LSB Community Prospect Project: Mid-Season #12
Thedirkatron is back, and our long national nightmare is over.
Thanks to TBall for doing such a kickass job while I was unavailable.
After whipping some serious ass in the last round, Engel Beltre has won the right to be called the LSB Community #11 prospect!
The list so far:
1. 1b, Chris Davis
2. RHP, Neftali Feliz
3. RHP, Eric Hurley
4. SS, Elvis Andrus
5. C, Maximiliano Ramirez
6. 1b, Justin Smoak
7. RHP, Michael Main
8. RHP, Blake "C-Wun" Beavan
9. C, Taylor Teagarden
10. LHP Kasey Kiker
11. OF, Engel Beltre
Time to move on to the next vote.
The polls are open, so go ahead and vote in the poll at the bottom and feel free to make any suggestions and/or criticisms in the comments below.
And please don't hesitate to tell me you want on the list for next time.
NOTE: There has been some speculation as to what the criteria are for this vote. Should guys who are currently in the bigs be involved in "prospect" discussions? For the sake of this exercise we're taking what the guys have done in the big leagues and using the BA prospect formula of 130 AB's or 50 ip. If a guy is under those limits, he's still a prospect right now, so he goes on the list. It's that simple.

He’s got great defensive skills at a premium defensive position, and making it to AA in your first season is nothing to sneeze at, even if you’re coming out of a top college baseball conference.
The dearth of OBP skills still worry me, but with his high contact rate paired with his speed he should be okay in the end.

Mayberry for me.
I don’t know if he fits within this org anymore, but he’s doing very well at AA and should be able to slide in fairly easily.

Great numbers at Low-A, great location with his pitches and velocity is increasing. I’m ready to see what he does at Bakersfield.
Plaschke: Scioscia, the former Dodgers catcher, is the model manager who has created an atmosphere of winning.

but there are also going to be guys further down this list that I wouldnt either based solely on potential. Evan Grant's newsletter today:
Q: Wilmer Font still hasn’t pitched and seems like he has been out longer than anticipated. Something serious going on with that shoulder?
Ryan, N.Y.
GRANT: I am told Font is throwing off a mound in Arizona and there is nothing more serious than shoulder fatigue combined with the Rangers’ extremely cautious approach to the giant (6-4, 237-pound) 18-year-old. I’ve not been given any kind of timetable as to when he might actually appear in games there. That doesn’t necessarily mean, however, he’s hurt more seriously than the Rangers are acknowledging. The club doesn’t like to give out timetables to insure the player doesn’t rush to meet a deadline and to keep concerns about the significance of the injury from mounting if the player doesn’t meet some artificial deadline.

Not trying to hate. It’s hard keeping tabs on teams, especially when injuries screw you and you fall out of it.
Just please try to check in every once in a while even if just to rotate the injured guys out of your lineup. It’s depressing looking at the league rosters and seeing you are starting 4 guys who are on the 15 day DL.

I think I agree
I wouldn’t trade anyone already on that list up there for Jason Castro. Considering that the Astros are crossing their fingers that Castro is Teagarden in 2-3 years, and Tea is #9 on that list, I think its pretty safe to say that Castro would be 11 or 12 in our system.
That’s probably an interesting way to rank our players. If our system didn’t have as many catchers, I may consider a Kiker for Castro deal or a Beltre for Castro deal, but probably pass on each. I’d probably do a Harrison or Borbon for Castro deal though

though I had to think about it for a while, could have gone Harrison or Borbon or Hunter.
I’d like to see Mitch Moreland added soon. I probably like him more than most, but I like the progress he’s made. 35 BBs vs. 38 Ks and nice power.

by t ball on Jul 17, 2008 10:44 AM CDT 0 recs
I was just thinking that Holland may be turning into the next Matt Harrison, having
a low-mid 90s FB and control of quality secondary pitches. What is encouraging about Holland is that his K/9 is better than Harrison’s at this stage of development. I still have Holland below Harrison, since Harrison is pushing into the majors and more refined, but not much below. In the long run, I could see Holland having a better chance at producing an impact season, given he has shown an ability to strikeout folks that Harrison has yet to demonstrate.
Moreland has had a very encouraging season. His scouting report before the draft noted that his best asset was his plus power but that he had an uppercut swing with lots of holes. He has cut his K-rate in half while still ranking 3rd in slugging. That seems like a really fast adjustment, which bodes well for his development. I think a case could be made for him almost anywhere in the 15-30 range, which is a scrum of talent on the Rangers farm.
Does anyone know if Moreland has switched back from RF to 1B since Gac was promoted?
Go Rangers!

Holland/Harrison Comparison
In his first start in High A, Holland’s fastball was 94-96 MPH. If Harrison had that type of pace on his fastball (and the K-rate that Holland has exhibited in his first 1+ years of pro ball), then Harrison would rank alongside Feliz as the Rangers’ top pitching prospect. If Holland produces at AA next year like his track record suggests he will, then he will be among the hottest prospects in the Rangers system.
Moreland has been Clinton’s starting 1st baseman since Gac was promoted.

there isn’t a bad seat really.
we sit behind home plate a lot where the scouts are, which can be cool but really isn’t the best view to see the pitcher and where pitches end up.
if you really want to see feliz from the best angle, i’d go first base side. but bring sunscreen and sunglasses the sun shines right on that side in the evenings

Generation Kill is
greatness. Although, you may not think as highly if you’ve never been or don’t know anyone who was in the military. The storyline seems to have a strong tilt to the interpersonal relationships of a crudely assembled bunch of characters, with the invasion as an anchor.
