that qualifies us as front runners. it was just a quick response trying to come up with a team that might roughly fit for him. personally i dont see us going after him, and id rather see us spend that money on a sheets or sabathia. but if you have another source for the dunn rumor id be glad to see it, i just havent heard anything other than that.

I love Dunn as a player

But he’s got old-man skills that could deteriorate quickly. His strikeouts and lack of smallball acumen will drive Wash absolutely crazy.
If we’d have to give up the first rounder, I’d decline unless he’d come for really cheap-which I can’t see, because he’ll have plenty of suitors.

Smoakin

nope that was it. I was just throwing all the rumors I had heard, not claiming there is any legitimacy to any of them. Of all the rumors listed that is my least favorite, nothing against dunn, but I am in total agreement with you. We have enough 1b/dh candidates and dont need to spend the money on him. It would be much better spent on c.c. or sheets, who looked awesome last night btw.

Wouldn't go that far

But this team signing Dunn makes no sense. Dierkes was trying to come up with a team on the fly and even admitted he couldn’t think of a good fit.

1. He’d want more years and money than MB I think. I don’t see a scenario where they snub MB to sign Dunn.
2. He has no position. He’s a terrible RF (that’s Josh’s eventual spot anyway) and as many have pointed out before, LFers in Arlington need to be rangey. 1b is occupied by CD, so he’d basically be a full-time DH.
3. We have enough lefty mashers. I’d rather save the money and just make Max the DH than sign Dunn.

by LiamP on Jul 16, 2008 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a full time DH

who treats the game like BP, and is only interested in homers. He’s probably gonna get paid a ton. When his bat speed slows, and it probably will in his 30s, he’s not gonna have a lot of facets to his game. A very one dimensional player, and I’d hate to have him stuck to a long term contract.

Talk about rue the day

we will rue the day if we sign Bradley to a LONG term deal, the most I would give Bradley is 2 years 25 million with a club option that kicks in with PA’s for 14 million. This team would be way better right now if we could trade Bradley for Sheets or CC, so I say if it comes down to it the only pieces we add in the offseason should be frontline pitching, then we can go from there!

My point is people want to go after Sheets even though he has an extensive injury history. That fine. I want him to. What I find ironic is the same ones who want it are ones that trash our GM when a guy he traded for who hadn’t been hurt gets hurt all of a sudden and they say he should have known about it and never traded for him.

Money is cheaper

than prospects. I’d sign Sheets in an instant. Look at it like this. Even if you only get Sheets for 120 innings, that is 120 innings of excellent pitching, and, just as importantly, 120 innings you don’t have to run out Mathis, Mendoza, etc. I’d pay for that.

Mendoza

I said over and over that many here were being too quick to completely dismiss Mendoza’s ability to contribute and that he was a potential 5th starter. He has good GB rates, is only 24 and deserves a shot.

I was merely trying to stem the tide of impatient fools ready to get rid of him based on a few bad starts. Most young pitchers start out rough and need time before you know about them. I think he should get more starts before banishment.

tyd3311 is perhaps more hopeful than most here about Mendoza, but he’s right in wanting him to get another shot.

selling or buying

it really doesn’t matter this year much, the Rangers don’t have any chips that are anywhere near as attractive as last year’s trio. This year we’ll see smaller trades, with the team taking whatever they can get for guys like Blalock, Catalanotto, and Cruz, maybe one of Millwood or Padilla. I think they hang onto Guardado, though they should probably trade him if they can.

Marlins

I don’t see Laird going to the Marlins. They want cheap players, and Laird will now be arbitration eligible. He currently makes $1.6 million, which would currently be the fourth highest salary on the team. Arbitration rules dictate that you can receive no more than a 20% pay cut, which won’t happen as Laird is having a decent season. He would instantly become one of the most “expensive” players on the team, some thing they are probably not to interested in.

Pudge from the Tigers and he is making $10million then why wouldnt they want Laird for $2million

by blueballlefty on Jul 16, 2008 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

$13 Million

Yeah, I was a bit surprised to read about this (which came after I posted about Laird). I have a hard time believing the Marlins would pick up the prorated remainder of Pudge’s $13 million contract ($3 million is deferred for this season at 1% interest). I suppose they figure that they stand a pretty good shot at making the playoffs. If you look at their Pythagorean record, they should be 45-50, not 50-45. So, they may want to capitalize on their good luck so far. And while some may say that the Marlins will regress to the mean, this does not always happen (see the ‘07 Dbacks). Their pitching is really not all that great. Only two starters have an ERA+ over 100, with the highest being 111. Since SP cost more than bats, they are going to try and upgrade their offense. Catching is their biggest weakness (68 OPS+), but Pudge is not that much of an upgrade (98 OPS+) when compared to Laird (114 OPS+). I guess the Marlins figure that they can offset the added salary (and therefore a lesser prospect in the trade) by a playoff appearance. Ticket and merchandise sales will increase (maybe even an increase in season tickets for next season), and they can market this team as a WS contender now that Pudge is back (though this would not be true). Does anybody know if they would get more money for the broadcasting rights for their playoff games? I also suppose the Marlins would get better compensation picks for Pudge than for Laird. Perhaps it is the injury concerns that have peaked Florida’s interest in Pudge.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jul 16, 2008 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

compensation picks

Laird is under team control through either 09 or possibly 2010 so they wouldn’t get any picks for him this winter.

comp picks

I don’t think they’d get any compensation picks for Pudge either. You only get picks if you offer arbitration. If you offer Pudge arbitration in his Florida home, he takes it (and you pay 13 mil for next year too). The scenario for compensation picks has some long odds.

Your low self-esteem is just good common sense.

Yeah, compensation draft picks are a gamble. I was kind talking through some possible reasons as to why the Marlins would be interested in Pudge.

The Rangers are in a pivotal position the second half of the season. Their decisions, IMO, look to be very difficult for many reasons.
They have developed a base of a solid team that includes some vets that play a key role (Bradley and Eddie G). Trade or Keep?
They are still the worst pitching team in baseball and due to injuries I doubt many questions have been answered regarding their future pitching staff in the first half of the season. What do you do with Milly and Padilla. I firmly say keep them until we know more about the kids. Unfortunately if all the kids are healthy then Pads and Milly may be taking IP away from some of them.
The line-up is solid, but what to do with Bradley is a BIG question. I have mixed feelings on the enigmatic Bradley. First he is perfroming studly and helps the line-up like few others can. He seams to be happy and welcomed here in Rangerland, that may be a first for him. He would fetch a pretty nice return, but also would look great in the 09 Ranger line-up. The one thing I am CERTAIN about is I do not want the Rangers to repeat the Agonz/Tex mistake with Bradley/Nelly Cruz (who is once again tearing up AAA. Trade one or the other but NOT both!!!
Blalock is another tough question IMO. A career Ranger, having a very nice year before injuries once again took a bite. He is willing to play 1B, would probably also be a nice LH DH, and is not prohibitively expensive for 09. Selling on him now would be selling low. The real question is this a stock that is down and going to rebound, or just go bankrupt?
Cat can go but I doubt he will bring very much in return. I don’t know that keeping him would hurt or help this team both in the long term and short term.
Another question that really needs to be answered in the 2nd half of the season is who plays 3B next year?
The OF is solid and other than Bradley no changes need to be made IMO.

The real question as always for the Rangers is who will pitch. I give the Rangers an incomplete mid term grade due to injuries. If I had to grade them on perfromance, have no doubt I would give them an F. The second half has many, many nice options and we need to make the right decisions (for once) regarding our pitching staff.

Adam Dunn

I will go out on a limb and say this…Adam Dunn could make a good (short term) Texas Ranger.

He is a native Texas who has seen his value drop quite a bit over the last two years, so he will be looking for a hitters park to regain his value, and he will almost certainly have to sign with an AL team because he is really only suited for the DH role. Fine with me. Davis should be manning 1B next year and our C situation should be sorted out by then. He would essentially fill the same role that MB has filled this year.

It is not completely out of the realm of possibility that he would sign a short term deal here, see his numbers balloon like most hitters, and then try to leverage that on the open market later on.

Judging from the complete lack of interest it seems he is drawing this year at the deadline, despite a number of teams looking for a middle of the order bat, I think Dunn could present a bargain for this team next winter. I am starting to wonder if the Reds will even offer him arb.

by clark on Jul 16, 2008 11:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

"Hitters park to regain his value"

Great american ballpark is already a hitters park. What is he going to regain? What you see is what you get with dunn. He’s not going to be a bargain especially with the Red Sox, who could use some power in their outfield as they could non tender Manny, Ortiz is hurt so Dunn could be a part time DH, Dunn would be a killer with the short right field and the green monster. Dunn isn’t going to come here and he’s not going to be cheap.

I threw out Nelson Cruz for Juan Salas on this board yesterday, and while that won’t get most people all hot and bothered, it does represent the sort of incremental gain this team could make in both the short and long term with the right trade.

Here IS MY DREAM!!

I know it’s a dream, BUT let a guy have his fun! Trade Millwood, its not selling low, its just getting rid of a guy that is a real pain in the ass, he totally doesnt buy into the TEAM idealogy, and he is the ULTIMATE beating to watch pitch, at the game on Saturday I swear he was slower than Padilla at his worst! you dont resign Bradley, you either trade him or take your draft picks, now the good part. Take that $12million from Millwood the $12million that Bradley would cost and the leftover from the tremendous underspending this year and go after CC AND SHEETS. This lineup would still be STRONG and the pitching staff would be STACKED. I dont know how close my numbers are but I figured CC would cost about 6 years $125million and Sheets could be had for 4 years $60 million. So how close are my numbers and what do you think of the plans?

Not gonna work man.

Hicks won’t commit to two guys of that caliber because of how much they will cost. I think CC will go for Zito money and Sheets will take 5 years to nail down, and for probably right at $15-17 mil. a year.

Bradley doesn’t need to be traded, and Millwood probably won’t get much interest at this point. If he does, we’re not getting anything very good back if you ask me.

I’d say go for one by getting rid of Millwood if you can, but if not, just free up the money elsewhere and go for Sheets. The guy’s stuff last night was absolutely sick.

So if Nolan wants something like this then it could happen! I also think we will be surprised at what Sheets gets, kinda like we were with Milwood you know he was the ERA leader and then shot his self in the foot by asking for to much and we got him on the cheap. If we could get Sheets for $12-14 million I would go for 5 years and I still believe we would have a chance to get CC ( IF he would come here!)

High price for Nady, Bay, or Holliday

You have to think teams would jump at MB if we was put on the market, as his numbers this year are at or above these other guys. There is no need to get greedy here. No need to ask for Price from the Rays or Buchholz from the Sox. JD showed his ability to identify talent in other farms, and in most cases, it wasn’t the obvious guy having a breakout year that inflated his value, but rather the guy like Andrus or Beltre, struggling at the time, or guys like Murphy or MaxRam, who were blocked in their current system.

MB

can only go to an AL team because he can’t play the field everyday…it limits his trade value. Also some teams might still be concerned about his impact in the clubhouse, given his reputation. I think he’s great for the clubhouse here, but it is what it is. I think the Rays could end up being a great trading partner especially as they begin to struggle here. No of course we won’t get Price but we could still get a solid SP from them for Bradley. They have plenty of SP prospects that would be ranked right after Feliz and Hurley (McGee, Davis, Hellickson). Also perhaps in the offseason if we trade Bradley for one of these SP prospects, we package the prospect with one of our catchers and try to get a high-quality MLB ready SP.

I'm going to just throw this out there...

Bradley absolutely does not need to go anywhere. We need to shell out some money (something in the range of 3 yrs./$30-35 million) and keep the guy here.

My reasoning behind this is not only is the guy a great hitter (as we’ve seen this year), he is probably the key piece in our team’s wonderful chemistry this year. He seems to be the glue that is holding it together as strongly as it has been this year. I can’t see the guy in anything but a Ranger uniform for the next few years.

Injury risk or not, you have guys on the roster who can fill in for him once a week or whatever when he needs a day off, and that’s fine with me. I don’t care what we need to do, but Milton Bradley needs to remain a Texas Ranger.

If JD trades him, I fear for the ramifications that move could have in the clubhouse.

Ian Kinsler has finally earned the right to be the third of my co-favorite players.

Something to think about on BRADLEY!

Bradley has been great this year! But what happens if we fire RonWash, do you think he will play as well for somebody else as he does for Wash. I know Wash almost lost his job earlier this year and I would hate to be in the middle of a 3year $39million contract and Wash gets fired and somebody else comes in here and Bradley turns on them! not saying it would absolutely happen but just something to THINK about!

by blueballlefty on Jul 16, 2008 11:43 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why would we fire Wash?

I can’t see that happening unless we really suck in the second half…I can’t see that happening either.

he's saying over a 4 year deal

or something. wash isnt even signed that long so its at least somewhat reasonable to assume he doesnt outlast a MB contract even if he did well over the next couple seasons. i dont see wash going anywhere anytime soon, but it should be a concern.

The Twins seem to have a fascination with Blalock. A few years back, the rumors had the Rangers asking for Liriano, with the Twins offering Lohse and Romero (or something like that).

i keep seeing everyone in the rest of the baseball world rate teagarden

very high as a great catcher…. yet on this site hes ranked like 9th best rangers prospect.. I would support flipping him for something legit if the red sox offer.some pitching (and/ or salty), if we keep laird for hte next 2 years and let max be a DH and catch every third day that would clean up alot of the log jam at catcher. ram has shown he can call a game and is a badass. trade salty and tg 4 pitching if possible.

Deep system
9 in the Rangers organization would probably be #1-#3 in the Astros organization.

Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.
Junior:It's that simple. Mike Scioscia brings a Glade Plug-In labeled "Winning™" into the clubhouse and everyone who breathes it in gains 15 points in average.

MJH was speculting on the DMN blog

So here’s what I’d ask if I were JD.

Millwood to the Reds for Bailey, plus.

Padilla to the Cardinals for Reyes, plus.

Bradley, Guardado, two of Arias/Duran/JMJ/Cruz to Tampa Bay for Neimann and Hellickson.

Byrd and Cat sent out for sleepers at low A.

Laird to the Red Sox for whichever of the pitchers, Bard, Bowden, or Masterson, JD and company really like. Or talk to Florida like was mentioned above. I don’t care who I just want Laird gone so we can move forward with this catching situation.

I’d also be willing to move, Wright for someone who needs a lefty out of the pen.

by Hull Fan on Jul 16, 2008 5:04 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I like it...

Read on SI.com that the Cardinals were considering moving Colby Rasmus. Any chance of packaging Millwood/Bradley/Guardado/Arias to the Cardinals for Rasmus/Reyes/+ ? Cardinals could use Bradley’s bat protecting Pujols and Millwood in the rotation. This kind of feels like a video game trade but who knows. I would love to get Rasmus but I do get a Laynce Nix kind of vibe…

And I too would like to trade a catcher to help alleviate some of the logjam at the position. Some resolution would be nice.

by BombDiggity on Jul 16, 2008 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Saw that, yeah...

No Nix vibes for me out of Rasmus. Walk rate is too good, for too long.

If they like Bradley, and even some Guardado to get it done, man.

I just don’t let them get off the phone. Buy Rasmus low, whatever the cost…

My thoughts were to get

4-6 pitchers hoping that at least two work out. Between that and the kids coming up a rotation for 2009 can be had and it will improve as the year goes on. It also gets rid of the chaff of Millwood and Padilla and makes it possible to re-sign Bradley if that’s what they want to do because with this going down the stretch the Rangers 1st rounder will be protected.

I like Bradley but wouldn’t be hugely upset if he moved on and Ramirez became our full time DH/backup catcher/backup 1B.

Hmn...

My thoughts on that:

- The Reds would be crazy to swap Homer Bailey for Kevin Millwood straight up, let alone “plus”. Padilla for Bailey might be able to get the job done, but we’d still probably be the ones kicking in the extra player.

- Anthony Reyes sucks. Hard. 5.38 ERA, 1.350 ERA in 220 big league innings – in the NL. Oh, and he’s already 26, gonna be 27 this year. Dustin Nippert >>>> Anthony Reyes, and if we traded Padilla just to get him, I would cap myself.

The rest of that stuff sounds okay though.
